chapter twelve

The next day, Theodore woke up with a hangover. He held his hand in pain and pushed the sheets away. He didn't remember coming back home and sleeping. He checked that he was still in the clothes from last night.

Scratching his head, he walked out only to find Ju-Hee in the kitchen cooking something.

Why's she always in the kitchen? He wondered.

"Hey." He approached the woman, coming to a halt next to her. Ju-Hee was startled as she accidentally dropped the spoon and took a step back. Her shoulders relaxed once she noticed it was Theodore who immediately apologised for scaring her.

"About last night.  . " Theodore started, watching Ju-Hee stir the liquid boiling in the pan,"Do you remember what time i came back home?"

"Oh." Ju-Hee nodded, putting the spoon aside before answering,"I waited for you to come back home. I called Du-Sik oppa and then I got to know that you met him in the korean pub. When you didn't come back home , I went there to check if you're okay. And.  . "

"And?" Theodore could sense how stressed she sounded.

"You were still at the pub drinking soju. Du-Sik oppa also arrived there so the two of us brought you home seeing that you weren't in a state to walk." Ju-Hee explained leaving out the part where Du-Sik came back to pay for the soju.

Theodore felt guilty. He hung his head low and whispered a faint sorry.

"It's fine. Don't stress too much. I'm preparing tea for your hangover. You can go and get fresh." Ju-Hee smiled, earning a nod from Theodore.

He felt bad that she had to take care of him now that she's married to him. Ju-Hee poured the tea in a cup and placed it on the dining table , waiting for Theodore to show up. She heard a loud noise as if a glass fell down on the floor. She hurried towards theodore's room but stopped by the door.

"Are you okay?" She asked from outside.

The door unlocked , revealing a shirtless Theodore with a bleeding hand.

She gasped and took a step back. She was traumatized by him being shirtless as well as his bleeding hand.

"I accidentally dropped the glass and when I tried to pick it up, I ended up hurting myself." He explained, seeing the bewildered look on her face. Ju-Hee watched as he walked out with a first aid box and sat on the couch.

"Could you help me?"

Ju-Hee didn't realise she was frozen on her spot until she heard his voice. She felt nervous to go near him. She quietly sat down next to him and held her hand out so that she could place his hand in hers and she would dab the cotton ball.

Her eyes went wide in horror when she noticed the dark mark on his arms. Theodore immediately drew his hand back , cursing under his breath. Ju-Hee felt her throat getting dry and her heart beating faster.

He was a death eater? She was married to a death eater? She sat there in shock until she heard Theodore's voice,"Actually.  ."

Ju-Hee jumped to her feet, her eyes wide as she made some distance between the two of them.

"You're a death eater?" She whispered.

Theodore sighed and shook his head,"Can you first do the bandage?"

"Answer me." She demanded, curling her hand in a fist. She knew she shouldn't be the one acting that way since her father was a death eater as well and he was the reason her mother got killed.

"Ju-Hee." Theodore said sternly,"I am not a death eater."

"You have the dark mark !" Ju-Hee argued , her eyebrows furrowed together.

Theodore released a sigh and grabbed the cotton ball before dabbing it on the cut. He wrapped a bandage around it before turning his gaze towards Ju-Hee who looked horrified.

"You're a cheater." She frowned,"I had no idea about this and you didn't even care to let me know."

"It's not an achievement." Theodore laughed bitterly,"And I need to remind you again that I'm not a death eater! My father forced me to take the dark mark but I never followed 'his' steps."

Ju-Hee still didn't look convinced.

"If you're still worried that I might hurt you, I'll leave." Theodore said with a frustrated sigh and strolled to his room. Ju-Hee stood there, rooted on her spot as Theodore walked out of his room, this time a shirt on his body and left. Ju-Hee didn't know how to feel, how to react. Did she overreact?

Her eyes fell on the cup on the dining table which contained the hangover tea she had prepared for Theodore.

As night dawned upon Ju-Hee, she found herself in the living room, checking Theodore's room . She had returned from work, hoping he would be back but he still wasn't there. She heard the telephone ring and ran inside her room to pick it up.

"Hello?"

"Ju-Hee! I called like a hundred times." It was Du-Sik.

"Oh I was at work." Ju-Hee explained.

"Oh and Theodore? I thought he would pick up if you were at work."

"I think he had something to do. He's still outside."

Ju-Hee wasn't sure if she wanted to tell her brother about the dark mark she saw on Theodore's arm.

"Oh. I called because you said you'll visit tomorrow. You didn't come so I was getting worried."

"Sorry but the owner refused to give me a day off." Ju-Hee lied. She had so much going inside her head that she forgot to visit home.

"Ah.. try tomorrow?"

"Yeah I'll see."

Theodore returned a little late while Ju-Hee was preparing dinner for them. She turned around on hearing the footsteps as Theodore walked in the kitchen and grabbed a glass, filling it with water and chugged it down.

Ju-Hee felt really awkward, standing there while Theodore practically ignored her presence. She felt bad for reacting like that but she was so surprised and startled that she didn't even realise what she had done.

"I'm sorry for today." She spoke up abruptly as Theodore placed the glass in the sink. He stopped and looked at her. Ju-Hee couldn't read the expression on his face. He looked sad.

"It's fine." Theodore shrugged,"I should have told you before."

"No." Ju-Hee shook her head,"I was startled, just so surprised. We're not close so I don't expect you to share such things with me-"

"It's fine Ju-Hee." Theodore locked his eyes with hers,"I won't hurt you so you need not worry. I never wanted this mark on my hand but I had no choice. I was forced. I hope you understand that I'm not a bad person. I won't hurt anyone."

Ju-Hee felt really guilty after hearing his cracked voice and the tears forming in his eyes.

"I know you must be regretting your decision. I'm sorry I pushed you in this contact marriage. It was very selfish of me." He apologized, fighting the tears threatening to fall from his eyes.

Ju-Hee never imagined she would have to face such a situation.

"It's not your fault Theodore." Ju-Hee gulped,"It's a contract between you and me. We both agreed to it so it doesn't makes you selfish. I understand where you're coming from. I'm really sorry for reacting that way."

She couldn't hold back , noticing how miserable and helpless he looked.

"Can I hug you?" She asked hesitantly. Maybe a hug would made him feel better.

Theodore was surprised. He nodded and hesitantly stretched his arms out. Ju-Hee felt warm and cozy, relaxing in his embrace and him feeling the same.
