chapter eleven

Ju-Hee didn't realise when one week had already passed since she married Theodore. The owner congratulated her and even gave her the opportunity to take a leave and go on a honeymoon with her husband but she immediately declined saying that they're both busy. The word honeymoon scared her as if living with him under the same roof wasn't enough.

To escape her father's suspicion, she lied saying they went on a honeymoon to switzerland. She cleaned up the kitchen after the last customer had left and left the pub. As she stepped outside, she found it to be freezing cold. She closed her eyes and apparated to the living room of the apartment.

She expected Theodore to be sat on the couch, reading one of the books she had already read but that day she didn't find him. Maybe he's already asleep, she thought. With that interpretation, she entered her room and laid down on the bed, feeling extremely exhausted. Ju-Hee stared at the telephone her brother had forced her to install in case she needed his help. She couldn't remember the last time she heard his voice so she picked up the phone and dialled the number.

"Hello?"

Ju-Hee frowned. Why did he sound like he was drunk?

"Oppa?"

"Ju-Hee!" Her brother responded with a laugh,"How have you been?"

"Are you drunk?" She rubbed her temples in distraught.

"A little." Du-Sik responded,"I met up with Theodore today. I wanted to know how you've been doing and if he's treating you well."

Ju-Hee sighed,"You could have called me."

"Yeah I know. I needed to hear it from him."

"Is Theodore with you?" She asked further, to confirm whether he has returned or not.

"No. I left one hour before. Why? He didn't come home?"

"No." Ju-Hee replied.

"Well we were drinking together in this muggle korean pub since I got paid by one of the restaurants by helping them to deliver the food. I left after paying for both of us. Maybe he's still there."

"Do you think he'll be okay?" She felt like she was intruding in his personal life but since they live together, she should at least know that he's okay.

"He'll be back soon. Don't worry."

Ju-Hee nodded,"Okay. How have you been? I'm thinking of coming home tomorrow. It's been so long."

"That's great! I'll wait." Du-Sik chuckled,"Did you have dinner? You must be hungry."

"Yeah I was about to go and cook dinner. I'll talk to you later then. Bye."

"Bye."

She hung up the call and changed into some comfy clothes ( a t shirt and pyjama ).

She decided on making fish so she coated the fish in batter and deep fried making it look crispy. She checked the time to find that it was already midnight and Theodore still hadn't returned. Ju-Hee walked inside her room and changed into some warm clothes, including a large coat. She exited the apartment and noticed the landlady taking a round around which she found was very weird since it was already midnight.

As she was about to take the stairs, she heard the landlady's voice,"Are you going somewhere?"

Ju-Hee turned around and forced a chuckle,"Yeah." She didn't know how to explain it to her as the landlady was still waiting for her to answer.

"Actually, I'm in a hurry. I'll talk to you later!" She exclaimed and immediately ran down the stairs and out of the building.

She had visited the Korean pub only once in her lifetime with her family where they celebrated Du-Sik's eighteenth birthday. It was probably the family's last gathering.

As she arrived at the pub, she wasn't surprised to find that people were still there drinking and eating. She entered inside and her eyes roamed around to see if she could spot Theodore somewhere. She wasn't sure if she would find him there but she had no other place to look for other than the pub.

"Ju-Hee?" She heard the familiar voice and looked around to find Theodore seated at one of the tables in the corner.

There were around eight bottles of soju on the table and what made her baffled was that they were all empty.

"What are you doing here?" He couldn't even keep his eyes open as he asked her. Ju-Hee frowned and sat down on the chair next to him, extremely confused about him behaving like that.

"You didn't return so I came looking for you after talking to Du-Sik oppa." She explained.

"Oh." Theodore chuckled, his eyes droopy,"I stayed back. This tastes so good."

That was true. Soju was nice and cheap.

"I think we should leave." Ju-Hee said earning a nod from Theodore. She got up on her feet and helped Theodore to stand up as he could barely see and hold himself.

"Excuse me." One of the waiter came up to them and frowned,"You can't leave without paying."

Ju-Hee frowned. Didn't Du-Sik say he paid before leaving?

She didn't know what to do since she didn't have any muggle money to pay.

"Let's run." Theodore whispered, making Ju-Hee look at him in disbelief. The waiter stared at them as if they had two heads.

Ju-Hee tried to negotiate with the waiter but he just wouldn't listen giving her no choice but to call her brother for help.

"Theodore, stay here. I'll be back." She said sternly, making the man sit on one of the tables.

She stepped out of the pub and ran to the nearest call booth. She dialled Du-Sik's number and waited for him to pick up.

"Hello?" Came the voice from the other end.

"Oppa?"

"Ju-Hee? Is something wrong?"

"Can you come to the korean pub? Theodore is still here and the waiter is asking us to pay. But I don't have muggle money."

"What? I already paid for both of us-"

"I know but please be quick. I'll explain everything."

"Okay, I'm coming."

Ju-Hee released a breath of relief and stepped out of the booth, feeling the cold breeze hitting her cheeks. She walked back to the pub and sighed, watching Theodore sleeping with his head down on the table.

She sat down on the chair next to him , wondering what forced him to drink so much. Her eyes were glued to the entrance door, waiting for her brother to arrive.

"Oppa!" She exclaimed, waving to get Du-Sik 's attention as soon as he stepped inside.

"I'll pay first." He said, approaching the waiter who eyed him up and down before accepting the money.

"What happened?" Du-Sik frowned as he stood next to his sister.

"I don't know." Ju-Hee shrugged,"I think he stayed behind and drank again."

"I shouldn't have left him behind." Du-Sik sighed,"Well, let's get you two home now. Help me." The two of them carried Theodore  , throwing his hands over their shoulders.

"Do you still think marrying him was the right decision?" Du-Sik asked out of a sudden, making Ju-Hee look at him with a frown on her face.

"I had no option."

Du-Sik sighed.

Was marrying an alcoholic better than marrying a madman?

The two stopped in front of their building and looked at each other. Theodore blinked his eyes repeatedly, trying his best to stay awake but the alcohol in his system was making it difficult for him.

"They are very weird." Was the first thing Ju-Hee heard as they reached the floor to their apartment. She found the landlady still standing near the door, talking to another old woman who might be her sister.

"They act very suspicious for a newly wed couple. I've never seen them bid each other goodbye when the girl leaves for work. Something-"

The landlady immediately shut her mouth as she watched Ju-Hee and Du-Sik, carrying Theodore with them. There were exchange of awkward glances.

Ju-Hee shut the door behind herself and the two carried Theodore to his room. The siblings watched as Theodore turned and tossed in bed to find a comfortable position for him to sleep in.

"Thank you." Ju-Hee sighed as she closed the door to Theodore's room and led her brother to the couch. She went in the kitchen and brought a glass of water for Du-Sik who smiled at her. He looked around the house before his gaze landed on Ju-Hee who looked distressed.

"Talk to him tomorrow." He said, keeping the empty glass on the table,"He's not a kid. He should take care of himself."

Ju-Hee simply nodded.
