Chapter 5
Maki wheeled around corners of multiple floors, dodging more nurses and doctors then she could count, until she made her way up to the floor that she was leaning towards.
"I'm sorry, boys, can I help you?" She asked as her posture relaxed and she looked at the face of a dark haired teenage boy.
He remained silent for a moment before the boy next to him spoke up instead. "No... We're- we're just waiting on a word about our friend." He responded with a blank and shocked looking expression.
"Oh, really? I could point you in the right direction possibly, I know you guys had a hard a time looking for Tobio earlier." She happily stated as she patiently waited for them to follow her back to the elevators as they had earlier that morning.
"Hinata." A boy with grey hair and puffy eyes responded . "Hinata Shouyou."
=============
It's been three weeks since the accident, and everyone is far from beginning to worry for Hinata; they're now worried about him being gone.
Suwamura decided to gather up the team and skip out during practice one day to go visit Kageyama in the hospital. They knew that they would be sure to see Hinata there because he always went during practice hours as an excuse not to go... Koshi made sure that everyone on the team understood the condition that both Kageyama and Hinata were in, and wanted them all to even bring something, whether it being a get well soon card for their top setter, or something to cheer up the little orange haired spiker.
But nothing had worked....
"C'mon, Daichi!" Sugawara called from the open doorway of the gym. Winter was beginning to come forth and was becoming quite clear as the weather was changing.
"One second, Suga!" The volleyball captain had called back.
Through the gym, came a rushing Daichi, dressed in a comfy pair of pants and a decent, grey winter jacket, he left his practice shoes on, and his white t-shirt remained unseen to the world as the connected zipper held the jacket that he wore together. He quickly made his way towards Sugawara, not wanting to be late.
He glanced at the co-captain's outfit as well. His attire was simple, as usual. He had a nice pair of jeans that cuffed just below his ankles, almost brisking the concrete that he stood on, a white t-shirt as well, simple tennis shoes, and his Karasuno High volleyball jacket.
"Aren't you gonna be cold?" Daichi asked with a slightly worried tone as he looked at Sugawara's Hazel brown eyes, and his slightly tinted pink cheeks.
"No, I'll be fine, don't worry." He began walking in the direction of the hospital as Daichi followed closely.
The sudden change in weather had frozen any water that slipped into the chilling atmosphere, and iced anything possible that laid in the streets. The leaves crunched with every smooth step that the two volleyball players took, and their feet gave an extra kick upwards at the end of their steps from the smooth and slippery-ness of the ice that they walked upon.
They walked in silence until they finally made it to the hospital.
"Hello there!" A nurse greeted at the front desk as they walked in through the sliding doors.
"Hi, could you help point is in the direction of Kageyama Tobio?" Daichi nicely asked her.
"Of course. Shouyou's actually in there at the moment and I wanted to go check and see how he's doing."
"Shouyou? You mean Hinata Shouyou?" Suga asked.
"Yes! I'm Tobio's main nurse, Amaya Maki."
"Oh, that's right, Hinata's mentioned you before."
"Really?" She asked, puzzled as they begin to walk down the corridor.
"It was only briefly, but yes." Sugawara responded.
They took the elevator and walked up to the room, where an orangette laid sleeping by Kageyama's side, in a cold hospital bed.
"Oh.. He's asleep." Daichi slightly huffed.
"We can wait."
==============
After two hours had past, the ruffling of orange hair was slipping around in the bed, not wanting to wake back up to his reality.
"Hinata?" Koshi shook his shoulder lightly, trying his best to carefully wake up the young first year.
"S-Suga?"
"C'mon, it's time to wake up."
"Whyyyy?" He questioned him with a pout.
"We want to take you somewhere." He smiled in hopes to cheer him up.
"Why?" He asked almost annoyed, as he pulled the thin sheet back over his head.
After some slight convincing, Daichi and Suga had managed to get him out of bed and out of the rooms door.
"Ready to go?" Dadchi asked him.
"Where? I don't want to leave the building."
Sugamama frowned. He was going to make sure that he could get Hinata out of there and cheer him up somehow. "C'mon Hinata, we wanted to take you somewhere as a surprise! We thought it would be fun, and then we can all come right back here afterwards."
"I don't want to leave without Kageyama." He bluntly responded.
"Hinata... You'll come right back- look!" He spotted Maki in the corner, the counter, and pointed in her direction. "Amaya is here and will watch over him the entire time, she won't let anything bad happen to him."
"Hm?" Maki looked over at the three, and casually walked over to them. "Are you going somewhere Shouyou? I can make sure to take good care of Tobio for you." She said as she gave him a very slight smile in hopes that he would leave with them and have a little fun.
"You promise?"
"I promise." She brought her right hand up and made an "X" figure above the center of her chest. "Cross my heart."
He gave Sugawara a weary look, but let out a slight sigh of defeat shortly after, "Okay, I'll go with you."
============
The three boys walked into the town, Hinata still pouting, and sluggishly moving. But the two upperclassmen had a wonderful idea in mind...
"Hey Hinata..." Daichi teased commented, nudging his shoulder with his elbow.
"Hm?"
"Look down the street." He pointed to his right as they turned down a new street, bright lights shining in even the light of the day.
"The- the winter c-carnival??" He took a step back in shock.
"Yep, we wanted to take you out today, and make sure you have some fun." Sugawara added.
"HiNaTa!" A 5' second year came charging for him, knocking him to the ground.
"N-Nishinoya-Senpai?!"
"Noya!" Tanaka smacked him in the back, pulling him up from Hinata on the ground.
"You almost let those guys get to Kiyoko and Yachi!" He shouted as he took off his jacket and waved it at him, quickly putting it back on as the cold air struck his body.
"What are you guys doing here?" He questioned them, awestruck.
"Everyone on the team's here." Ennoshita chimed in, a smile curling along his lips.
"B-but why?"
"We wanted to make sure you were alive." Tsukishima quickly commented, in both a genuine and salty way.
"Tsukki, you could say it a little nicer..." Yamaguchi slightly snickered as he quietly walked up.
"C'mon! We've been waiting all morning for you to show up! Suga and Daichi are the ones holding our tickets and they didn't give them to us yet! They thought we would use them all..." Tanaka pouted.
"Carnival! Carnival! Carnival!" Yuu started to chant.
"Okay, okay! Settle down guys." Suwamura "patted" the air in an attempt to settle them down, before reaching into Koshi's bag and pulling out multiple bags of tickets, tossing everyone one.
"You can-" Sugawara started as he looked back up at the group, realizing that they had already dispersed, "go now."
"C'mon, Hinata, let's go have some fun."
=============
"That was great! Arigatou!" Hinata shouted, happily, as he waved his giant stuffed bear in the air. "Kageyama's gonna love this!"
"I'm sure he will." Sugawara replied as he ruffled Hinata's hair, and continued walking back to the hospital.
They stayed in a peaceful surrounding of silence for awhile. It wasn't awkward, nor was it strange, it was... nice, in a calming kind of way.
"Guys?" Hinata quietly asked, as they walked up to the doors of the hospital building.
"What is it?"
"D- do you think- that-" He paused, not wanting to ask the thought that had been deep in his mind all day. "That- Do you think that Kageyama will- a-actually wak-e up?" He looked up from the bear he had in his arms, and at Suga. "Honest and truly wake up?" He finished as he looked at Daichi.
"I think anything's possible... And besides," Daichi bend down to the ground, so that Hinata would look down at him. "Kagama made a promise right?"
"Mmn hmm." He nodded his head, slightly.
"Can you name one time He broke a promise?"
"N-no." He admitted.
"What makes you think he'd start now?" Sugawara added as he bent down to the same level as Daichi.
"Thanks guys." Hinata happily thanked as he managed to hug the two while still holding the bear.
They got back up and walked inside, moving up the elevator, and to Kageyama's bedroom.
And just like always, the first thing that Hinata did when he entered was look at the heart monitor before stepping inside.
"Do you mind if we stay awhile?" Suga asked him.
"It'd make me happy if you did." Hinata smiled at them.
He looked at Kageyama, and moved towards his bed, smiling happily. "Look Kageyama! I won you a bear! Tsukishima was mocking me 'cuz he said it was ⅔ my size...." He grumpily pouted as he held it out in his arms... almost as if expecting for Kageyama to take it from his grasp.
But he didn't.
He rested it against the corner, almost as if making it look like Kageyama was cuddling with it, and he fixed the sheets that rested atop of Kageyama's body.
'What time is it?' He thought as he looked up at the clock.
11:02
Hinata sat by Kageyama's side, watching the heart monitor as the steady beats pulled up in alignment with the lines on the screen. He found some slight joy in this at times during the day; it gave him some slight comfort.
Beep
Beep
Beep
Daichi let out a soft yawn, trying to cover his mouth. "It's getting la-"
———BEEP————
The monitor's line flattened, and the beeping sound was now replaced with one continuous, loud ringing noise.
Hinata froze. His eyes widening in horror, as he fell to the ground, in shock.
"A-Ama-"
"AMAYA!" Suga shouted over Daichi's sputtering, as he quickly got up and ran out the door, in search for the nurse.
But just as he had only moments ago, Hinata rushed out of the room.
"Hinata!" Daichi called back, trying to run after him.
"Shouyou." Maki called as she followed Suga into the room with a doctor, grabbing the first year by the arm.
"Let go of me Maki!" He shouted back in protest.
"Where do you think you're going? Your friends are right here, and here to help you. Tobio is not leaving us, do you hear me?! Stay here, and with your friends. Tobio is not going to die! So listen to me and let us both keep our promises to you." She finished as she let him go, turning to help the doctor.
Hinata ignored what she had said, and the minute she turned and faced away from him, he rushed back through the doors.
Both Daichi and Sugawara charged after him, as he ran through the doors of the hospital, down the stairs, and out through the glass double doors in the front. Pushing past any and everyone with tears streaming in his eyes.
'Kageyama... You can't keep your promise... I know you can't.'
"Hinata stop!" The third year students called after him in hopes of getting him to turn around, but to no avail.
He continued to run, with Koshi and Suwamura running after him in pursuit, until he reared around a street, and stopped, on the other side of the road. Right at the foot of the sidewalk.
The two older boys rushed up the way he had came, but were forced to stop from the cars crossing in between them. Hinata's face was low, and although he had tear stains skimming his cheeks and eyes, as the light from a high rising street light peared over him, you could see a gleam of hope in his eyes still.
He looked up at the boys and smiled. It was his genuine, happy, Hinata Shouyou, smile.
No more tears streamed down his face, nor did he even let out a single sob.
"Okay, I'm ready to go now." He simply stated as he kept his smile spread along his face, his messy bed head sticking up and appearing very frizzy, and soft.
Daichi and Sugawara were ready to take him back. 'Maybe this is his way of saying that he thinks Kageyama is okay.' Suga thought to himself.
"C'mon, Hinata. Let's go back." Daichi called to him after all of the cars had dispersed.
The road laid silent, and still. The only thing that you could hear was from the single bus driving down from over two streets away, at it continued to its destination.
"Hurry up, Hinata!" Suga began to worry...
His smile didn't fade, it simply turn into a straight face as he still stood there.
Almost like he was waiting for something.
What could he have been waiting for?
"Arigatou." He said as he smiled once again. "Gomenasai, minna. Gomenasai, Kageyama-kun." He looked back at the boys with a single tear in his eye, as it slowly streamed down his face, just barely visible in the nights dim light from above. "I love you. It should have been this way from the start..." He said to no one in particular. "Soredewa Mata"
"Hinata what are you-"
*SCREACH*
The sound of tires skidding across the cool asphalt echoed through the street, as a frail body was thrown about, and smashed into the wall of a building across from them, and to the left.
Hinata's body.
His frail, small body.
Shouyou.
His body, right into an office building.
He jumped in front of the bus.
"HINATA!" Both Sugawara and Daichi shouted in sync with each other as they barreled towards him.
"Hinata!" Suga shouted as he lifted up the boy's head. He was already cold. "Daichi!"
"I-I-I," he fiddled with his phone, trying to call and ambulance.
=============
As the truck pulled up to the teenagers, they quickly put Hinata in, taking Suga and Daichi back with them.
They sat there in shock as they watched the life slowly drain from Shouyou's body, and his flesh changed color. The people with them tried to get out at least one word of what possibly happened, but they were in such shock that they couldn't even glance at one another. All they could do was stare at the sight before them. At the broken and near lifeless Hinata that laid before them.
"Hinata, you baka..." Daichi muttered out.
"Daichi. Don't say that."
===========
As they pulled up to the hospital, the boys ran with the men from the ambulance to the emergency ER, where they were shuffled out of.
"Let's go wait- in Kageyama's room..."
As they walked upstairs, they walked into a room with no more doctors, and no more nurses. All that remained was a body on the bed, and a beeping heart monitor.
Kageyama was doing just fine.
But Hinata was a different story.
==========
1:27
The clock ticking now began to annoy the two third year volleyball players, just as it had annoyed Hinata.
Maki walked up to the boys, as they now sat in the waiting room, a shocked expression trickling along her face.
"He- he's- a-" She tried speaking as she faltered with her words.
"What's going on with Hinata?!" Sugawara cut her off.
"He's- Shouyou-"
"Dead." A doctor came behind her and placed his hand on her shoulder, in his own way as a sign of comfort.
He finished the words for her. The painful and truthful words that she didn't want nor did she let escape from her lips. In a blunt matter.
Dead.
As of 1:18 a.m, Hinata Shouyou was pronounced dead.
"H-Hinata... Is... Dead?" Koshi quivered in both shock and sadness as he felt his legs go numb and he fell to the floor.
"You say it as if it had no meaning." Daichi replied to the doctor's rhetorical statement. His face shadowed and hands balled into fists.
"I'm sorry, young man?" The doctor asked confused as his hand left Maki's shoulder.
"You say that he's dead as if it means nothing. It's no big deal. The 15 year old boy just died from getting hit by a bus at 11:30 at night. He was thrown into a damn building, bruised and lifeless from the moment he got into the truck and was brought here. He just killed himself over the boy that's still in his coma, alive and breathing. But oh, that's right; I forgot that it means nothing!" He shouted at the man standing before him, slightly shocked.
"Daichi. Calm down, there's nothing they could have done-"
"That's not what I'm saying. I'm simply pointing out the things that I had forgotten about that are meaningless about a 15 year old committing suicide in the middle of the night, by throwing himself in front of a bus, after saying that he's sorry and goodbye. That it was all his fault, when none of it was."
"I'm sorry, kid, you seem to have misunder-"
"I understood enough. Let's go Suga." He finally states as he pulled the sulking co-captain up from the ground, and to Kageyama's room.
They sat in chairs until the sun had risen, and the sleepless boys remained sitting, as they looked back at the clock.
7:56
That damn clock.
Always ticking, always moving, always tic, tic, tic.
It was something that everyone payed attention to, learned, needed, kept track of.
Always timed from the moment you first came into the world, the best second of your life, the most important days of a lifetime, all down to the second that you drew the last breath of it all, as you let it escape from your lungs and back into the world where someone else was relying on their own time.
Time
Time
Time
Tic
Tic
Tic
"That damn clock." Daichi muttered as he rubbed his eyes and his temples from the annoyance that the loud sound of the clock, as it rang through his ears. "I'm this close to throwing it out the window."
"I can't see it, but I've been listening to it for the last three weeks." A miserable voice said back to him, unexpectedly.
He turned to the direction that he had heard the voice come from, almost at the corner of the room. His hair stuck to his face and his eyes clouded in a grey puff, covering both the iris' and and the pupils. He clutched a large stuffed bear in his arms, as he leaned his body against the wall, sitting on the bed. Tears rolled down his face, yet no sobs were heard.
"K-"
"Did you know that most people in a coma can actually hear things that are going on around them?" He asked as he cut him off. "Stories, people talking, random things, everything. Everything Hinata had told me, I could hear it. All of it. Sometimes I just wanted to tell him to shut up and go home, that boke never knew when to stop talking... but other times I never wanted him to leave."
"Kageyama-"
"Where's Hinata, Daichi?" The spot that he looked at never changed, he never moved his head, in a new direction. He didn't know where to look.
"Kagayama... Hinata-"
"Is gone?" He questioned.
"... yes."
"Do you know what the last thing I remember seeing was?" He asked him.
"No." He sadly responded.
"Hinata. He was crying, and screaming out my name. I remember every detail of his face. The tears that rolled down his cheeks, his quivering lip, the horror in his eyes, my own reflection in the gloss from them, everything, down to the second that it all went blank. I could even hear him in the truck, when he said that he loved me. But I couldn't answer- tell him my feelings back."
Hinata was the last thing he would ever see again. Hinata crying as horror struck his face, worried for Kageyama's life.
"Kageyama, when did you wake up?"
"I don't know, I couldn't see the clock, all I could hear was the loud ticking sound that came from it."
"Kageyama, I'm so sorry." Sugawara whimpered.
"It's not your fault, guys. I couldn't save him."
"Yes you did, we couldn't."
"No. I kept my promise... So why do I feel so empty? I don't understand, Sugawara. I kept my promise, just as I said I would. I was here the entire time for him, and I never stopped fighting. I could hear the doctors surround me and everyone as they were talking... I knew what would happen to me if I woke up, and I heard what everyone said to me. Yet I still fought, so why? Why do I feel as though I'm empty inside?"
"You know that Hinata is..."
"Gone? Yes." His voice cracked.
"Kagayama, what did you mean when you said that you could answer him, and tell him your feelings back?"
"I... I love Hinata."
