Chapter 4

Hinata awoke early in the morning, drool trickling along his pillow and curling from the end of his lip.

It had already been a week since the accident and there hadn't been a single day that Hinata didn't go to the hospital. In the beginning he had tried to go to practice before he would head off and visit, but he just couldn't focus, and he wasn't very pleasant to be around if he needed cheering up. Sugawara and Daichi had tried to lighten him up a bit, even though they were almost just as sad on the inside, but to no avail. Each time he would just shut them out and get frustrated with his lack of progress during their practices. Suga would toss to him and he could still hit a majority of the spikes, but it just wasn't the same, and every time he would miss, it would be over something so large that he felt disappointed about it.
Everytime he made a mistake he would think about what Kageyama would say to him...

He got up and quickly made his bed, making sure to put the fast setter's jersey in his backpack. He slept with it every night. Never once did he let it slip through his fingers. And neither will he let Kageyama.

He changed his clothes and brushed his teeth, grabbing his backpack on his way out the door, as he said goodbye to his sister who was playing with her friend in the yard.

He hopped onto his bike and rode down to the hospital to visit Kageyama today.

==============

After he locked up his bike, he strode in through the automatic doors in the front of the building.

"Good morning, Shouyou." A young nurse greeted him.

"Good morning, Maki. How is he today?" He asked as he pressed his palms against the rim of the cold counter.

"The same as usual... You're more then welcome to go and see him."

"Arigatou. Have a great Saturday."

"You too."

He walked down the hall and up to the elevator, making his way to Kageyama's room. He peaked his head in and the first thing he looked at was the heart monitor; same as every other time he visits.

"Hi Kageyama-kun~"

He jumped in through the door and walked up to the foot of his bed, placing his backpack on the floor beneath the chair, right after grabbing the jersey from the loose pocket.

"I brought your jersey back!" He smiled in the sunlight that had been peeking through the open blinds. "I'm sorry that I had it for so long. I took it on accident... And I didn't really want to bring it back, but it's okay. You'll wake up soon so I don't need it anymore."

He neatly refolded the large shirt and placed it on the chair. Then he hopped up on the foot of the bed, crossing his legs as he brightly smiled and looked down at Kageyama's face that remained resting in front of him.

"Everyone misses you by the way. I know that if you could go and see them right now you'd be tackled with endless hugs, even by Tsukishima." He lightly laughed. "And then you'd probably yell at me for my lack of practice lately. I go when I can sometimes, but it's just not the same without you, and I'd rather be here and see you for a longer time everyday. I want to make sure that you're all caught up on what's been going on lately when you wake up."

He looked down at his face. He had much more color then a few days ago, he had looked so pale then. His cheeks even looked slightly flushed, which became much more noticeable because of his shiny black hair that couldn't seem to stay unstuck from the teenagers slim face.

"Suga and Daichi have been making jokes about how Nishinoya-Senpai is becoming a better setter then you. They say that you better hurry and wake up before a libero surpasses you at setting a volleyball." He lightly laughed again.

He looked out through the windows, and at the brightly lit up city that the evening sun seemed to cascade over, covering every rim of the tall buildings that laid out before him.

"I wonder what you're dreaming about..." He tilted his head to the side as he looked back at Kageyama in curiosity. He wanted to know very badly what Kageyama was dreaming about. Some days he would be so curious as to what it was that he would try different ways to figure it out. One afternoon he was so frustrated with the fact that he couldn't figure it out that he had tried to smash their faces together, until a nurse had come in and had to pry him off of Kageyama. That's how he met Maki.

'Am I in your dreams? What about everybody else?'

An average sized woman appeared through the doorway, looking at Hinata with a curious expression as he stared in deep thought at Kageyama.

"Shouyou?"

"Hmm? Oh. What is it, Maki?"

"I'm going to get something from the cafeteria downstairs. I'm sure that you haven't eaten anything yet, would you like for me to get you something?" She looked at Kageyama and then back at the orangette.

"Really? What time is it?"

Maki pulled one of the sleeves of her scrubs up from her wrist, revealing a beautiful white watch.

"11:36."

"Do you mind grabbing me something small for lunch actually? Here." He grabbed his backpack and pulled out a small bunch of cash that was crinkled up in the front pocket.

"No, no. I'm more then happy to do that for you, my treat."

"A-are you sure?"

"Yep. I'll be right be back with something for you." She finished as she bounced back through the doorway, quickly stopping as the sound of her shoes squeaking pulled through the room. "Don't kill Tobio while I'm gone, got it?" She winked.

"Would you stop with that? I only wanted to know what he was dreaming about!"

She smiled as she left and turned down the corner to get the two of them some food from downstairs, bumping into one of the doctors as she turned for the elevators.

"Oh, I'm sorry Amaya, I didn't see you there." The doctor said to her.

"No, it's my fault, I'm sorry Ono." She told him.

"Where are you heading off to?"

"I'm getting some food for Shouyou and I." She responded as she smiled at him.

"Shouyou... Oh that's right, the boy whose friend was in the car accident. How is he by the way?"

"He's been better I'm sure, but he comes to visit everyday, he says that he wants to make sure Tobio is caught up with everything that happened when he was gone by the time he wakes up."

"You mean, if he wakes up."

"What?"

"Have you checked his paperwork? Kageyama Tobio has a very slim chance of even getting out of his coma, and if he does then he will very well likely never see again."

"Are you sure that's correct? I mean Shouyou seems so positive that he'll wake up, It's like nothing can tell him otherwise." She looked at him confused. Could they be talking about the same person?

"I'm his doctor myself, Amaya. I worry for that boy. Like you said, he's been here everyday, and I believe that he's taking on some personal ways of grieving." He lightly shook his head.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Most people go through steps that follow with the loss of someone that they love and I've seen things with him such as lessening his eating, denial, detachment, things like that. And many people go through things that pertain more to violence, although he clearly doesn't do any of those things. But there's one that I don't see very often in people, but I think it's another thing that's happening to him. If you watch him carefully I believe that he's trying to think about a better world in Kageyama Tobio's mind. I've seen him try to rationalize things that he could be "dreaming" about, but everytime he thinks of something, he rejects it. I believe that it's because he wants to think about a fantasy world that he could create to pull him out of his coma, but he doesn't want any of them to be true, he only wants the world that he's in now to be the one that his friend will come back to. It worries me, because it's like trying to chase a reality that can't exist. Kageyama Tobio will not wake up, and I fear that even when he realizes it, he will refuse to accept the fact. That boy is holding onto more false hope then he can keep up with." Dr. Ono patted her on the shoulder before heading back down the hallway that she had came from, clearly leaving for the day.

'But- He's so sure of it.'

============

"Here Shouyou!" She called as she showed up with two trays filled up with food.

"E-eh? I said I only needed something small, Maki-San."

"Who said you get a whole tray?" She teased.

She plopped one of the trays onto the counter, resting the other on her lap.

"That one's for you. I expect for you to finish most of it. I know that you haven't been eating much."

"Arigatou. Who says I haven't been eating much lately?"

"Your body. You're getting thinner, just slightly, but I can still notice. And your muscles are seeming to lose a tiny bit of their mass, so you haven't been going to your volleyball practices, have you?"

He dropped his head slightly, looking away from her and at Kageyama instead. He just stayed quiet.

For a few minutes silence hung in the air, until Maki spoke up.

"So, why do you want to know what he's dreaming about so badly?"

Hinata thought about it for a moment; he didn't know how to explain it. "I want to know what life is like in his mind. Is it better in there, or from what he does out here? Am I in it?" He didn't direct it at her, it was almost like an answer for himself, so that he could understand.

"Well, what do you dream about?"

"Eh? Nani?"

"You want to know what Tobio is dreaming about, but what is it that you dream about when you sleep?" She asked him.

"I-I don't know... I haven't had a good dream in a long time..."

"What do you remember dreaming about then?"

He hesitated for a moment, but then gave out a clear answer. "Volleyball... And Kageyama."

"Why?"

"They both make me happy. And I'll always have them both in my life." He gave a frail smile.

"Then maybe that's what he dreams about too. You and volleyball. People dream about what makes them happiest in life, things that they can't live without. Maybe he's dreaming about you."

'And his gross yogurt drinks..' He added to himself.

He smiled at the idea that she had put into his head, and he picked up the large amount of food that she had brought for him, he started leating it as he thanked her once more.

===========

Time seemed to fly by as the day progressed. Hinata made sure to fill Kageyama in on everything that's happened since he last visited, yesterday. Apparently a lot can happen in less than 24 hours. He didn't leave out a single detail, making sure to include everything ranging from Ryū's and Noya's fight with some 3rd years from another school over Kiyoko, to Natsu spilling her bowl of fruit.

"C'mon Kageyama, how long are you going to keep me waiting? I need to hit another minus tempo again. Oh! Better yet, I'll just have Nishinoya-senpai toss one to me." He teased the sleeping setter.

Hinata looked back up at the clock against the wall.

8:10

"Hinata? What are you still doing here? Your mother must be worried sick." Kageyama's mom came walking in through the door.

"Not really, she knows where I am. I'm sure that she's fine."

"Would you like for me to take you home?" She asked him.

"Actually... Could I just stay here tonight? There isn't any school tomorrow and Maki-San says that it's okay."

"Maki?"

"The nurse at the front desk, Amaya Maki, and I'm sure that my mom would be perfectly fine with it."

"Um, as long it's okay with your mom."

"Really?!"

Hinata was ecstatic, he would get to stay the night there with Kageyama. He could make more cheesy jokes and tell him even the tiniest of things that he might have forgotten, even though he wouldn't respond. He could smile at Kageyama, even though he wouldn't get one in return, and he could play little games with him, even though he would have to move all of the stuff for Kageyama on his own.

"Yes, really."

He ran through the doors and down to the desk that the female nurse was sitting at, grabbing her stuff so that she could leave.

"Shouyou?"

"Can I borrow your phone? I promise that It'll only take a second."

She willingly handed over the small device to him and he called his mom, explaining to her that he would be staying there for the night and would return home in the morning.

"Arigatou!" He thanked her as he handed the phone back, waving goodbye as she left the building.

============

After about another hour Kageyama's mom left, and she told Hinata that if he needed anything at all, all he had to do was use the phone in the hall and give her a call.

After she had exited the building, he thought about different things to do until he got tired and wanted to go to bed, but nothing seemed like as much fun as he had pictured, so he just decided to talk to Kageyama.

"I'm still upset that I don't know what you're dreaming about Kageyama." He told him as he sat upside down in the chair and pouted.
"Maybe getting hit in the back of the head with a volleyball? Or maybe you're beating up that gross yogurt drink machine again? Oh, wait! You're dreaming about surpassing Oikawa! .... No that doesn't seem right, either."

He still tried to figure out what it was that was going through his mind, even though nothing seemed to be correct that he was guessing.

"It's getting late." Hinata yawned as he stretched his arms out, moving around to get comfy in the chair. "I'm going to bed, goodnight."

He rested in the chair, moving in almost every direction that you could think of, until he was sick of moving around anymore.

"I can't sleep Kageyama. Want to trade positions?" He smiled at first, but then it quickly faded as he began to hate himself over the joke that he had just made. "Kageyama-Kun, do you mind if I lay down in bed with you?"

'It's not like he'll answer.' He thought to himself.

He crawled into the bed with him, laying down and getting comfy until he could finally dozed off into a deep sleep.

=============

Hinata tossed around as the sunlight hit his face, engulfing both his and Kageyama's bodies. He wiggled around and tried desperately to go back to bed.

"Quit kickin' me, dumbass." He heard a slight sneer.

His eyes shot open from the sound of the familiar voice that rang through his ears, Kageyama's voice.

Now standing by the small table was a tall figure, engulfed and surrounded in the morning light, making it hard to see. Their black hair stuck to their face, and slender figure looked so familiar to the spiker.

"Kageyama!" He shouted as he shot up from the bed, tackling his best friend to the ground.

"Get off, Hinata! I'm wearing a damn hospital gown!" He pushed the small boy off of him and got a look in return.

"Wait! You're looking at me!" Hinata shouted in both relief and astonishment. "You're awake and you're looking at me!"

"Of course I am, why wouldn't I be looking at you? Are you pretending to be invisible or something?" He asked him, confused.

"You're not blind!"

"Blind? Why would I be b-"

"I missed you!" He grabbed Kageyama and brought him into a tight, everlasting embrace, that he never wanted to let go of.

"I missed you too, Hinata. What happened? I don't remember anything really."

"We were walking home from practice, and you pushed me out of the way of a car, and you were hit." He choked out.

"Hit- I was hit by a car?" He questioned. "But- I mean I feel fine, nothing feels broken."

"Well, you are on some pretty serious pain killers right now, they'll probably wear off soon."

"How long was I out for?" He asked.

"About a week, I thought it was going to be longer, but I didn't want it to be at all."

"Well I did keep my promise didn't I?"

"Yeah, you did, but it took quite awhile." He retorted.

"Hey, I still kept it. A promise is a promise."

Hinata began to fidget with his fingers, trying to find the right words to say. "Kageyama there's something I've wanted to tell you-"

"What the hell is that?" He pointed near the doorway, and at a small refrigerator with a glass front, a basket sitting inside from Noya and Tanaka.

"Oh, Nishinoya and Tanaka brought that for you, everyone brought something. It's filled with those yogurt drinks that you like from the vending machine outside of the gym."

"The what I like, Yogurt drinks? Why would they think that? Those are pretty gross."

"Well Ya, I mean- wait. What did you just say?"

The words coming from Kageyama's mouth hit him like they were spoken in slow motion. "Those are pretty gross." He replied, blatantly.

"Those are- gross?"

"Are you okay, Hinata? You look like you're going to be sick."

'Gross. They're gross.' He continued to repeat in his mind.

"Hinata." Kageyama repeated.

"Shouyou."

"Shouyou."

"Shouyou, wake up."

Hinata jerked awake from the sound of his name being repeated, yet again.

"Are- are you okay?" Maki asked him.

Hinata looked all around him, taking in everything that he could see.
"It was a dream. Just a dream."

"What was a dream? Are you okay?"

"It was just a dream." He repeated as he looked to his right, seeing a sleeping Kageyama laying down beside him. "Nothing more."

"Are you okay, Shouyou? I brought you some breakfast, I figured that you'd be hungry." She said as she wearily placed a bag of food on the chair.

'It was just a dream.'
