Chapter 1
3rd person POV

It was the end of practice and both Kageyama and Hinata were worn out. This had to of been one of their longest practices yet.

Their faces and clothing were drenched in sweat, hair and clothes sticking loosely to their skin, and shoes squeaking against the finished wooden floors of the gym as they walked over to get water, panting.

They both took large swigs of water as their bottles instantly reached the rim of their lips. The cool liquid quickly running down their throats.

Kageyama stole a quick glance as Hinata poured the remaining water he had over his head, the water slowly running down the rest of his body.

A slight tint of pink moved along Kageyama's cheeks as he looked closer at the short boy with droopy wet hair. 'How could someone so little have such large muscles?' He questioned in his mind.

A quiet voice pulled him back from his thoughts, "Oi, Kageyama, are you okay?" Hinata questioned.

"Of course I'm okay, dumb ass. Why would you ask?"

"No reason, your face just looks a little red."

He thought about it for a moment, making sure to quickly respond. "Well yeah, we just finished one of our toughest practices of the year." He scoffed.

"Yeah, I suppose." He shrugged.

"Hey, are you hungry?" The orange haired boy asked with a slight shine in his eyes.

"Yes."

"Do you want to go grab some dinner?" He asked him.

"Sure."

Shouyou lept into the air, his feet skimming the center of his palms just before gravity pulled him back down to the ground. He ran and grabbed his duffle bag, all packed and ready to go.

Kageyama gave him a look, his eyebrow raised as his stomach gave off a very loud and rumbling noise.

"Hehe. Like I said, let's go eat." He said eagerly as he rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand.

=====================

The boys walked down the dark and empty street. Hinata pulling his bike along side him as he walked close to Kageyama on the side of the road.

It was mainly dark outside, except for the moon and occasional street light that would shine brightly above their heads, only to have the darkness appear above them once more.

"Your recieves are getting better." Kageyama remarked, taking a bite from his dumpling just after.

'Did Kageyama just give me a compliment? And on my recieves?' He thought, astonished.

He looked up at the taller boy who was still chewing his food. He swallowed the food that was in his mouth as well, beginning to talk. "Really?"

"Uh hmm." He nodded.

"See, I told you that I would get better! I still have the chance to become Karasuno's Ace!" He shouted, raising his hands and almost dropping both his bike and his dumpling.

"I thought we went over this, dumbass. You're the perfect Decoy. D-e-c-o-y." He sounded it out for him.

Hinata lowered his head in disappointment, a small pout curling downwards on the ends of his lips.

Silence hung in the air, as the two remained quiet for a few moments.

Hinata suddenly spoke up, breaking the calming sound of nothing that stuck between them.
"Am I not good enough?"

"Eh?"

"Do you only see me as a good decoy because you don't think that I'm good enough to become the Ace? Is it because Asahi is bigger and stronger than me?"

"Where did you get that idea from? I never said that."

"You never said anything different though." He began to slightly pout, the dark sky above his head, causing a faint shadow to cover his eyes.

Of course he was sad. Kageyama is the one who he was trying to countlessly impress, trial and error as it was, he still succeeded at times; he smiled the brightest when he impressed the 'great king.' He found it his goal to be good enough for his idol, Kageyama Tobio, to look up to him for once. He was still fascinated with the Tiny Giant, he loved him and still found him praisable. Kageyama was more realistic however, he saw him nearly everyday, and had grown close to him. The way that he looked up to the two was in different ways.

"It's not that I don't think you couldn't do it... It's that I think you'd be a greater help to the team by doing what you do now, what you do best. Being the greatest decoy." He said it bluntly, as if he should have already known this, and realized it a very long time ago.

"Kageyama?"

"Yes?"

"Why do you play volleyball?" He questioned with general curiosity.

"You already know that."

"But why do you still do it? It's not like I can hit your tosses 100% of the time yet. I can still miss one of them on occasion, and it isn't like you have much to improve on."

They both stopped walking. He turned to face the orange haired boy, looking down at his face as he did so. 'Because I get to help you, to see you.' He thought to himself, though he knew that he couldn't say those words to him. He pondered on the question for a moment more, giving the best response that he could think of. "I'm not afraid that no one will hit my tosses, and everyone has room to improve. I'm not afraid of you missing a toss, no matter who it comes from, I know that you'll be there to hit it. Besides," He waved his hand as he threw away his rapper, "No one can do something 100% of the time, Hinata."

He nodded his head, carefully thinking Kags words over.

"It's getting late." Kageyama stated, interrupting his thoughts.

Hinata looked down at his watch, "Yeah, it is. I better get going."

He felt saddened by what Kageyama had said to him, though he knew that there was no reason to. He was simply reassuring him; it was the opposite intention of what it had caused, he was trying to cheer him up. He couldn't figure out why he felt sad. Could it be because he now had to return home, and leave Kageyama behind?

Saddened he slowly slipped onto the seat of his bike, his hands resting on the handles as he quickly pushed his feet onto the pedals. He pushed on the pedals of his bike, quickly crossing the road, another one of the occasional lights surrounding his body as he crossed, but this one had seemed to be brighter than the others.

"HInaTa!"

Something had hit his lower back, hard. He was thrown off of his bike and into the thick metal railing along the edge of the road. He rubbed the back of his head, both of his eyes barely peaked open as the pain from the impact began to hit him. But what he saw was more painful than anything springing forth in his body.

"KAge-"

He cut off his own voice as a car had instantly smashed into a tall figure before him. It was launched nearly 10 yards in front of the car, its body skidding across the ground for a mere two feet after the impact.

The figure didn't move, it only remained on the floor, breathless and cold looking under the deep shadows from the night sky.

Hinata rushed to his feet, the world seemed to move in slow motion, slower than he had ever seen from a spiking point. It was almost as if time had come to a stand still, and he was the only one who could see what was going on, the only one that could still move in the shadows of the motionless night.

He ran, faster than he ever has, and lept over to Kageyama's side. He was screaming out his name, calling for him to keep his eyes open, as the color flushed from his skin and his eyelids slowly drooped downward, begging for him to just sleep.

He couldn't hear what Hinata was saying, only bits and pieces of it managed to connect in his mind, his vision slowly going dark as the sight of Hinata screaming and crying out for him began to fade from his sight.

Hinata sat next to Kageyama's face, tears pouring from his eyes as he pleaded for him to stay awake.

"Kageyama!" He shouted. "Don't leave me! This isn't funny, get up! You can't die on me! Don't die, Kageyama!"

The tall boy found himself feeling a faint smile creep up from one of the corners of his lips, though he couldn't see Hinata's face anymore he could hear his sobs as he leaned over his body, tears dripping from his chin and onto the cold and rugged asphalt that he laid on. "I'm not- gon-na leave you, okay dumb- ass?" He choked out.

"Promise me, Kageyama, promise that you'll wait until an ambulance gets here." He managed to ask in between his sobs of despair.

"I- I promise."

The woman who had hit Kageyama had already called an ambulance, standing at the open door of her car as she looked at the two boys, scared of what could happen next.

"Look Kageyama, they're almost here."

He stayed silent.

"C'mon, talk to me!"

Silence filled the air as more tension began to rise.

"Listen Kageyama, I can hear it, just say something!" He snapped at the resting boy.

"Yea Hina-ta, I- I can hea-r it too." He responded very slowly.

The ambulance turned the corner sharply and pulled up to the two boys and loaded them in as quickly and carefully as possible. They shut the doors to the back of the truck, as they drove off to the hospital.

Hinata looked at Kageyama with great concern, he wanted to be mad, no- he was mad. Mad that he had pushed him out of the way so that he could take the hit instead. Mad that it was his fault for being such and idiot. Mad that this was all his fault.

"You made me a promise." He repeated to Kageyama as he sat next to him, unaware if he could even hear his words as his pale face rested on the bed. His eyes were closed.

"You made me a promise..."

"Please don't break it, Kageyama... "

He could feel the truck come to a slow stop as they pulled up to the hospital. Before they opened the doors he repeated it once more.

"I love you, you stupid idiot. Please don't break your promise. I need you to keep it..."
