Chapter 3: A Night To Remember...Unfortunately
It had been a few days since Frost Star had escaped from the Pipeline and had beaten down Barry, and Barry was fully healed up and currently was doing some speed training, though he couldn't fully focus. For days he had been thinking about what Frost Star had said constantly, about how the said Speedster was his son in a parallel world...through Savitar...and because of all the events that had happened between him and Savitar, only with one of the events were Barry lost to Savitar, coming true ended up making Frost Star becoming hell bent on getting revenge on him.
He didn't notice Caitlin coming into the room, one of the few times he didn't, but in this case Caitlin didn't mind and was understanding on it as she knew that the recent events had rattled up Barry, if not mentally then emotionally. Still, she had to admit, there was something soothing and intriguing to watching Barry run around at super-human speeds, and she couldn't think why entirely. Barry soon quickly noticed her, and soon ran over towards her, causing her hair to fly about a bit in the process, which wasn't too unusual.
"Hey, what's up?" He asked Caitlin, Caitlin managed to catch herself after a bit and then soon said to her speedster crush "Still no sign of Frost Star, but Cisco was wondering if you'd want to go out for drinks tonight." Barry laughed a soft laugh a bit before saying "Yeah, sure. You coming?" Caitlin smiled a bit before saying "Sure. I could use a drink." Barry chuckled a bit before saying "Be careful. In case we have a repeat incident of the "Summer Lovin'" drunken singing." He said that with a laugh, Caitlin blushing a bit, a little surprised that Barry still remembers that day despite it being years ago.
"Well it was worth it to hear you sing." She chuckled, Barry smiling a bit before asking "Is it just us 3 or do you want the others? Because Joe will be...more than a little busy now." He chuckled a bit, Caitlin nodding in understanding. "Just the 3 of us. Cisco's idea." Barry chuckling before saying. "All right. Get Cisco to text me the address and I'll meet you both there." Caitlin nodded before walking off. Barry smirked a bit...but his smile slowly faded as he wondered what Iris would say. Nowadays the only days he ever got alone with Cisco and Caitlin were when they were fighting meta-humans together or when they go to do Laser Tag. Outside of that, they barely get any chance to be away from the others.
Diggle was fine, and he really had nothing against the guy at all, in fact he can safely say that Diggle is one of his best friends now compared to when they first met, which as he thinks about it is most likely his fault that they didn't get off on a perfect note as he wasn't the best when he came back...that and also the relationship problems and those extremely awkward relationship council sessions Iris made him go on with her. He loved her, he wouldn't have married her if he didn't, but there were times were even he questioned if he'd made the right choice.
He had been in love with her since they were kids, and she did help him out on a number of occasions...but ever since he came out of the Speed Force after they defeated Savitar, things have been strained and difficult between the two, and they had been arguing a lot more often and he hadn't been able to spend more time with his friends ever since that day, and it was really making him feel depressed and upset at times. He was thankful that Caitlin and Cisco were understanding at least, or had been after he apologized. He began to wonder if they really were destined to be together.
The appearance of Nora, their daughter, hadn't made things any easier as well. He and Nora definitely got on, and not just because she had told him that he hadn't been in her life after the dreaded news article said he'd vanished...and had still been missing for 25 years afterwards...there was no denying that ever since Nora introduced herself to them the two had formed a near inseparable bond that could be formed from a father and daughter, and to his surprise Nora was practically everything that he was: a forensic scientist, a Speedster, kind and considerate, and very eager to help. Hell, she even got on really well with Cisco and Caitlin too and wanted to spend time with them as well...Iris on the other hand was another matter.
Nora treated Iris completely differently from how she treated him, almost as if being around Iris was an exercise in restraint. She never talked to her mum, she didn't have any interest in her hobbies or in spending time with her, and she just felt really, really awkward around her. If he had to compare Iris and Nora to himself and Nora, and he really didn't like to do that as a parent should not anyway, or shouldn't have to, it was clear that Nora had way more interest in Barry than she did in Iris. Why was that? Did something happen to them after he left...or did Iris's and Nora's family relationship dissolve and go downhill just as Caitlin's did with her mum?
He decided not to worry about it for now and just try to enjoy his night out. He grabbed his things and sped off to his place. He soon arrived at the place and noticed that only Iris was around, wondering where Nora had gotten to. "Hey, where's Nora?" He asked, Iris shrugged a little before saying "Not sure. She arrived, asked where you were, and then went off. Why do you ask?" she asked, Barry simply shrugged a bit speaking truthfully "I was just curious. Anyway, I just came here to drop my stuff off, I'm going out with the others tonight." He went to put the things down when Iris asked "I thought we could eat out tonight."
It was obvious she was trying to get him to stay, but Barry was not one to break a promise...well, not when it came to his friends that is, excluding the times with the time travel and the Speed Force. "Sorry, I kind of promised I would go with them tonight. How about tomorrow though?" he apologized, to which Iris looked a little deflated at that, saying "I'm working the late shift tomorrow." She said to that, causing Barry to mentally sigh a bit. "Well...we'll figure something out then tomorrow before our shifts, how about that?" he proposed, hoping that it would help out with the situation. She nodded slowly at that before Barry pecked her on the cheek with a kiss before speeding off, saying "See ya later." before he sped off.
Cisco had already texted him where to go, and he soon arrived at the place, heading over to where Caitlin and Cisco were standing once he spotted them through the crowd, being able to recognize them anywhere...especially Caitlin...Barry smiled as he saw them and walked over to them, fist-bumping Cisco and hugging Caitlin as he got to the table. "Glad you could make it man." Cisco said with a smile, Barry chuckling as he said "Wouldn't have missed this for the world." before ordering a drink from the bar. The trio laughed, talked about old times...even sharing a few embarrassing moments for old times sake, and above all else: they had the best time in their lives that they hadn't had in a long time or since they were on the field together.
Soon Cisco had an evil idea...well, depending on a persons opinion on what could be considered "evil" that is...as he walked over to the person who was doing the karaoke for the bar, something that neither Barry nor Caitlin had payed any attention to at the time. Cisco knew that there was something between the two of them, even if they would probably never admit it in front of one another: Barry because he was married, though he doubted it was a "happy marriage", and Caitlin because they worked together and he knew she valued their friendship more than anything and didn't want to put that in jeopardy.
Cisco smirked a bit and soon whispered something to the people organizing the event. Barry noticed what Cisco was doing but was confused, gently taping Caitlin's shoulder as he looks to her briefly "What do you think Cisco's doing?" She turned to look, blushing a bit that Barry hadn't realized his fingers were still on her shoulder, before looking over at Cisco and seeing what he was doing. "Maybe he's going to sing?" she said, just as confused as Barry. Barry chuckled a bit saying "Well, as long as he's not drunk when he does, otherwise we might have nightmares for weeks." Caitlin laughed a little as well, imagining the same thing.
Soon they saw Cisco turn to them and smirk a bit evilly, which sent a chill down their spines at that. "Oh boy...I have a bad feeling about this." Caitlin said, to which Barry nodded slowly in agreement "You and me both." There fears were only confirmed when Cisco grabbed a microphone and said into it "Testing, testing, one, two...I want to call down my 2 buddies, Barry Allen and Caitlin Snow, at this point! Get your ass's down here! Or up, whichever it is..." To say that Barry and Caitlin were shocked speechless was an understatement, both simultaneously waving their hands over their necks as if trying to get out of it.
Cisco though would not be deterred from this, soon saying "Oh, come on, you know you want to! Come on, let's give them a helping hand!" Cisco said before beginning to repeat their names in a chanting manner, which then lead the rest of the pub that weren't staff members to do the same thing, much to the dismay of Barry and Caitlin. "They aren't going to stop until we go up there, are they?" Barry asked, Caitlin shaking her head a bit with a weary sigh, before the two finally relented and headed up to the stage, much to the cheers from Cisco and the rest of the bars customers. Barry and Caitlin shot Cisco a warning glare as they went up.
As the song began though, they were both startled a bit when they realized that the song Cisco had picked out for them was the same song that Barry and a much more drunken Caitlin had sang together years previous..."Summer Lovin'" by Grease. Neither knew that Cisco had found out what they had sung through Linda Park after Barry told her he was The Flash and whilst they were trying to attract Zoom's attention...that and there had been a recorded video version on YouTube that he had found once. To say that Caitlin was embarrassed by this would have been an understatement, but Barry's nervous but reassuring smile to her was enough to help her calm down a little as they began to sing the song together.
After the song:
To say that the duo singing together wasn't the song of the evening and didn't get the biggest round of applause of the entire night would have been a massive lie: naturally Cisco was surprised by how great of a singer Barry was, as he couldn't remember ever hearing Barry singing before, even though Caitlin and Kara both confirmed that he was an amazing singer to him and the others when they were trying to deal with Savitar...but he was even more surprised that Caitlin's singing voice, whilst admittedly a bit flat and not as good as Barry's, seemed to just compliment the two. Hell, she even seemed to enjoy herself when singing with Barry. If this was any proof that Barry and Caitlin liked each other, then Cisco would have no end of fun teasing them about it.
Barry and Caitlin soon returned to their table and Barry was laughing nervously and Caitlin was blushing like mad. "Twice in a lifetime. Who'd have thought huh?" Barry asking teasingly, which elected a small laugh from Caitlin. Cisco came over slowly with some drinks as a peace offering, seeing them give him a bit of an accusing look, before saying "Sorry about that, guys. But come on, you have to admit that you two were awesome out there together!" But just looked at each other nervously before laughing a little at their friends antics.
Barry was the first to speak up out of the two of them "Okay, yes, it was Cisco." Caitlin soon pointed a finger at Cisco before saying in a warning tone, even if was a friendly one "But next time you pull something like that, you'll have to be sleeping with 1 eye open." That certainly made Cisco shut up, as well as shiver uneasily on the spot at that, much to the amusement of his 2 best friends...unfortunately, their good night out was about to come to an abrupt end not too long later...
It was coming close to Midnight by the time the trio left the bar: Cisco was now stone dead drunk whilst Caitlin and Barry were leading their drunk friend to Caitlin's car, as Caitlin had volunteered to drive Cisco home as she wasn't drunk tonight, something which she was proud of. Barry and Caitlin laughed a bit at Cisco's drunken slurs and ranting, the guy barely able to form a proper word let alone a proper sentence. "He is going to have one hell of a hangover in the morning." Barry said with a knowing smirk on his face, which brought a small laugh from Caitlin as they got their drunken comrade in the back of her car.
"Well, he'll certainly be jealous of your hyper-metabolism and inability to get drunk. Then again, he should know better." Caitlin agreed. The two stood in front of one-another now, both trying to fight back a blush each that were threatening to surface on their cheeks. Barry smiled a bit as he soon said "Well...I'll, uh, see you tomorrow then." He said, surprised by how awkward he sounded a little, as he was never like this in front of Caitlin...or at least not that he knew of at least...Caitlin nodded a bit with a smile. "Yes, okay." Barry began to turn to leave, but Caitlin soon gently grabbed his arm and said to him "Hey, Barry?" Both of them felt like they had butterflies in their stomachs from her sudden action.
"Yes Cait?" Barry asked, causing Caitlin's heart to flutter at the use of her pet name...but before Caitlin could say what she was about to, she saw something in the distance and her face became that of shock as she shouted "Look out!" But her words came too late, because as soon as Barry attempted to quickly look to where she was looking...he felt a sudden excruciating pain in his side as they heard a loud bang sound, causing Barry to fall onto the ground, blood seeping from a wound! Barry had been shot! And the worst part was...he wasn't healing!
"BARRY!!!" Caitlin shouted out shocked and in fear, soon seeing a figure standing in the shadows with a strange, futuristic gun that looked like it belong in a Star Wars movie in hand. The person laugh a almost robotic laugh before vanishing back into the shadows again, its work done for now. Caitlin immediately went down to Barry's side, grabbing her medical kit as she called for help from the others, all the while she tried to patch Barry up to stop the bleeding and stabilize him...and all whilst saying "Stay with me Barry! Stay with me, please Barry!" What she didn't know was that a certain frozen speedster was watching from a roof top...and all he could do was glare down at the sight that he saw with disappointment.
