Chapter 2: How It All Began Pt.2...
Caitlin remained in the coma she had been forced into by the disastrous event that was the Particle Accelerator explosion for 9 long months, all the while during this time she had no idea what was going on outside in the world whilst she lay unconscious in the state she was in. After the Accelerator had gone off, S.T.A.R. Labs reputation had been destroyed. Cisco had gained new powers though from that night as well, being able to create portals that could allow him to travel through dimensions and to any place needed to go, and he could also channel his powers into a weapon to use against his enemies...not that he had a chance to test it out against anything other than dummies when he wasn't looking after Caitlin;s unconscious body...
The night of the explosion, Joe had found Caitlin and had brought her to the hospital, telling Cisco about what had happened to Caitlin once he had managed to get through to him. They knew that she had been struck by lightning, but they were dumbfounded and extremely surprised that she had not been killed by it. It took some time, but Dr. Wells had managed to convince some people and pull some strings to get Caitlin transferred to S.T.A.R. Labs for observations, after the heart rate monitors thought Caitlin was dying...when in reality her heart was beating far more faster then a human heart should have been beating normally. It was almost as if Wells knew what was happening to her...
There had been reports at the hospital that a unknown man in a cloak had tried to see Caitlin when she was still at the hospital, but he had gone missing when Joe and Cisco tried to inquire about it and was nowhere to be seen. The day that Caitlin did wake up however was when things got more complicated and strange, at least for her; because by that point Wells and Cisco, and even Joe when he found out through Cisco during those 9 months, albeit by accident, had begun to find out that Cisco and Caitlin weren't the only ones affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion...not that they had been able to act on it at the time.
All Caitlin could think of when she was in the coma was 3 things: the night Ronnie died, the night she was struck by lightning...and most of all, Barry. The latter had been more present in her mind then everything, and the only reason why she thought she saw him more was because she was seeing her regrets: her regrets for arguing with him at the party years ago, regrets for not telling him how much he actually meant to her, regrets for not going to see him wherever he was at the time...and regrets for their friendship being in tatters when he was killed. But on the day she was about to wake up...something different happened.
She was thinking of Barry once again, but this one was different. Most of the things she saw whenever she thought of Barry was the times that they had spent together as a duo or with their friends like Cisco...but what she saw was something she hadn't seen before, in fact the Barry she saw in this looked only a few years older then how he looked when they had last spoken to each other at the party, and he was laying down unconscious on a hospitals stretcher bed in a hospital room with a neck brace on, his left arm in a sling, his ribs bandaged up heavily, and wired up to a heartbeat monitor. It was a memory she had never seen before in her life, and it both shocked and scared her.
Then it changed once again to a scene were Barry was driving in his car in the middle of a forest road in the middle of the night, his destination was to Central City, and Caitlin knew instantly what this memory was, even if she hadn't been present at this one either...it was the day that Barry was killed...and soon she the moment when a tired Barry, who looked like he was struggling to stay awake behind the wheel at the time and looking for someplace to stop for a rest, was killed by a colliding car at high speeds that was way above the speed limit, causing both cars to crash off and into a nearby tree...killing Barry instantly as something from the colliding car smashed into through the window.
The two memories caused Caitlin to wake up screaming Barry's name with a start, awakening her from her 9 month long coma. She got an even bigger surprise when she saw a blue portal appear out of nowhere before Cisco jumped out of it, before he said surprised "Caitlin!? You're up!" Caitlin was unsure what was going on. It took some explaining from Cisco and Dr. Wells, who she was surprised to see was in a wheelchair now after the Particle Accelerator had gone haywire, but she found out that the lightning that had struck her had managed to transform her DNA and had altered her genetic structure, making her go to speeds that nobody could ever imagine reaching.
She had also found out that the same catastrophic event that had caused her to be struck by lightning and gain her speed powers had affected Cisco as well, allowing him to "vibe", as Cisco called it, glimpses into potential futures, or into peoples minds to relive certain events or memories, or allowing him or multiple people to travel from one place to another. It apparently could also be used as a handy little weapon against bad guys if needed. Naturally he had given himself a rather cool nickname of "Vibe", even if Caitlin did roll her eyes at that a bit at the name in slight amusement.
Naturally due to her scientific mind taking over her senses, she didn't quite believe her..."unique talents", as she called them, were real at the time until they had tested, and tested they were multiple times, each time surprising her just as much as the next. The fact of the matter was obvious now: she was now the fastest woman alive, she had powers that others would only dream of...and yet she felt completely unprepared with how to deal with them. It made her wish that Barry was still here right now, he would probably know...even if he would probably have joked about it at the time.
It did not take her long however to figure out what she could do with her powers: at first she wanted to just study them, run more tests on her newfound abilities, basically anything that seemed logical in her mind regarding this...however there was a part of her that told her to use her powers for good, to help people out. That soon did become the case however after she learned that she and Cisco were not the only ones affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion, as she had almost been attacked by a former CCPD officer that had been presumed dead, now causing problems for said organization by somehow using the weather as a weapon against them.
Despite this discovery that she was not the only one affected by the Particle Accelerator explosion like Cisco, she couldn't help but feel that they, S.T.A.R. Labs, had ruined a lot of lives because of that dreadful event 9 months ago, and right now she didn't know what to do herself. She knew that dealing with this "Weather Wizard", a name that Cisco had come up with, should be a matter for the police to deal with...however this was something far beyond what they could deal with, and something inside of her was screaming out to her that she should do something about it.
She was currently sitting in the Cortex right now, more specifically in her office, and she was looking down at a framed picture that had been taking years ago. The picture in question always made her feel sad, upset and lonely...but now, despite everything that was going on and everything that had gone on, all she could feel when she looked at the picture was a longing feel for one person in particular in the picture...because the picture in particular, was one of her with Barry and Cisco after one of Barry's musical performances, more specifically, the first time they had seen him performed.
She remembered it as if it was yesterday: Barry had given her and Cisco some tickets to a musical concert for that night, Cisco at the time teasing Barry if he was trying to get them to watch a "High School Musical" film at the time, as both of Barry's friends had known he was in the music group at the time, though this was before they knew he could sing. "All I'm asking you is to come and watch for me guys. If only as a favor to me." Barry had practically begged that day. Cisco seemed reluctant at the time, but Caitlin smiled a bit to Barry and made the decision for both her and Cisco "Of course we'll come, Barry." Cisco had almost tried to protest at that, but Barry was smiling happily at that and soon began heading off as he said "Thank you guys. I'll see you later tonight!"
He had then ran off to wherever he needed to, leaving a fuming Cisco and a smug Caitlin. Cisco complained to Cait on her making him go to the event, but Caitlin simply waved it off and said to her oldest friend "What is more important to you, Cisco? A night of doing nothing or going to the show to support your friend?" Cisco had to think on that a bit, but not for long before nodding a bit "Yeah, I guess you have a point." He said, though he was still clearly annoyed. Caitlin rolled her eyes and simply played to Cisco's childish behavior. "If you're lucky, there may be something to laugh at during the show, or lots of food to eat."
The evening itself went by surprisingly pleasantly, well at least for Caitlin as she had a love for musicals and musical events, one of many things she shared an interest in with Barry. The evening itself was sort of one big music festival between different High Schools, more or less, and whilst Cisco didn't enjoy it as much as she did: both Cisco and Caitlin enjoyed the evening. From what they and the crowd had been told: everyone that had been participating performed 2 different songs before the next ones come on the stage. Barry's lot, as Cisco bluntly put it, was going last.
She knew that Iris, Wally and Joe had been watching further back, as they had briefly spoken before they show began, and knew they had brought a camera for when Barry was performing, and she found that kind of sweet. Iris's boyfriend, Eddie, wasn't among the West's or them because, according to Iris, he was performing on the stage alongside Barry as one of the numerous people joining in as the backup singers...if that was the right words for it or not ones that Iris and Caitlin used for them.
Soon it came to the "main event" as Cisco teasing called it, and the lights went down low as Barry, Eddie and the rest of them came out onto the stage. Soon the lights began to turn on again as the first of the songs began to play, which was their own version of "Live While We're Young" by One Direction. To say that both Cisco and Caitlin, mostly Caitlin, had been left with their mouths wide open and made speechless for the briefest of times would have been a major understatement at the time: to Caitlin, Barry sounded like a god of the music world as he sang, and the dancing he did alongside his fellow singers like Eddie was expert levels of great. Whoever had taught him to do both sing and dance expertly should have been proud of Barry.
Caitlin even remembered that somehow she had gotten lost in Barry's voice and his dancing, watching him like a giddy fan girl...which I guess she technically was now. She didn't even remember getting up out of seat and cheering loudly with the crowd and, in particular, the Wests after the song had finished, noticing Barry smiling as he looked between her, Cisco and his adopted family. It didn't change when they did the next song, which was "Glad You Came" by The Wanted, and Caitlin was definitely one of Barry's 2 loudest supporters, or "cheer leaders" as both Cisco and Wally would call them when they next were handing out as a group, but for once Cait didn't care if she was heard or if people were staring. She was enjoying this way too much to care.
When the whole thing had finished, Barry reunited with his foster family and his friends, and Iris took a picture of the trio and, when she was able to get the picture sorted out, Barry gave Cait an extra copy of the picture to keep as a remembrance of the night. At first she was reluctant to because she thought Cisco might have wanted it, but Cisco only insisted that she keep it more. So she did what they asked and kept it. And every time she looked up at it right up until her...argument with Barry, she would look up at the picture with a smile of that night.
Caitlin continued to stare at the picture, but even as she did she felt herself tearing up a bit at the thought of her lost friend. "You know, if Barry was was here, he would probably have encouraged you to try to stop "Weather Wizard"." a familiar voice said behind her, causing Caitlin to turn and see Cisco standing at the doorway looking at the same picture she had been looking at. "How...how long have you been standing there?" Caitlin finally asked as she turned to put the picture down, which caused Cisco to laugh a bit, though humorlessly in this case, which was rare. "Long enough to know you've been day dreaming about the past again..."
He moved to stand next to his friend. "But you also know that I'm right, Caitlin." Cisco continued, and deep down she knew he was right. She sighed a bit as she sat down on the chair and turned towards her friend. "I know, Cisco...in fact I have a feeling that if Barry was here and had these...these powers...he'd have done just that." she closed her eyes sighing a bit, Cisco noticed this and asked slowly "Then what's the problem?" She slowly looked to him, a look of worry on her face as she said slowly "I'm not Barry, Cisco. I don't have his courage, his sense of justice. Worst of all...I don't have his confidence and reckless abandon."
Cisco knew she was listing off the qualities that made them fond of him, but it pained him to see his best friend trying to compare herself to Barry and yet hold herself in such low esteem. "You're right, you're not Barry...but that's not a bad thing." Caitlin looked to Cisco confused and with a raised eyebrow as Cisco explained "Caity, you're one of the smartest people I've ever known, maybe the smartest...though don't tell Dr. Wells that or he'll kill me..." That managed to bring a small smile to Caitlin's face and make her laugh a little, because it certainly was the use of the "Caity" nickname.
"But whilst you are one of the smartest people I've known...you also are one of the silliest people I've known as well because you sell yourself short too much. Especially after the night you and Barry thought with each other. You were always the one who keep me and Barry in check, hell Barry listened to you more because you genuinely worried about us a lot of the time. You're more brave and courageous than you know because you never gave up on your dreams when you had every right to after every bad thing that has been thrown at you in life, and you've always managed to be you, and I know for a fact you'd help out somebody in need of help, even if they do get on your nerves." He was referring to himself and a few previous school classmates or former work colleagues with that one.
"I don't see where you are going with this Cisco..." Caitlin said a little, but Cisco soon says to her "What I am saying is that, yes, you're not Barry, but that doesn't mean you are any less important. Barry may be gone, and yes you guys never parted on good terms...but I know for a fact if he was standing here with us now, he would encourage you to fulfill your potential and help stop people with...abilities like ours that are using them for ill good. And he'd be here to trying to help you through it, just like me and Dr. Wells. Because he cared for you greatly, and not just as a friend."
Caitlin could see the cocky smile on Cisco's face at that last part, saying slowly "How long...did you know...?" Cisco says to that after a bit of thinking "Since a few months before...that party. He wasn't as subtle as he liked to think about it, except around you. Neither were you." Caitlin shook her head a bit laughing a little. She always saw Cisco as a brother, and it was ironic that he would be trying to help her out in that way. Cisco soon said after a bit. "So, are you going to sit here moping all day and keep doubting yourself? Or are you going to be the super hero that I know you can be, "Flash"?"
Caitlin laughed a bit at his antics, surprisingly liking the nickname of "Flash"...although she would have thought he'd say "The Flash". She nodded a bit as she stood up, confidence in her movements and words. "Let's do this." Cisco smirked at that as he stood, saying way too happily to be healthy "Hell yeah! Let's go kick some meta-human butt!" Caitlin rolled her eyes at that as they walked off. Cisco presented Caitlin with a special suit that could help disguise her identity: it was a bright red suit that occasionally had some blue here and there, both being her favorite colors for 2 reasons: the red being one of them because of Barry and his silly red car at the time, or the colors he would use when he was sketching out super heroes on a notepad he sometimes carried.
Caitlin noticed that there was an eye mask above the main suit, which as the name suggested would only cover up her eyes. She looked to Cisco saying "How do you know that people like Joe or Iris won't recognize me because of my hair or eyes?" Cisco chuckled as he said vaguely. "Try it out and see." She raised her eyebrow at that, but did so anyway, using her speed to grab the suit, head to the ladies room and change before returning back to the cortex. When she returned, Cisco showed her a mirror and Caitlin was surprised when she saw that her hair and eyes were now the color of snow, ironically. Cisco just chuckled a bit.
"I...may have designed the suit to help change your hair and eyes to different colors. Because, come on: how many people do you know that have a look like that?" Cisco said, explaining what had happened. Caitlin would have argued on the question, but she thought it would have been harsh to say what had come to her mind. Still, she had to admit it did look nice on her. Perhaps in another life a different version of her had this colored hair and eyes, as tricky as it was to imagine.
It was after that that Caitlin sped off to the location of the "Weather Wizard" as soon as Cisco figured out his location. The CCPD were already there trying to capture the meta human with no success, but as soon as Caitlin arrived things took a turn for the better: using her speed powers, and a little quick thinking and helpful advice, to her advantage. She was able to defeat the "Weather Wizard", but Joe shot the meta human when Caitlin briefly lost focus. Needless to say that Joe, despite her new look, was able to recognize her...but what she didn't realize was that Joe was not the only one to recognize her on that night, or that she had been the only meta besides the "Weather Wizard" that had been in the vicinity...
It was about an hour before Joe came to S.T.A.R. Labs to confront Caitlin, Cisco and Dr. Wells, and to say that he was unhappy that Caitlin was risking her life like this to honor Barry's memory and to protect the city was an understatement...but he understood that it couldn't be prevented when they explained. "We have a chance to do some good here, in S.T.A.R. Labs, and to protect the city from others that want to do it ill. Barry would have wanted us to do this Joe...you know he would have Joe." Caitlin said, the Detective sighed a bit at that as he rubbed a hand over the back of his head before nodding slowly.
"Yeah, I know...I'm not exactly thrilled by it though. There is honoring Barry's memory, and then there is doing it in crazy style." He left the Labs after saying that, Cisco saying to her "He'll come around eventually. Probably..." Caitlin nodded a bit to that, before looking to Cisco and saying "Thank you for convincing me to do this, Cisco." Cisco nodded a bit smirking as he says "No problem. Just don't ask me to race you." the two laughed a bit at that, Dr Wells smirking a bit as he saw the friends laugh a bit...if only they knew what was going on inside his head...
Caitlin managed to get back to her place safely, smiling a bit as she entered her place and looked around checking the place. It had been left exactly the same as when she had last been in the place...however, Cait then noticed something on her bed that wasn't there when she was last at her place...it was a single red rose, and a picture of her with Barry with the words "Watch your back...'Flash'!" written on it. This shocked Caitlin and caused her to gasp in surprise at this...but little did she know that somebody in the shadows knew what why she had gotten that...as cold white eyes looked appeared in the shadows...and a cold wind suddenly went through the air.....
Author's Side-Note: For those confused why I didn't say much for the suit, it's because it's staying similar to the original suit design that was used in Season 1 of The Flash, just has some differences like the odd blue on the suit and the mask/hair and eyes changes that I mentioned. I really hope you enjoyed this, as it was a lot harder trying to write Part 2 then I thought it would be, and I wanted to focus more on Caitlin's emotional transition into becoming The Flash, hence the memory and Cisco.
The next chapter though will, hopefully, be a lot more interesting though and it will have a lot more character interactions and some action to it, I promise. Because it will have someone coming "back from the dead" and only Caitlin can bring him in back to the light from his icy darkness. Hope that wasn't too much of a spoiler, but if it was it's fine as I'm not too worried about it being known. Anyway, have a nice day and I hope you enjoyed.
