ESCAPE ROOM NIGHT, 6:02pm
Ellie made Lana follow her into Principal Rodman's office, where they'd both had the pleasure of spending so many of their evenings doing volunteer work. She opened the window, then turned to Lana, who looked at her quizzically, likely wondering why Ellie had brought her in here when they were barely on speaking terms.
Ellie got right to it, keeping her voice firm and level. "I know about the picture."
Lana's face relaxed into a smile. "Do you? I was wondering if he would tell you."
"Where is it?"
Lana's smile turned smug. "I happen to have it right here in my purse."
Ellie felt her heart go into her throat.
"Is that the only copy?"
"It's the only physical copy."
Of course Lana would have a digital copy. Ellie held her hand out. "Give it to me."
Lana obliged, reaching into her purse and then handing Ellie the photograph. Ellie took the lighter out of its usual place in Principal Rodman's desk drawer, and lit the edge of the photograph, holding it over his tin trash bin.
"Aren't the smoke detectors going to go off?" Lana asked, looking slightly alarmed.
"No. The window's open."
Lana furrowed her brow, looking at Ellie suspiciously.
"I used to smoke in the house all the time when I was younger. That's how I know the smoke detectors won't go off." Ellie dropped the evidence into the tin trash bin, watching it burn to ash.
"Smoking? Pyromania? You have a lot of secrets, Ellie."
Ellie rolled her eyes. "You know I'm not a pyromaniac."
"Then why burn the picture? Why not just put it through Principal Rodman's shredder?"
Ellie didn't need to entertain Lana's pointless questions; the woman knew that flames were much better at destroying evidence.
