Chapter 10

Bloodnight walked up to them. "I will go to the moonstone tonight." He faced the medicine den. "Greenleaf! We are going to the moonstone tonight."

Sunnyfeather came out instead. "I'll go. Greenleaf isn't..." He ended the sentence slowly, trying not to point out the fact that Greenleaf was old, and not looking well enough to travel.

"She can make it." Bloodnight said, ending the conversation. Greenleaf trudged out of the medicine den, pushing past Sunnyfeather.

"He's right, I can." Greenleaf said, slowly walking over to him.

"But-" Sunnyfeather started.

"No buts."

Willowmoon knew that Bloodnight had killed Eaglefeather, Slashfur, and Ravenlight. She knew Silverpaw was involved in it somehow. She wouldn't let Bloodnight travel to the moonstone with Greenleaf alone.

She watched as they walked out of camp that night. She crept out of the warrior den, and right as she was going to leave camp, something touched her back paw.

"Willowmoon?" A small, sad, voice came from below her. She looked down suddenly to see Dreamkit, who had a worried expression on her face.

"You're not leaving like Mudkit, are you? Should I try to stop you?"

Willowmoon suddenly felt bad for the little kit. She remembered the day her brother, Thunderkit, had been crushed by a falling tree in the middle of camp. She had suddenly become protective of herself and Scorchkit, not wanting to leave the nursery.

She laid down, curled her tail around her small cousin, and replied, "Of course not."
"Mkay. Where are you going then?" Dreamkit looked up at her with big dark blue eyes, she was the only kit in her litter to have that color. Sandkit had gold, Carrotkit had yellow, and Mudkit had the glassy blue, indicating blindness.

"I'm... just going for a walk."

"Mkay."
"Go back to the nursery, Midnightstorm will be worried."
"bye Willowmoon."
"Bye Dreamkit."
Dreamkit started to run over to the nursery but stopped halfway through.

"Stay safe, Willowmoon."

"You too Dreamkit."

Willowmoon hurried out of camp. She didn't want to miss Bloodnight and Greenleaf.

She followed their scents, which were faint, but she could still smell them. It started to rain. The cold, wet droplets hit her calico fur and spread like stars in the sky.

It felt like it had been moons before she reached the moonstone. She had caught up with Bloodnight and Greenleaf, and was creeping along the tunnel, following them. They eventually reached the bright, sparkling moonstone. Willowmoon felt as if she could hear StarClan and Thunderkit from here.

"Bloodnight, lay down and touch your nose to the moonstone." Greenleaf instructed.

For once, Bloodnight sounded worried. "But what if he's there. What if-"

"Nonsense. He is most likely still alive. And if he wasn't he probably wouldn't be in StarClan." Greenleaf said, her voice sounded as if she felt that they were wasting time.

Bloodnight touched his nose to the moonstone, and instead of dreams, the cats of StarClan appeared in front of the moonstone.

"What have you done, Bloodnight?!" A bright yellow, starry cat looked down at him.

"Oh Bloodnight." An old gray she-cat looked at him with sadness.

"Mother?"
Willowmoon stiffled a gasp. This was her fathers mother. She was related to this cat!

"Honeytuft. I thought you hated me!" Bloodnight yowled and stood up straighter.

Willowmoon watched as the bright yellow tom, Honeytuft, floated over and touched Greenleaf on the head with his nose. She crumpled to the ground, sleeping.

Willowmoon couldn't understand. Why couldn't Bloodnight have dreams?

A voice interrupted her thoughts.

"Willowmoon. I can see you. Come on out." Bloodnights mother was staring at her. Bloodnight whipped around and faced her as she walked into the opening.
"What are you doing here?!" He said with force. He glared at her and Honeytuft did too.

"I'm sorry I don't understand." Willowmoon said, her voice wavering. She knew she was taking a risk, trying to understand.

"Willowmoon. I'm Graysong. I'm your fathers mother." Said the gray she-cat. Graysong glanced at Honeytuft.

Honeytuft snorted. "I'm Honeytuft. I was a medicine cat. I'm Bluenight's father." Honeytuft spat the word with annoyance. He caught her opening her mouth to question his medicine cat duties. "Don't ask. I was a mouse-brain, thinking I liked this cat enough to stop being a medicine cat."
"He had to beg to be in StarClan." Graysong added, quietly.

"You still hated me. And Brokenpaw." Bloodnight said. "You didn't even come to his vigil when he died!"
Honeytuft gritted his teeth and looked away. Then he swung his head and pushed his face close to Bloodnights. "For me, I never had kits. You and Brokenpaw meant nothing to me. Ever."
Graysong tilted her head to the side, looking ashamed.
Bloodnight interrupted the sad silence. "Am I going to get my nine lives?"

"No. Redstar is still alive." Graysong replied.

Willowmoon swung her head to face Bloodnight. "You killed Slashfur and Ravenlight, but kept Redstar alive?" She said, surprised with Bloodnights treachery to the clan. She continued. "And what about Mudkit. And Eveningsea, and Eaglefeather! Why are they dead! And Swallowtail. You fox-heart, I miss her so much!"

"Swallowtail didn't die! And I wouldn't kill a kit!"

"Then why-"
"Bloodnight." A light voice, which came from a StarClan cat, was standing between Honeytuft and Graysong. The cat was the size of an apprentice. He was white with little pinkish tufts on his ears and tails.

"Brokenpaw!"

"Hi Bloodnight." Brokenpaw said, sadly and walked up to Bloodnight. "They gave me my warrior name when I joined StarClan. I'm Brokenheart now."

"Broken...heart. Who gave you it?" Bloodnight said, testing out the new name.

"Graysong."

"Ahem." Honeytuft cleared his throat. "What were we here for?"

"My lives."

"Which you won't be getting."

Bloodnight looked shocked.

"Why not?!"

Brokenheart stepped forward. "Really Bloodnight? You think you're worthy of them? What would Bumblestone think? Do you think he'd be... proud?"

"But I did it for him!"
Graysong spoke up. "He left the clan to protect you. You don't need to repay him by killing the cats that hated him."
"He left the clan because they hurt him! Not because I was in danger!"

"But you must understand that you were. You were becoming too aggressive. He didn't want cats to get hurt because of you."
"So I could've left!" Bloodnight looked as if he was stuck somewhere, searching for the truth about a cat Willowmoon had never heard of.

"Go home, Bloodnight. And tell your clanmates the truth."
