Chapter 7

I got out of the hospital the next day, despite me having no problems at all, they wanted to keep me in just in case. I took a deep breath and exhaled the fresh, morning air, and prepared to go to school.

I knew I hadn't missed much, there weren't any tests going on, or projects due. So if anything started I wouldn't be too far behind. While in the hospital, I was bored out of my mind. Besides the small tv, there was nothing to watch or do. They did let me walk around a bit, and talk to my parents when they were around and not working, but they wanted me to stay in bed. Just in case something happened.

I walked out my door as I yelled bye to my parents. The cold morning air was held at bay by my warm sweatshirt, and toque. I didn't usually wear pants, but the weather had called for it today. I brandished my green backpack and started my walk towards school, planning to stop by Liam's house on the way.

We had first block together anyways, so I figured I would meet up with him early to see how he was doing. There would be some things that shouldn't be discussed at school with other people around.

I walked the five minutes and got to his place just as he was leaving. I called out to him when he didn't notice me right away. He turned around and saw me, relief flooding his face.

"My god are you ok!? What happened!" He yelled rushing over.

"I'm fine," I told him, which was true. Nothing hurt and there was no indication it would happen again. "I still don't know what really happened. It was almost like I had the passing twice."

He winced, knowing just how painful it was. "Well, do you think it's going to happen again?" He asked me, for all we know it could very well happen to him again as well.

"I... I don't know." I replied. We started our walk to school, avoiding the subject all together when we met up with Drake on the way and talked about some of our other friends. It was a bit of relief to be honest; I sort of forgot what it was like to be normal. If I could be normal again.

I made my way up the stairs into the school where Liam and I left Drake and went to our first class. Besides the friendly wave or someone asking me why I wasn't at school for the past few days.

For the first time, I felt... different. Almost like I was separated from the others, that if someone looked at the crowd of kids their eyes would automatically light up on me. I knew it wasn't true, but I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was onto Liam and I.

Nothing was even wrong with me yet, if anything I bet Liam felt the same way or worse. But I wasn't out of the clear yet; anything could happen, if it hasn't already.

The bell rang, distracting me from my thoughts. I sat there blankly, ignoring the daily announcements and the teachers lame attempts at making everyone quiet down. First class was a blur. Well, most of the day was, besides talking with friends at lunch, and doing work in class, nothing really happened.

I don't know why, but I just felt like something was going on, like someone was on to me and Liam. And I didn't know how to shake that feeling.

Six hours later the final bell rang, the sharp ring signalling the end of the school day. I got up grabbing my half empty bag, and walked out the door in a daze. Following the crowd like I was a scuba diver following a school of fish.

In an attempt to find Liam I pulled out my old phone and tried to call him, but the dumb thing was already out of battery. I had tried to convince my parents to get me a new one, but apparently they thought I could still manage with a phone made in 2011

It was't like it was ancient, but the battery was damaged so I could hardly make it through a single day without it dying. I hadn't even used it much, it just drained throughout the day and was a royal pain.

I sighed, and went to find him the old fashion way, where I would have to use my legs. I hated the old fashion way.

I walked down the main hall hoping to catch him leaving a class or talking with some other friends, not seeing him anywhere, I went to the cafeteria to try there. I swept my hand against the lockers rhythmically until I got there. I expected to find him there, buying a cookie like he always did before they closed after school, but once again he wasn't there.

I turn to go to the gallery, the one other spot I would check before I gave up looking for him, when I heard the sound of someone yelling.

I look at the cafeteria entrance, where there were doors to the outside, and right outside in the parking lot stood Edmund. The shy kid was getting yelled at by a parent, probably his own.

I get closer to the door so I can hear what was going on. I put my ear against the door but couldn't hear anything still. And I didn't want to get caught peeking or eavesdropping, so I decided to leave it. I took one last look outside at Edmund, and the only way I could describe his face was murderous. His face was red, his lips were tight and his brow was furrowed, but the part that scared me were his eyes.

His eyes were dark, like the white of his eyes had disappeared, wether it was the shadows or a trick on my eyes I had no clue. But Edmund was angry, the kind where you don't stand there fuming, thinking about how you want to hit that person.

The kind of angry where you take action.

I'd like to say I followed him home, watched him from afar and learned of what he planned to do, so I could stop him miraculously and become the hero I always knew I'd be. But no, I decided to go to the convenience store and buy potato chips. I knew I had made the wrong choice when I found out that they were all out of salt and vinegar.

"Are you actually kidding me," I complained to Liam, who was browsing the candy section. He had a sweet tooth and took any opportunity to stuff his face with the stuff. I was much the same with chips.

As you can tell we have a very healthy lifestyle.

He grabbed a bag of Sour Cherry Blasters and walked up to the counter to pay, I reluctantly grabbed some gummy bears and made my way to the counter, stopping next to him and pulling out my cash.

The cashier wasn't paying attention at all, he sat there on his phone, scrolling through some app and replying to his friends. He finally noticed us after a minute and checked out our delicious snacks and we were on our way.

I chewed on my gummy bears and Liam ate his cherry blasters as we walked towards his house for supplies, our plan for the moment was to go back to the underground parking lot and make our fort. God this was going to be great.

"What do you think we'll need?" I asked him when we were nearly there, I could see his road from here.

He scratched his chin and thought for a second, "I'm thinking some sleeping bags, pillows, maybe a tent or something? If were going to be spending a lot of time down there we're gonna want to make it comfortable.

"Do you have really strong lamps or flashlights at your house? We could set those up around the sinkhole and general area to light it up, I don't really want to accidentally trip into it and nearly die." I asked him, thinking of the possibilities.

"Yeah I have something like that, I got it covered. What about food? I'd like some down there just in case, you never know what might happen."

I agreed, and as soon as we got there I raided his kitchen. I packed the necessaries, making sure they wouldn't notice much was gone. The last thing I needed was Liam's family thinking a large raccoon that was smart enough to open fridge doors was on the loose.

I waited at the door for him as he gathered the other things, wondering how we were going to get a water source down there. Maybe there were old pipes? Unlikely, but a possibility. Maybe I could bring a bucket; but that would only last so long.

I pondered the thought as I waited for Liam to come back, he did shortly; hardly managing to carry everything in his arms. I quickly ran forward to help him with the load and then we were off, back towards the abandoned construction site to make a fort.

God we were the coolest kids in school.

When we got there, Liam very kindly showed me the stairs that he somehow forgot to mention as I risked my life. I stared daggers at him and he pretended not to notice. For all I knew he found it hilarious.

"Where do you want to set up?" I asked, wondering it for myself. The corner would be a good spot because we could lean against the walls and wouldn't need to light up the space all around us. He shortly came to the same conclusion and we went to the far right corner, opposite from the sink hole and not too far from the stairwell.

I pulled out my sleeping bag and it down on top of the mattress Liam had dropped. He had some lamps that ran on rechargeable batteries, and he was setting them up in a strategic fashion to light up as much space as possible.

I put the bag with the non perishable foods in the corner, I hoped nothing would get into any of it while we weren't here, that would be a shame if we had to keep replenishing it. I covered it with a blanket for just in case and walked over to Liam on the far side of the parking lot.

He was setting up lights, that way neither of us would trip into the hole by accident and die; which neither of us really wanted to do.

I walked up and pushed him forwards, then quickly pulled him back to scare him. He gave a small yelp as soon as he stumbled towards the gaping hole, until I pulled away. He tripped and fell, his hand on his heart.

"Saved your life." I said.

"Don't do that dude, holy crap I thought I was going to die." He complained, his heart no doubt pounding.

"Good thing I was there to catch you, eh?" I said in reply, grinning at him. I reached forward and grabbed his hand; helping him back up to his feet.

We both look into the hole, it was still dark but with the small spotlights set up around it, it seemed to almost make it seem shallow. I knew it was a false sensation, most likely it was deep enough to break a leg... or even die.

I looked down into the pit while Liam fiddled with one of the lights that kept falling over, the light shined into the hole and I could finally see what was in there for the first few feet.

The walls of the sinkhole were made of dirt, with rocket wedged into it like raisins in a muffin. I looked at it for a few seconds, nothing really out of the ordinary, it was basically what I expected to see underground if someone made a big hole.

Liam fixed the light and turned around to face the surrounding area, and I quickly lost vision of what was there. I stared at the darkness for a second, I felt like I had seen something, but didn't get a good enough look to be sure.

I turn to Liam, "hey do you have that flashlight on you?" I asked him.

"Uh yeah, sure it's right here." He reached into his pants pocket to pull out his small flashlight, he turned it on and handed it to me.

I took it and flashed it into the hole, surveying the ground once more to see if what I saw was true.

Some of the rocks were wet.

It could of just been some condensation or it had rained, because I was no scientist; but when there was water, there was a source. And considering I had a freaking water bender at my side...

I got an idea.

I quickly grabbed Liam's shoulders and shook him unnecessarily, "can you sort of feel if theres water, like can you tell if theres water without looking at it?" I asked him out of the blue, it would be a long shot, but it just might work.

"I-I don't know I haven't tried." He said, not sure what I was getting at.

"I think there might be pipes underneath the pavement, someone might have set them up there before the hole happened. If you can sense it we could have our own water source." I explained, hoping I wouldn't have to explain it a second time, it was so annoying when people ignored you when you have something important to say.

He paused, as if thinking wether my idea was stupid, and was considering to either roast me or be supportive about my idiotic ideas. I realized he was concentrating, he closed his eyes tight and held a calm expression. He stayed like that for at least thirty seconds as I stood there watching.

Suddenly his eyes flew open, he was grinning. He walked over to a spot between the stairs and our fort and pointed at the ground. "Here, theres water right under this."

I smiled, this was perfect, now we wouldn't have to bring a bucket overtime we came over here. I turn to Liam, with one more question on my mind, "So Liam, you got any tools?"
