Chapter 14: The Time
So far, a few dates had passed. Possibly about 3 so far, but neither of them had taken this as a true hint it was time to confess...until one day.
"And then you just open your hand..." Red Son instructed, putting Mei's arm and hand in position.
Mei nodded and opened her hand, and that's when a green flame ignited in her palm. "WHOA!"
Red Son cheered. "HAHA! It actually worked! I knew it would! You're a dragon after all!"
Mei smirked, dispersing the flame and scratching her chin. "Heck yeah I am! Thanks, Red!"
"I figured you could use some fire training sometime. You can't always rely on that sword." Red Son said, grabbing the Dragon Blade. "It's a mighty weapon, one of the most powerful weapons in all of history...but you can't become dependent upon it. You have to learn to fight without it."
Mei nodded. "Yeah?"
"Mhm." Red Son said, gently swinging the blade around, looking at his own reflection through the jade metal of the Dragon Blade. "A sword is an extension of your arm in a way, but you have to know how to use your actual arm just as well as the blade."
Mei smirked a bit. "Wow, Red. I didn't think you knew so much about swords!"
Red Son laughed, putting the Dragon Blade back. "I don't. Weapons in general? Yes. I would always use a spear when I was younger, now I just rely on my fire." He said, igniting his fist in fire for a few seconds.
Mei blushed a bit. "Y-You're good at it."
Red Son's cheeks turned as red as his hair and he cleared his throat a bit. "T-Thank you." He said before looking at her. She almost had this angelic green glow to her.
He recalled his father telling him the story of how he met his mother when he was younger. He always said there was this glow to her whenever he looked at her...looks like he wasn't wrong.
Red Son took a deep breath. The Noodle Boy said to just do whatever felt right to him...and right now, he wanted to tell her more than ever. He looked at himself for a moment before stepping forward. "M-Mei...?"
Mei turned. "Yeah, Red?"
"...can I...tell you something that's been on my mind?" Red Son asked, walking a little closer to Mei. "I...It has to do with those dates and...t-that kiss..."
Mei's eyes widened and her face went red, immediately figuring out what he was going to tell her. But she somewhat feared she wouldn't get her feelings returned.
Red Son's hair lightly sparked and even a few small flames burned softly. "I...over all this time, I've found myself caring more and more for you. First, we were enemies. Then, you became my mentor. Then, friends. And n-now...now, I...I think I..."
He couldn't find his own words anymore, his vocal cords felt tied together, just not literally. He tried to speak again, but he could only make out the words 'I' or 'Well' without any other words following after that to make a sentence.
Mei stepped a little closer, suddenly holding both his hands. "R...Red...? Are...you trying to say you...you know...like me?"
Red Son felt a dreadful silence as he tried to force himself to speak, but no words came out. He nodded, almost too quickly.
Mei's eyes widened and she was left silent...before she suddenly dove in, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck and kissing him.
Red Son's glasses fell off in the process and the world stood still for just a moment. He was left shocked and frozen like ice. But ice melted with fire, and he slowly wrapped his arms around her waist, kissing back and feeling a gigantic weight being lifted off of his shoulders.
He held her close, feeling at peace. The sparks and fire disappeared completely, showing he was calm and just in the moment. Mei felt herself calm down as well, even smiling as she fell into his arms.
It lasted for a while before they pulled away, with Mei smiling wide. She laughed. "G-Guess I should've taken the hint earlier, huh?"
Red Son blushed, but laughed. "I suppose we both should have. Love has made us dumb."
"Eh, it's okay to be stupid sometimes." Mei giggled before she kissed him again, with the demon quickly returning it.
