The Fire: Part 3

Jesse could only watch as her the view of her home slowly disappeared, her head feeling like a weight and looking back down at the ground. She could feel blood leaking through one of her loosened bandages, the wound having re-opened and making her groan in pain.

She let the chipped people move her, too weak to struggle anymore. Suddenly, a hand grabbed hers, and she turned, surprised.

Aiden.

Words got caught in her throat as he looked at her with pleading eyes, blood covering his body like a blanket. She could feel tears run down her cheeks as she shook her head.

"Aiden-I'm sorry-" she said, voice cracking as her voice trailed off. She gripped his hand a bit tighter, ignoring his blood still on it. "I thought this was over-I didn't-I can't-"

"Hey," he said, stopping her. His voice was raspy and there was a trail of blood coming out of his mouth. "It's not-it's not your fault-okay? Don't blame yourself."

He chuckled a bit and leaned his head back, the chipped people carrying them at the same pace. His hand was still entwined in hers.

"I'm just-sorry-I couldn't-" Aiden began to cough wildly, as more tears spilled out of her eyes, knowing she could do nothing. "-fulfill that-promise."

He looked at her, one last time, before his hand fell limp in hers, his eyes becoming dull and lifeless. His body slumped, his chest stopped moving, and Jesse could feel her heart beat faster.

No, no, no-

She gripped his hand tight, wishing for some sort of movement, but nothing happened. All she could remember before her eyelids closed, was that he was so very cold.

****************************

Jesse didn't know when, or how much time had passed. All she remembered was a repeating nightmare, the cold metal of chains pressed against her skin, and the floor feeling rough like pebbles.

She felt engulfed in pain, not just on the outside, but on the inside as well. The cuts and bruises couldn't compare to the hole in her heart, the knot in her chest, the doubt in her mind...the guilt, the heavy weight on her shoulders.

It's my fault.

It's not your fault, okay? Don't blame yourself.

How can I not blame myself when it all this happened because of me?

This would have never have happened if she had just made sure. If she'd just made sure that PAMA was truly gone. If she had just checked...

She knew she shouldn't blame herself, but it was incredibly hard for someone like her, someone who always took the blame for everything.

But now, it seemed as if PAMA had won. Taken over. No, she couldn't think like that...right?

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, and she immediately wished she had stayed asleep. A burning pain stabbed her side and arm, along with her leg, and her head. She grabbed her head with both hands, bringing the heavy chains up with them.

After massaging her head with no success of easing the pain, she began to look around and observe her surroundings. She was in a large, what was most likely underground, area, with several floors mostly made of glass. It was all red, black, or gray, and screens were placed mostly everywhere.

With a jolt she felt realization hit her.

This was almost an exact replica of PAMA's lair back in Crown Mesa, except more dark, and plenty more screens than necessary. A shiver ran up her spine as memories flowed back.

She shook her head and shut her eyes tightly.

Oh Notch, no, she thought, trying to wash away the flashes of previous events.

Beep beep beep

Jesse opened her eyes, looking for the source of the sound. A screen glowed red, and then another, until each and every screen powered on, a little circle in the middle, spinning. It lit up the entire lair.

She stared at the screen to a little ways to her left, the closest one towards her.

Beep

With the last and final beep, each of the screens turned into a face. A face she hoped to never see again. She gritted her teeth and growled, staring intently at the screen.

Two vertical lines as the eyes, and one curved horizontal one for the mouth.

"Welcome Jesse." PAMA exclaimed, certainly looking very happy. "Welcome to your doom."
