Bitter Work
Lillian sat in her lotus position beside Iroh. Her mind was clear and calm with each breath she took. The incense she had lit beside her filled the air around her and Iroh. Zuko sat on the other side of Lillian watching his uncle's pained expressions, "Lu Ten" Iroh's voice mumbled as a small smile appeared on his face. Lillian's eyes fluttered open and rested on Iroh as he began to wake up, "Uncle?" Lillian and Zuko spoke together. Lillian watched Zuko's face as a small smiled appeared, "You were unconscious. Azula did this to you." Zuko said as he helped Iroh sit up, "It was a surprise attack." Lillian added. Iroh winces in pain and holds his bandaged shoulder, "Somehow, that's not so surprising." Zuko shuffled around as he gathered three cups and poured some tea, "I hope I made it the way you like it." Zuko said as he handed Iroh and Lillian tea, "From when do you make tea?" Lillian asked with a raised brow. Iroh took a large sip of his tea but before he could swallow his face fell with disgust. Lillian placed her hand over her mouth as she tried to conceal her giggle, "Mmm, Good..." Iroh gagged. Lillian's smile disappeared when Zuko stared at her hopefully. Lillian looked down at her tea and saw that the green liquid was actually brown. Lillian swallowed the whole cup and tried her hardest not to gag, "T-thanks Zuko... That's ugh...great." Lillian said as she felt her face turn green. Zuko took Iroh's cup and refilled it as he reached his hand out for Lillian's cup she gave him an innocent smile, "I wouldn't want to finish Uncle's delicious tea." Lillian said. Iroh's eyes widened at Lillian's statement and caused him to stare at her, "Drink up Uncle!" Lillian cheered as she patted his back. Zuko took his own cup and began drinking with no emotion, "So uncle, I've been thinking. It's only a matter of time before I run into Azula again. I'm going to need to know more advanced firebending if I want to stand a chance against her. I know what you're going to say: she's my sister and I should be trying to get along with her. " Zuko said seriously. Iroh sat up, "No, she's crazy and she needs to go down. It's time to resume your training. " Iroh said to Zuko. Lillian crossed her arms over her chest, "His training can resume in two days. You are in no condition to train anyone Uncle." Lillian said in a matter of fact tone. Iroh's face became mischievous, "You are absolutely correct my dear. That's why you will be training him!" Iroh said with a grin. Zuko choked on his tea,
"She's what?" ,"I'm what?" Lillian and Zuko burst at the same time. Iroh just nodded his head, "I believe that you should teach Prince Zuko about lightning." Iroh said seriously. Lillian rushed up and waved her hands crazily, "I Can't teach him that! I-i mean, no one really taught me! Grandpa Ping showed me once!" Lillian stuttered. Iroh began making a new brew of tea. Zuko raised his brow at Lillian, "Then how do you know how to perform it?" Zuko asked curiously. Lillian began pacing, "Same way I learn many forms... By observing..." Lillian said. Iroh patted the cushion besides him, "Take a seat my dear." Lillian did as she was told, "Now, how would you describe the feeling of lightning and creating it?" Iroh asked proudly waiting for Lillian's answer. Lillian took a deep breath, " Lightning is a greater form of fire. You may not be able to see it but in a way you can feel it. It's a crazy feeling in your stomach like having too many spicy pancakes and your stomach feeling as if it's an erupting volcano. Once you feel that heat then you can form the lightening and then, Zap zap and pew pew!" Lillian explained as she used her fingers to demonstrate.
Iroh had a deadpan expression and Zuko was confused. Lillian felt their eyes on her and placed her hands in her lap as he cheeks turned pink, "Or something like that..." Lillian mumbled. Zuko stared seriously at his uncle, "When do we start Uncle?" Iroh smiled at Lillian, "you two will be starting right now and I will join you for training tomorrow Prince Zuko." Iroh said calmly. Lillian and Zuko stared at each other for a brief moment before both of them stood to leave and go outside.
Lillian and Zuko walked a good distance before Lillian stopped, "Here should be good I guess." Lillian said as she removed her shirt revealing her slightly bandaged chest that was just below her wrap. Zuko's eyes fell on the bandage but before he could process what it was....Lillian had blasted a blue ball of fire at his feet, "Hey! I wasn't ready!" Zuko yelled. Lillian smirked at Zuko, "I'm going to show you something I've been working on. If you can get inside my ring of fire then I will teach you the form." Lillian said as she cracked her fingers. Zuko removed his shirt and stood before Lillian in his sleeveless earth kingdom shirt.
Lillian took a few steps back before she flipped forward onto her hands and began spinning herself around bending strong streams of fire around her body. Zuko took his stance and watched Lillian as she stood in the center of the fire and began swaying her arms around causing the ring of fire to gain "fire arms?" Zuko questioned. Lillian smirked through the flames at Zuko, "Let's get started!" Lillian called out. Without a warning Zuko charged at Lillian using his fire to propel him forward. Lillian swung a fiery arm at him which caused Zuko to lose balance and fall, "Think Zuko! Don't just rush in!" Lillian yelled as she sent an arc of fire at him. Zuko dodged her attack before running around her fiery wall. Lillian's smile was visible through the orange flames, "Stop smirking!" Zuko yelled as he jumped into the air and tried to land inside her ring. Lillian spun in fast circle causing the whole ring to shift as she bent the flames beneath her and moved around, "What the- HEY!" Zuko yelled as he dove out the way from her blast. Zuko stood a safe distance as he watched Lillian's fire octopus, "Pay attention Zuko! You need to get in this ring to defeat me!" Lillian called as she began forming a fire tornado. Zuko noticed that her firey arms rose and fell as if it was breathing. Zuko took a firm stance before creating a long fire whip. Lillian watched carefully as Zuko's whip grew longer and larger with each breath he took. Suddenly Zuko began snapping the whip at her ring of fire causing it to get slightly smaller. Lillian smiled, "Clever move..." Lillian whispered as Zuko kept snapping the whip at her ring. The loud snap caused a large gush of wind each time which caused Lillian's flames to die out. Zuko was doing at such a speed that Lillian wasn't able to recreate the flames, "Oh crap..." Lillian hissed as Zuko snapped his whip one last time and began charging at her. Zuko leaped into the ring before Lillian could raise her arms back up. Zuko smirked at Lillian as she allowed the flames to slowly dissipate, "Not bad Prince Zuko." Lillian said with a taunting bow. Zuko rolled his eyes at Lillian, "How about some sparring?" Zuko suggested. Lillian nodded excitedly, "But first, lets take a breather. That form took a lot out of me." Lillian said as she slumped to floor and laid on her back. Zuko chuckled lightly, "Are you out of practice Lilly?" Zuko asked in a teasing voice. Lillian scoffed at his statement, "Me? Never!" Lillian began to laugh causing Zuko to smile at her.
A few hours had passed when Zuko and Lillian had finally returned to Iroh. Lillian and Zuko stumbled in as they laughed together. Iroh smiled at the two firebenders, "What seems to be so funny?" Iroh asked as Lillian sat beside him, "Oh, Zuko thinks that his tea is way better than mine, so I said that Uncle would be the judge of that." Lillian said with a wink. Zuko smiled at her as she laid back on to her mat, "Man am I beat... Forget food... I need sleep." Lillian said with a yawn. Zuko noticed that his sleeping mat had moved, "Uncle have you seen my-" Zuko stopped talking when he spotted his mat beside Lillian with a smiling Iroh, "Oh... I moved a few things around to make our living space a bit more acceptable." Lillian stared at Iroh, "Yeah... Who was I kidding? You can go train Zuko right now if you like since you don't listen." Lillian mumbled. Zuko walked over to his mat and laid down beside Lillian. Zuko stared at the roof thinking about the last time he truly laid peacefully. Lillian had already fallen asleep and Iroh's soft snores filled the room when Zuko relaxed himself and laid on his side facing Lillian's sleeping face.

Lillian awoke to an empty room. The tea was still warm which means she hasn't over slept for long. Lillian heard a large explosion and rushed out of the house, "Why can't I do it? Instead of lightning, it keeps exploding in my face! Like everything always does!" Zuko yelled in frustration. Iroh greeted Lillian with a smile, "I was afraid this might happen. You will not be able to master lightning until you have dealt with the turmoil inside you." Iroh said as he held his chin. Lillian was about to comfort Zuko when Iroh placed his hand on her arm, "My dear... would you mind, uh, I don't want to be rude but-" Iroh tried to explain, "It's fine uncle, I get it. " Lillian whispered. Uncle walked back towards Zuko and stood before him. Lillian's smile fell away, "I'm gonna go get cleaned up." Lillian whispered.
Lillian walked for about and hour before she found a small stream, "Better than nothing I guess..." Lillian mumbled before filling all their water sacks. Lillian washed some of their clothes and then took a quick bath in the stream. Lillian noticed a few storm clouds in the distance over the mountain tops, "Better get back before I get caught in the storm and they worry about me." Lillian spoke to herself.
Lillian returned to find Zuko gone and Iroh standing at the edge of the canyon nervously, "Uncle?" Lillian spoke before Iroh rushed towards her, "Lillian dear, You have to go find Zuko, before he gets himself killed!" Iroh rushed, "What? Why! what happened?" Lillian panicked. Iroh wiggled his finger's, "I may or may have not taught him the lightning redirection technique." Iroh hummed. Lillian pinched the bridge of her nose, "You what..." Lillian repeated, "He's on the mountain top looking for lightning to strike him!!!" Iroh yelled as he raised his arms. Lillian nodded her head before she ran past Iroh towards the mountain, "Hurry!" Iroh called behind her. Lillian leaped off of the side of the canyon, "Don't let him see you!" Lillian heard Iroh's voice call. Lillian's body became engulfed in her flames as her white wings were released and she flew as fast as she could.
Lillian arrived at the bottom of the mountain in the pouring rain and landed beside Zuko's ostrich horse. Lillian retracted her wings and began climbing the mountain, "I'm sure I saw him busy climbing." Lillian whispered. Lillian felt her skin become numb from the cold, "Zuko!" Lillian called as she kept climbing, "You've always thrown everything you could at me!" Lillian heard Zuko's voice yell, "Well, I can take it! And now I can give it back!" Lillian felt as the hair on her neck and arms began to raise, "Come on! Strike me! You've never held back before!" Zuko yelled. Lillian found Zuko on the face of the mountain on his knees with his face in his hands, "Zuko!" Lillian yelled over a large roar of thunder. Zuko remained still, "Zuko! we need to get out of here! It's not safe!" Lillian screamed. Suddenly a strong electric current filled the air causing Zuko to look up at the sky, "Zuko! stay down!" Lillian yelled. Zuko turned to the sound of Lillian's voice and crawled to her, "Lilly! What are you doing here!" Zuko yelled as he held her head to his chest, "Looking for you!" Lillian yelled, Zuko watched as the storm got worse and lightning was running across the sky, "We need to get back to Uncle!" Lillian yelled. Zuko nodded at Lillian before wrapping his arm around her waist protectively and leading her down the mountain. Lillian stared at the pitch black sky and felt the lightning form, "Wait!" Lillian called as she pushed Zuko behind her, "What are you doing!?" Zuko yelled. Lillian's face stared right above them before shoving Zuko to the ground and catching the largest bolt of lightning she has ever held, " LILLIAN!" Zuko yelled as Lillian's piercing scream filled the air. There was a flash of great light before Lillian redirected the lightning towards the mountain across from them. Zuko stared at Lillian in shock. Her shirt was singed completely off leaving only her warrior wrap. Lillian held her left rib as she fell to her knees, "Bad idea..." Lillian growled. Zuko stood still behind Lillian as he stared at the scars below Lillian's shoulder blades, "Lillian! Your scars!" Zuko cried. Lillian stood slowly and faced Zuko, "What about them?" Lillian asked worriedly, " T-they were glowing! Why were they Glowing???" Zuko asked frightened. Lillian stared at Zuko for a moment before he took her by her waist again, "Zuko I-" Lillian started but crouched forward in pain and placed her hand on her left rib, "Lillian?" Zuko asked as the thunder roared. Lillian removed her hand and noticed a scarlet liquid on her hand, "Uh oh." Lillian mumbled, " Lilly! You Idiot!" Zuko yelled as his eyes fell on her blood stained hand, "Don't worry! Let's get down from here first." Lillian smiled as she leaned into Zuko's side. Zuko nodded before lifting Lillian bridal style and carrying her down the mountain, "I can walk you know!" Lillian said in Zuko's ear. Lillian watched Zuko's face as it filled with anger, "I know." was all Zuko said until they reached the base of the mountain.
Zuko placed Lillian down against the mountain before lifting her wrap to inspect her injury. Lillian watched Zuko carefully as he removed a small pouch from the saddle and took out a small bandage with a cloth, "The lightning seemed to have reopen your old burn." Zuko said as he began bandaging Lillian's side, "I'm fine Zuko- ahh!" Lillian hissed in pain, "There." Zuko said as he tightened the bandage. Zuko lifted Lillian onto the ostrich horse, "Are you angry?" Lillian asked as Zuko stood beside her, "You could have died Lillian!" Zuko burst out, "but I didn't." Lillian replied. Zuko climbed on behind her, "You almost did..." Zuko whispered, "Zuko, I redirect lightning a lot, that was nothing." Lillian said with a smile, Zuko pulled back on the reins, "And if I wasn't on this mountain then you wouldn't have needed to." Zuko said quietly. Lillian watched as Zuko's knuckles turned white over the reins. Lillian placed her hands over Zuko's and leaned back into his chest resting her head on his shoulder, "I'll always be there to help you. No matter what. And I'd do everything all over again." Lillian whispered into Zuko's ear, Zuko gave Lillian a light kiss on the crown of her head before flicking the reins.
Lillian felt confused about her future destiny regarding her duties to the Avatar and the sky temple, but she knew one thing... She wasn't confused about her feelings for Zuko and she knew that she would have to tell him sooner or later.... But for now, she'll keep him and herself happy
