Chapter 8

I watched as Martin held his painting up to show Professor Mueller. They had their backs to me so I couldn't catch a glimpse of the art. "Now you're sure this will work exactly like the real thing?" Professor Mueller asked. Martin bounced up and down on the balls of his feet. "Why should I tell you?" he said smiling to show his crooked yellow teeth. "Because if you do," Professor Mueller hissed. "I will give you half of the money I get when I get my hands on Sebastian Gunderman's art." Martin laughed insanely and nodded. Professor Mueller moved over to a window to the right of me. He held the painting up to the glass pane so the moonlight shone on it. I could see a little bit of the art. It was a very detailed painting of a candle that had the name "Houdini Gunderman" vertical. I remembered from looking up Sebastian Gunderman that the cat the is supposedly haunting his art is his cat, Houdini. His cat had a knack for escaping the toughest, smallest spaces just like the magician. "I summon thee, Houdini Gunderman," Professor Mueller said. Martin jumped up and down, clapping joyfully. It was silent. I had expected there to be booming and roaring, but it was quiet. Martin and Professor Mueller stood there for thirty seconds until Mueller grew furious. "I thought you said it would work!" he fumed. Martin giggled nervously. "No, no, no never said that. Martin only nodded," Greenbranch said smiling cruelly. "I had assumed that meant it would work," Professor Mueller said through gritted teeth. "No, no, no," Martin said again. "I only agreed that if I told you I would get half of the money." As they bickered back and forth, I heard a racing of feet. I slowly turned around to see the cat creature bounding towards me. I quickly moved out of the way and it burst through the door. I heard Martin's high-pitched scream and I couldn't help but giggle. professor Mueller had moved out of the way and was now gaping at the cat's matted fur and glowing red eye sockets. He paused for a moment, taking everything in and then held up the painting. The cat immediately sat and stared calmly at the candle. "Houdini Gunderman, I command you to kidnap Rebecca House," Mueller said. The cat bowed and walked to the door I was standing by. I had no where to hide and the could walk any way. They were sure to see me if I ran for it, so I just crouched down and hoped for the best. Unluckily the cat went right where I was sitting. When Mueller saw me he did a double-take and then curled his lips into a revolting sneer. "Well, if it isn't Laura Peck, the grand detective," Professor Mueller said."How did you know I was detective?" I asked narrowing my eyes. Mueller waved his hand through the air delicately. "You don't think that the teachers voted on having a detective around her?" Mueller chuckled. "I of course voted no, but then, a young girl, barely an adult, shows up and I can't but help laugh at how she is here to stop me but doesn't know that her being here, is actually going to help me. I must say though, I am impressed that you made it this far." "And what makes you think that I won't just call the police," I said coolly. "Because I will command this cat to kidnap you and stick you in the tunnels underground with Zoe and that other hopeless girl, wandering around, wondering if you'll ever make it out alive," he answered. I knew I had to make a run for it. If I go unexpectedly I might get a few seconds head start. I shot up and streaked into the only place that was open - Professor Mueller's classroom. The compartment where Martin had come through was slightly open, but the book with the scroll in it was right next to it. I had only enough time to grab one before the cat monster got me. I heard professor Mueller summoning it. I had only a few seconds. I couldn't make a decision in time and the cat creature knocked me over. I slid on the ground close enough to the book to grab the scroll out. The cat took me into it's huge claws and took me down the trapdoor. He walked like a human down the mossy steps. I looked behind me. Martin and Professor Mueller were following us quietly. Luckily I still had my backpack with the two other scrolls and my flashlight. I slipped the book with the scroll into my bag. The steps led to a badly crafted door. The cat swung it open with a swift movement of its left hind leg. We walked through and ended up in a circular room. Eight doors lined the walls, all with a different symbol on it. The cat ditched me in the center of the room and stood in the corner. "You can always go back through that door," Mueller said pointing to the door. "But I'm about to tell the cat to kill anyone who goes through it besides me and Martin of course." "What's behind all these doors?" I asked. "Millions of tunnels that lead underground. Once you go through one of those doors, all of Chicago will be walking above you." With an evil laugh he strolled through the door along with Martin and Houdini. I sat in the middle of the room and cried. I was going to die of starvation down her. I took out the scrolls. I opened the one I had not yet looked at. It was a letter. It said: If you are reading this I am dead and my art is worth a fortune. My art is hidden deep underground. If you find the art, please do not be greedy and share the money you receive. The way to my art, you must first find two more scrolls. One is in the hall and one in the library. The crossword is all about me. If you notice, there are eighty-one questions on it, the same amount of boxes on the sudoku. Match answer one on the crossword to the first number, starting at the top of left corner going across, on the sudoku. The candle that controls Houdini is also with my art. Take good care of my cat, whom I have loved very much.Sincerely, Sebastian Gunderman. I looked up. I was going to live.
