Chapter 5

The day after I found Martin's painting in Professor Mueller's room was Friday. We had the weekend to do whatever we wanted. I had Bob take me to Kirk Park to confront Martin.

I walked over to him. He was painting a skeleton horse galloping in a dead pasture. I did a double-take on it.

"Hello Martin," I said.

"Hello dearie," Martin said giggling mischievously.

"Can I ask you a question?" I said.

"Technically you already did, but go ahead and ask another one," Martin said. I rolled my eyes.

"Have you been on Buckthorn campus lately?" I asked.

"I'm not allowed anywhere near that school," Martin said defensively.

"Do you sell your artwork?" I asked.

"What kind of question is that? Of course do, that's how I survive," Martin said bewildered.

"Have you ever sold to a student or teacher from Buckthorn?" I questioned.

"Yes. I have one customer who comes to buy artwork very often. John Bradley," Martin said.

"John buys from you?" I said shocked.

"Why yes. You seem surprised," Martin said.

"I gotta go," I said racing back to Bob. Bob drove me back to the school. I sprinted through the circular door and into the Student Store. John was standing behind the counter like always. When he saw me he smiled and turned towards the door.

"Not so fast," I said slamming the door shut again.

"What?" John asked,

"You buy art from Martin Greenbranch," I said.

"Yeah," John said slowly.

"You ransacked Professor Mueller's bedroom and put up the painting framing Martin," I accused.

"No I didn't. I didn't go near Mueller's bedroom and I never put up a painting," John said.

"So Mueller just happened to have a piece of artwork by Martin Greenbranch? He says he doesn't even buy Martin's work," I said my voice echoing.

"Look I didn't do anything," John said holding up his hands as if I were pointing a gun at him. I looked him hard in the eyes. I could tell he was telling the truth.

"Alright. I believe you," I said backing away.

"What are you anyway?" John asked. "A detective or something?"

"No," I said. "Just trying to find Zoe."

I walked back up to my dorm. I mulled things over. Someone destroyed Professor Mueller's room, and left a painting by Martin Greenbranch. Martin said he wasn't allowed on campus but I don't know that he was telling the truth.

I trudged out to the guards in front of the gate.

"Hello," I said to a burly officer. He grunted.

"I was wondering if anyone bald, with a moustache and thick round glasses has entered the building in the past week?" They guard stiffly shook his head.

"Oh, well thanks for your time," I said disappointed. I strided up the drive. When I opened the door I bumped into Professor Mueller.

"Well hi Laura!" he said smiling.

"Hi," I responded half-heartedly. "Where are you going?"

"Over to Kirk Park to see Martin Greenbranch," Professor Mueller said laughing.

"Oh, well have fun," I said. Professor Mueller strutted down the driveway. My heart leaped. Here was my chance to listen in on what Professor Mueller was saying to Martin Greenbranch. Luckily I always carry around a bug.

I caught up with Mueller and managed to place it on the back of his suit collar where it could not be seen.

I scooted upstairs and into my dorm. I took Zoe's laptop, not having one of my own, and set it up so I could play back everything Professor Mueller says to Martin Greenbranch
