Chapter 24: Gordon Can Sing Soprano

Night sky picture.

Longer chapter to balance out perfect chapter endings. Lol.

"Miss, is everything okay?" The person asked me.

I had my head down and my hoodie covering part of my eye, so the guy on the other side of the desk thingy that was giving us our tickets was probably worried. I nodded.

"Are you sure?"

"She doesn't talk much," Infinity informed harshly. "And she's been through a dramatic experience involving her great aunt Lola so we would all appreciate if you'd stop butting into lives."

The guy's face turned slightly red. He cleared his throat. "My apologies. Here are your tickets." He handed us 5 white tickets. "Have a great day."

"Don't tell us what to do." Infinity grabbed the tickets, and continued down the line.

"Me thinks she's mad bro." Gordon whispered. Jake nodded.

I also noticed that Infinity kept her arms crossed the whole time.

As we went down the line, we stopped at the next person to inspect our inventory bags. I was a little nervous, considering we had stabby objects.

The lady inspected our bags. "It appears you have weapons. No matter. We just have to put these in the baggage hold. Nothing too bad, right?"

"Left." Infinity said.

The lady looked at her, but shook her head and put our bags on a cart behind her along with others.

"Let's go." Jake said behind me.

We started walking along the train, where people were getting inside. I guessed that we had our tickets checked inside.

"Right here." Abby got behind a guy filing inside.

We all got inside. It was a small walkway, but when we got into a room, it had velvety seats for 6. A train window showed a stone wall, which was a nice view.

We sat down, me on the left by the window next to Abby and Gordon, and Jake and Infinity to the right.

"So we just wait?" Abby asked.

"Yep. Train doesn't move till all the rooms are checked for tickets." Jake informed.

So we just waited. It was a bunch of throat clearing and awkward silence, while Infinity just stared into space with the same negative expression.

The door opened, and a young man walked in. "Tickets?" He seemed to be only a few years older than us.

His gaze lingered on me, and I forgot I didn't have my hood up. Crap. I jerked my head toward the window.

I saw Infinity's reflection through the window shoving the tickets toward the man. He inspected them, then handed them back without a word. He glanced toward me again, and left, shutting the door. I looked back.

Infinity sighed and uncrossed her arms. "Finally."

"What?" asked Gordon.

Infinity unzipped her jacket just a little, and reached inside. She pulled out something small and furry. Gabriel?

"Gabriel?" I asked.

She winced. "Yeah. Sorry I was so grumpy. Had to keep up the act."

I raised an eyebrow toward Jake. "And you allowed this?"

He shut his eyes. "Yeah. I knew she would never give him up."

"We could get in trouble." Abby warned.

"I'll risk it." Infinity pet Gabriel.

Gordon grinned. "Sounds awesome."

I grinned, too. "I love you guys."

Gordon put his hand on his heart. "I appreciate it, but I'm in a committed relationship."

Abby gave him a look. "With who?"

He put his arm around her shoulder. "Like you don't know."

Abby turned to me with a desperate look. "Wanna switch?"

"I can't interrupt this beautiful moment." I shook my head.

Everyone laughed except Abby.

I couldn't sleep. I was restless. I was was an insomniac. You get the idea. I just couldn't wait for tomorrow. The time changed a bit, so we were arriving early tomorrow, a little before sunrise. I couldn't wait.

I was just gazing at the night sky, out the window, while the others were sleeping. The sky was so beautiful, with different shades of blue, and all different sizes of beautiful stars. It felt so... magical.

"You're awake?"

I almost jumped at the sound. Jake has awoken from his slumber. Haha, that sounded funny.

"Yes." I whispered. "Shh." I pointed to the sleeping forms.

Jake waved it away. "They're heavy sleepers." Nevertheless, he still kept a low voice. "So, are you nervous?"

I raised an eyebrow. "About tomorrow? Of course not."

"Excited?"

I smiled. "Very. I'm not sure, but I got a good feeling."

Jake said nothing.

"Why are we going there?" I asked.

"To tell them about the attack. About the mutant monsters. And about... you."

"So I can finally get to know something about me." I closed my eyes. "Awesome."

"Kat." Jake said. "I know it's complicated. You're so close to the truth. Everyone knows something about you. And you don't know anything. But it's because we're nervous."

"Why?" I leaned forward.

"Sh."

"Sorry." I winced. I forgot to whisper. "Why? Am I that scary?"

He shook his head. "No. It's just that we aren't sure what to make of you. Well, that sounded harsh."

"Little bit."

This time, he winced. "Sorry. It's just... you're different Kat. Just remember that." He shifted and closed his eyes. "Goodnight."

"Night." I sighed and closed my eyes.

I woke up. Sadly, it was abruptly.

The train had stopped. Like, a jerky stop. One that made the train screech and that made me fall into Jake, Gordon fall into Infinity, and Gabriel yelp. Someone screamed a high pitch.

"Sorry." My voice sounded muffled through Jake's jacket. I pushed myself away from him, and saw that his face was just barely red.

"It's okay." Jake cleared his throat. "Everyone okay?"

"Halp! Woman down!" Infinity said under Gordon. Then, she elbowed him on the stomach and shoved him into the seat across.

"Who screamed?" Abby rubbed her head.

"That was me." Gordon groaned. He raised a hand, another one clutching his stomach. "Did I ever tell you guys that I can sing soprano?"

"Oops." Infinity shrugged.

"What happened?" I asked. Then, I heard something.

"Footsteps! Hide Gabriel!" I whisper shouted.

"Hide you!" Abby shoved my hood up and down again. I grumbled and fixed it.

Infinity zipped up Gabriel just as the door opened. It was the same young man from before.

"Is anyone injured?" He asked, rushed.

Gordon took a deep breath. "I'll walk it off."

The man's eyes swept over everyone. Lingered on me, then spoke. "The train had a technical difficulty. We apologize. The train will continue to move shortly." He left abruptly to tell other passengers.

"Well that just happened." I noted.

"Really?" Abby asked sarcastically.

"Really really."

"I wonder what happened." Gordon said, rubbing his stomach.

"Should we ask?" Infinity asked. "I don't know if I should let Gabe out yet."

"I'll go ask." Jake got up. He just got out the door when he stopped. The man must've still been there. "Hey, um, do you know what happened?"

I couldn't see the dude, but I could hear him. "I don't know exactly. No one told me anything, but to check up on people."

"Okay." Jake walked into the room, and called over his shoulder. "Thanks anyways!" He shut the door, and sat down. "I don't like that guy."

"Why?" I asked.

"Just the way he looks at you."

"...Why?" I gave him a look. "Everyone looks at me weird when they see me."

"Still." Jake grumbled.

"Are you jelly?" Gordon grinned.

"That is irregular and completely incompetent and naive." Jake said emotionless. "I highly doubt he has amorousness for our compatriot here."

I widened my eyes. "English?"

"He thinks it's stupid that the guy would like you." Abby translated.

"Woooooowwww." I said really loud and obnoxious. "I see how it is."

"I didn't contemplate that you would comprehend it that way." Jake said.

"Why are you using big words. That only makes it worse."

The train jerked forward, starting again. Infinity sighed and took Gabriel out. He turned in a circle and laid down next to her in a ball, looking like he was trying to eat his own tail.

"I still don't get how you hid him so easily." Gordon shook his head at her.

"Skills." Infinity closed her eyes and tilted her head up.

So we spent a little bit just talking, chatting, and al that jazz. I found out that Infinity was 14 years old, Jake was 17, Abby was 16, Gordon was 16, and I was 16. Sad that I didn't know my own age. And weird but cool that Infinity was younger, but still a part of the group. And weird because I never thought about Jake being a year older than me.

"So you have to respect your elders." Jake smiled brightly.

"Yeah right, gramps." I rolled my eyes.

And then we just talked about things that we were good and bad at, our favorite jukebox music, and mobs.

"I'm telling you, the creeper is the best mob!" Gordon argued. "They can survive day, water, and sneak attack you from wherever."

"But spider-jockeys were so annoying." Abby countered.

"Spider-jockeys?" I asked.

"Skeletons riding spiders." Abby informed. "Endangered now. But they had melee and ranged attack combined!"

"Yet their numbers were broken down." Gordon said. "And creepers are still thriving."

"What about the endermen?" I asked.

"What about them?"

"Well, they can teleport, move blocks, and are pretty strong."

"But they can't be in water. And they hate you if you look at them."

"Well, maybe the water damage is just balance for their opness. And I dunno, maybe they're sensitive."

"Guys."

Unlike whenever I try, Jake's voice rang out. We all looked at him. He was staring out the window.

"We're here."
