Chapter Twenty-Two: Bad News

Thomas's P.O.V.
I barely slept the nights that the kids were away. I could feel Patton and Logan's anticipation, the kids and the Lambargni's worrying. With every second I could feel that we were getting closer to something—but what we were closer to, I wasn't sure.

The morning after they left, while I was eating breakfast, Logan appeared in front of me holding a piece of paper. At first glance, he looked a little panicked, but after a moment he looked more confused.

"Thomas, I have some upsetting news," he began, looking down at the paper in his hand. "This letter was given to everyone in the kingdom and to us Sides. 'Dear reader: the royal wedding of Prince Roman Creativity Sanders and Virgil Anxiety Sanders has been officially scheduled for Monday, April first. The ceremony will begin at 12 pm sharp in the royal ballroom, and you are advised to be present at least ten minutes before said time. All attire is exceptional, due to the short notice. Sincerely, Jeremy Snieghter, wedding planner.'"

"April first," I questioned. "That's two days from now! Have you heard anything else?"

"The Sides and you will be the groomsmen," Logan answered. "I can't believe those two believe they can pull this off. They're not even holding a rehearsal, let alone explaining why they've only given two days notice. One would think that a disguise so crucial to the mission the imposter's on would be properly thought out, and yet, no. The imposter seems a bit idiotic to me. Perhaps I could use this to our advantage..."

A thoughtful and somewhat mischievous expression crossed Logan's face and a certain hopeful gleam returned to his eyes. Without saying anything else, he sank back down into the Mind, leaving me to wonder what he planned to do.

Patton's P.O.V.
The nights the kids were gone, I got just about as much sleep as Thomas. But it wasn't all bad, because Logan stayed up with me. Early Saturday morning, after only three or so hours of sleep, Logan and I went downstairs to eat breakfast. Since we were the only two people in the Mind Palace that morning, we decided on just eating cereal.

"There are two notes," Logan said as he grabbed the bowls and spoons. I sat the milk carton and the cereal box down on the counter and went to see what Logan was talking about. Sure enough, next to the usual 'I've gone to the kingdom' note, there was a second one. It looked like some fancy card stock invitation. I read it—it was about the royal wedding.

"Makes sense that they chose to have it on April first," I said, trying to find some humor in this bad situation. "The whole thing's a fake." Logan grinned and pulled out his phone. His grin quickly faded as he started typing.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"I'm telling the kids," he answered. He finished typing and put his phone back in his pocket, then continued getting the bowls and spoons for breakfast. We fixed our bowls and went to eat on the couch.

"Is that all we're gonna say about this?" I asked between bites.

"What more have we to say?" Logan responded. "What happens now is no longer ours to decide. The control is in the hands of the kids and the Lambargnis."

"I know, but, isn't there anything else we can do?"

"I'm afraid not." I sighed and sat down my bowl, wishing there was some other way we could help. But, for the moment, it seemed I'd have to find something else to do.

"Hey," I began. "Did you really mean it when you said you'd.. you'd die for me? Or were you just saying that for the sake of the conversation?" Logan paused for a moment, then sat his bowl down and pulled me into a hug.

"Of course I meant it," he said, his voice low and sincere. "I would do so both as repayment for you saving my life and for making my life extraordinary."

"I make your life extraordinary?" I questioned happily.

"Love, you make every day, every moment that I am in your presence, extraordinary." It took everything I had not to noticeably swoon.

"What have I done to deserve even a single second with you?" Logan sighed as I leaned against him.

"I was just thinking the same thing about you," I replied.

"Patton!" Logan yelled, startling me so bad that I fell off the couch. He had just gotten back from talking to Thomas, and while he was gone I was reading a random book that was sitting on the coffee table.

"Oh, apologies, love," he apologized as he helped me up. "I didn't mean to frighten you, but I've had an idea. Remember how you were wondering if there was anything else we could do?" I nodded. "Well, I believe I've thought of something we could do."

He wanted to interrogate the imposter. He wanted to get Virgil out of the picture for some time and use my interrogation room to get some answers out of the imposter.

"You're kidding, right?" I stammered.

"Of course not," Logan answered. "Why would I be?"

"Logan, don't you realize how dangerous that could be? What if he hurts you? What if he does something to you like he did to Virgil?"

"I'm willing to accept the possibility of danger in the pursuit of knowledge, let alone knowledge that could be crucial to Roman's rescue."

"You may be willing to accept that danger, but not everyone else is. Thomas' creativity is pretty dull, and so is his anxiety. If something happens to his logic, he might stop functioning properly. Thomas needs you, Logan. I need you." Logan sighed and pulled me into a hug.

"Nothing will happen to me," he whispered in my ear. "Neither Thomas nor you will lose me."

"Do you promise?" Logan sighed again and stepped back to stand face to face.

"I'm afraid not. I don't want to make a promise to you that I may not be able to keep."

At that moment, I wanted to argue with Logan. I wanted to tell him that he had just told me there was nothing we could do, so why should we suddenly change that? The kids and the Lambargnis were already out looking for Roman and there was nothing we could do for Virgil that wouldn't get him killed, so why were we suddenly changing plans and doing something about the imposter?

But I knew he was right. Our questions weren't going to answer themselves. If something didn't happen now, it may be too late to do anything else.

A.N.
Hola everyone, I hope you are all doing well and are excited to see what comes next in this story. I'm publishing a day early because I'll be busy tomorrow. Some of you may be wondering what the results are for the Hogwarts house vote I started a few days ago, which is what I'm going to talk about now.

I will not be announcing the results for the vote (unless, of course, a good bit of you ask to see the results), as I decided that the future event I have planned will be written with my houses of choice. But don't feel like I don't value the opinions you shared. Your opinions will be taken into sincere consideration when I write the event in which they will be needed. On top of that, two of the elected houses are the same as what I've chosen to use.

Anyway, thanks for voting and thanks for reading. Adiós, guys, gals, and non-binary pals.
