Chapter Twenty-Six: Objection

Trigger warning: depictions of blood, fighting.

Milly's P.O.V.
We ran as fast as possible to the kingdom and found ourselves outside the glass doors at the top of the grand staircase.

"Tori," I whispered to her in the hallway just a few feet from the doors. "Watch over Lori and Roman." She nodded and continued to cradle her sister.

"Guys," Camille whispered. "If we're gonna stop this wedding, we need to get Virgil to fall out of love with the imposter. To do that, get him to see Roman, get him to see the necklace. That should trigger his memories."

As she finished, I heard the wedding officiant say, "before we continue with this union," and knew that next he would ask for objections. I told Camille, Owen, and Anthony that we should throw the doors open and object, and so, when the famous line came around, we kicked the doors open and yelled in unison, "WE OBJECT!"

"You dare—" the imposter growled. "First you don't show up, then you barge in and disrupt the ceremony! What next?"

"This," I said, Anthony and I pulling our swords out and holding them to the imposter.

"Thomas, go, say something to them," Camille said to Thomas, gesturing towards the crowd of shocked faces. For a short moment of silence, as everyone waited quietly to hear what Thomas would say, I looked around. Patton (in a lacy, pale blue, halter dress) and Logan (in a navy blue suit) were side by side, hands held tightly. Virgil (in an all-white suit, which I knew he must have hated) was staring at us with a horrified expression and holding on tightly to the imposter's hand. The wedding officiant, who had run away at the sight of swords, was nowhere to be seen. But there was one more thing I saw, one thing I had been warned of seeing: Virgil and the imposter were both wearing crowns.

"Everyone," Thomas said into the microphone on the altar. "This man, the one you call Prince Roman, is an imposter. The real Roman disappeared during the Valentines Day attack and has yet to reappear."

"Until now!" Owen yelled as him and Camille carried Roman out through the glass doors. Everyone gasped, some people in the crowd screamed. After a short moment of silence, Virgil let go of the imposter's hand and dropped to his knees.

"Roman.." he whispered, reaching out to grab the real Roman's hand for the first time in weeks. Camille, Anthony, Owen, me, Patton, Logan, and Thomas all turned to each other and smiled briefly, knowing that Virgil was free at last. "Oh God, Roman..."

But then something happened, something that must have been triggered by hearing Virgil's voice, Roman's eyes opened slightly and locked with Virgil's. The former smiled weakly and whispered, barely audible, "Lo siento." Then his eyes closed again.

Suddenly, I felt my legs fall out from under me—the imposter had kicked Anthony and I in the legs, taken my sword, and held it to Virgil, who quickly turned around and found himself face to face with the point of the blade.

"He shouldn't have to die," the imposter said. "But you all made a deal and did not uphold your terms." He raised his sword as Virgil tried to get up, but suddenly another sword came shooting at the imposter, stopping right in front of his face.

"Don't you dare touch my son," Patton growled, his voice echoing and a furious fire in his eyes. I took the imposter's moment of frightened hesitation and grabbed the sword back from him and held it up to his throat.

"Guards, seize him!" Anthony shouted. Instantaneously, guards and citizens alike came running and tackled the imposter, and though he fought some of them off, there were too many of them to fight.

"Go!" I yelled, grabbing Virgil by the wrist up from the floor and running. Behind us, Tori was carrying Lori and Patton was carrying Roman. Following behind them were Logan, Thomas, and Anthony.

"We're alive!" I yelled excitedly. And again, but this time everyone that could speak joined in, "WE'RE ALIVE!"

Thomas's P.O.V.
We went to the stables and got four horses, then set off to the hospital. While we rode, everyone remained silent, as though speaking was bad luck. After some time, we reached the hospital.

Just seconds after we walked through the doors (though some of us weren't walking) we were met by anxious doctors and nurses who quickly rushed Roman, Lori, and Tori away.

It was all a blur, really, after the injured of us were whisked away. I saw the blood on some of our clothes and hands and arms, the sweat stains, the dirt. I saw the way everyone looked exhausted and relieved and scared. Then I saw Virgil, alone outside and sitting on the concrete sidewalk.

Trying to calm myself, I walked outside to sit with him. He was crying, though his face was hidden by his arms and knees, and he was shaking violently. I reached out carefully to put my hand on his shoulder, but he jumped the moment I touched him.

"I'm sorry," I apologized frantically. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay."

"I'm not okay," he sobbed. "How could I be? I-I've been under someone else's control, I've been in love with a fake, I almost m-married someone that wasn't even Roman!"

"I know, I know," I said. "But you're free now, and Roman is too."

"Roman... oh God, what happened to him?"

"We don't know yet."

"Have you heard anything about him?"

"Virgil, he was only taken away five minutes ago."

Virgil paused for a minute, breathing heavily but slowing it down. He was still wearing the white suit he was supposed to have been married in, but now it wasn't all white—the cuffs of his sleeves had splotches of blood on them, and various parts of the outfit were stained with tears.

"Who were the two girls that were with us?" he asked.

"Those are Lori and Tori Lambargni, the kingdom's royal mages. They've been helping the kids figure out what's going on with the imposter and find Roman."

"So I take it I've missed a lot?"

"Yeah. They made a book club too, but it's a little suspicious. I'm pretty sure that 'book club' is just a disguise."

Virgil grinned, despite still crying a bit and shaking. A few moments later, he turned to look at me, seeming like he was about to wipe his tears but stopping upon seeing the blood on his hands and clothes.

"Did you hear what he said to me?" he asked.

"Roman?" Virgil nodded. "He said something to you? I thought he was unconscious."

"He was, but he wasn't for a few seconds. He.. he l-looked at me, and he said something to me."

"What did he say?"

"I don't know."

"What?"

"He said it in a different lang—"

"Mr. Sanders," interrupted a voice from behind us. I turned to see a nurse leaning out of the door. "Both Mr. Sanders, you are needed to meet with the staff caring for the three patients you brought in."

A.N.
"We're alive!" I yelled excitedly. And again, but this time everyone that could speak joined in, "WE'RE ALIVE!" In other words: "look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now!"

I couldn't help myself, man, I saw an opportunity for a Hamilton joke and I took it. You'd be lying like Eliza saying "I'm fine" if you said you haven't done it too. And yeah, I did just use this author's note as an opportunity for Hamilton jokes, but I wasn't about to just throw away my shot.

Okay, okay, I'll stop now (I bet right now you're expecting a Non-Stop joke, but I'll leave it to you). Adiós, guys, gals, and non-binary pals.
