Gifts
"Okay but how did we manage to sneak a puppy into the school?"
"The same way we managed to become animagi under everyone's noses, Moony." Sirius rolled his eyes.
"Why are we doing this again?" Peter asked us.
"It's a gift for Hagrid. He's saved us from the centaurs one too many times, same with the acromantulas. Besides, it's our last few months here and we owe him. Why not give him some company?" James said.
"We don't speak of the damn spiders. I still have the nightmares." I shuddered. "Follow the spiders, James said. Let's see where it leads to, James said. That was your worst idea to date, Prongs."
"I thought the tree swinging was his worst idea." Sirius laughed holding the puppy. "Hagrid is going to love this."
...
"Hey, Hagrid. What do you got there?"
"It's a hippogriff! I called him Buckbeak. Wanna pet him?" Hagrid asked me smiling and I nodded. "First you bow and if he bows back, then you can pet him."
I bowed and the hippogriff almost immediately bowed back making me smile.
"He's very pretty, Hagrid. Where did you get it?" Peter asked sitting down next to me.
"Had an injured wing so I took him in to fit it. He should be all better now and going to his mamma soon." Hagrid said and poured us all drinks. "What brings you troublemakers here?"
"Now now, Hagrid. We've left our mischievous ways ages ago when James became Head Boy." Sirius smirked but Hagrid didn't believe him. "Okay, okay. It's mostly Jade and I who are causing trouble."
"And making my life hell." James rolled his eyes.
"Jade, is that what I think it is?" I nodded and showed him the ring. Hagrid teared up and pulled me and Sirius into a hug. "Congratulations you two. When did it happen?"
"The night of the Yule Ball in the Astronomy tower." Sirius smiled.
"You're coming to the wedding, right Hagrid?" I asked once we broke from the hug.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Anyways. We're graduating soon and we owe you a shit ton for saving our necks various times throughout the years." Remus said smiling.
"So we decided to give you something to keep you company." Sirius smiled and moved his hands revealing the puppy. "It's our way of saying thanks for saving our asses on more than one occasion."
Hagrid teared up again and took the puppy from Sirius' arms.
"It's a male, by the way. We named him Fang, but you can change the name if you like." I smiled at Hagrid.
"I'll keep calling him Fang. That way you kids will still be with me. Thank you so much." Hagrid looked at us teary-eyed and smiling.
"You're welcome, Hagrid."
...
"Minnie, you in here?" We all walked into her office to hind her looking at us through her 'spectacles of death' as Sirius calls them.
"What can I do for you all today?" McGonagall asked us and we sat down by her desk.
"Let's be real here, Minnie. You've adopted us as your children. We're Minnie's kids." Sirius said taking a biscuit.
"What Sirius means is that you care for us as if we were your own children." Remus elbowed Sirius making him choke on his biscuit. "And all of us are eternally grateful for not getting us killed by all the things we've done."
"Which lets be honest, the majority of them could've gotten us killed." James shrugged.
"We just want to say thank you, Minnie. For looking after us." I said and handed her two pictures. "We don't know what's going to happen once we leave, but this way you'll remember us. It's a picture from our first and last year here."
"It's our way of saying thank you for everything." Peter said smiling. The boys stood up and went to leave but I decided to stay behind.
"Don't go to Slughorn without me." I yelled at them.
"Everything okay, Miss Potter?" McGonagall smiled softly at me and put the pictures away. "Thank you for the lovely gift."
"I know what you did, Minnie." I smirked.
"I don't know what you mean, Miss Potter."
"Actually, I won't be Miss Potter for very long. Soon, I'll be known as Mrs. Jade Black." I smiled and showed her the ring. "You're coming to the wedding, Minnie."
"Congratulations, Miss Potter! And I'll try to save the date." McGonagall smiled and I swore I saw tears in her eyes. "But I still don't know what you mean."
"It was you who helped us become animagi. I'd know that handwriting anywhere." McGonagall started to protest but I stood up and hugged her. "Thank you, Minnie. I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you so much."
"There's no need to thank me, Miss Potter. You are a very bright student and you could've done it on your own. You just needed-"
"A nudge in the right direction. That's what you've always told us. That and 'why is it that whenever there's trouble, it's always you five?'" I smirked.
"You five were always involved in some kind of mischief." McGonagall laughed slightly.
"We're still your children, Minnie. And you love us."
"That I do, Miss Potter."
...
"Hello, Professor Slughorn." The boys and I smiled and walked into his classroom. "You busy?"
"Grading your essays, Mister Pettigrew. What can I do for you all today?" Slughorn put away the papers and looked at us.
"I see Lily has already given you her gift." I said noticing the goldfish on his desk. "Well, the boys and I are giving gifts to all of our Professors as a way of saying thank you for having the patience to deal with us for seven years. We know it wasn't easy."
"You five haven't made it easy for us." Slughorn laughed.
"Who doesn't love a challenge, Professor?" James smirked and handed him his gift. "A brand new cauldron filled to the brim with ingredients for your potions. We noticed that yours was looking a bit worn out so we bought you a new one."
"Plus, I think there's something that my Dad's been perfecting that I think you should teach here next year. The instructions are inside the cauldron and a sample vial that I did last week." I smiled at him.
"This cauldron is lovely. Thank you all so much."
"You're welcome, Professor."
...
"Professor Flitwick, you're in here?" We walked into his office to see him grading more papers.
"Finishing up your exams. What can I do for you boys today?"
"Do you remember our first lesson?" Sirius smirked. "The old swish and flick?"
"Of course! I remember that Miss Potter and Mister Lupin were the first in the class to get it right. Why?" Flitwick asked us.
"Well, we got you this as a way of saying thank you." Remus pulled out a clear box containing five feathers and handed it to Flitwick. "It's the same feathers we used the day we learned the spell. Don't ask how we've kept the feathers after seven years."
"We just want to say, thank you for teaching us everything we know and for challenging us when things got too easy." James smiled.
"I'm touched, kids. I'll definitely cherish this."
"Thank you for not giving up on us, Professor." I smiled at him.
"You're most welcome, Miss Potter."
...
After an entire day of handing out gifts, it was finally time to go to the Headmaster.
"What's the password again?" Peter asked.
"Licorice wands. Don't ask how I know it." I said. James said the password and we climbed the stairs and entered the office.
"So sorry to barge in here, Professor Dumbledore. Dreadful etiquette, I know." Sirius smirked.
"Just the students I wanted to see. What can I help you with?" Dumbledore asked us.
"Well I don't know if you heard, but we've been going to every single teacher here and giving them gifts as a thank you for teaching us and for having the patience." James said.
"And you're our last stop." I finished. "The boys and I want to thank you Headmaster for having the patience to deal with us and letting McGonagall 'adopt us' as her children."
"And for giving me an opportunity to be here and have the family I have today." Remus smiled at us and I hugged him.
"For making me Head Boy and for trusting me." James said.
"For not giving up on me." Peter said smiling.
"And me, for showing me that I'm not like my parents and giving me these three idiots and my sunshine." Sirius smiled and kissed my forehead.
"I'm taking offense to the word idiot." James said.
"Anyways." I hit James upside in the head. "We just want to say thank you for giving all of us an opportunity to be here and to be the people we are today."
"Well, I'm touched. And congratulations you two." Dumbledore pointed at my ring. "I have a proposition for all of you."
"Which is?" We all said in unison.
"To fight against Voldemort and his army. You give have shown great resilience and have stepped up to a challenge when times got hard. Of course, this is completely optional."
"And you don't mind that I'm a Slytherin?" I asked slightly on edge.
"Of course not, Miss Potter! Your cunning and ambitious ways are exactly what we need in the Order of the Phoenix." Dumbledore smiled making me sigh in relief. "I'll give you five to think about it, but the offer will always stand."
"A chance to beat my cousin's ass? I'm in." Sirius said.
"If he's in, I'm in." James shrugged.
"I'm in to make sure these two won't die out there." Remus rolled his eyes.
"I'm in too." Peter smiled. The four boys looked at me.
"I believe in your cause Professor. I'm ready to kick some ass with these boys." I smiled and they all cheered hugging me.
"Well then it's settled. Welcome to the Order of the Phoenix."
