Willow
I've just finished tying my hair into a bun when I hear the knock on the door. I feel a sick, swooping feeling in my stomach.
It's really happening.
I can barely even imagine it going well now that I've had all those nightmares.
I hear my father going to answer the door. I follow. The sky outside is covered with thick, rolling clouds.
A man with steely grey eyes and a square jaw is standing on the doorstep, exchanging a few quick words with my father. He wears a freshly ironed suit the color of pencil lead. His voice is deep and gravelly.
Delphi is behind my father. Her face expresses how anxious we both are.
I realize with a jolt that the man is looking at us and speaking.
" - to be administrated in approximately thirty minutes. Willow and Delphinium Galloway will now be escorted to the administration building."
Delphi hugs our father first, and I watch them embrace one another. It makes me want to cry, and not out of jealousy. But the picture is beautiful. And it's a picture of sincere love. When I hug him myself, I feel the power of it. He whispers that he'll be proud of us no matter how the test goes. I can only nod at him. Then we follow the man to a shiny black van. Delphi and I sit together in the back seat. I notice a tiny security camera watching us. Delphi looks out the window as the man gets in. I do the same. Every once in a while, Delphi makes a few faces into the camera. She sticks her tongue out, crosses her eyes, etc... It at least provides some sort of entertainment. But I would never do that myself.
All too soon, we are being escorted into a tall concrete building. Time seems to be moving by too fast. We are led through a long grey hallway and then the man asks which one of us is which. Delphi starts to lie, but I cut in and tell him the honest truth. My mischievous sister shoots me a glance of annoyance, and then the man tells her to enter a room.
I look at her.
She looks at me.
In this, we are looking at our terrified selves.
"Good luck!" I muster but the man drags me down to my room.
"I love-," is all I hear before I'm shoved into the room. Six doors down, on the opposite side of the hallway, it is a room not unlike the one in my dream. It has the same sterile feel. But, unlike my dream, I am not in the room next to Delphi. I wonder why. If they are in any particular order.
The room has harsh lighting, and is very tall. The ceiling is a mirror (probably one way) and a single grey desk and chair sit in the centre of the room. I sit down in the chair. There is no clock on the wall. I don't dare look up. Who knows how many people are watching from behind that mirror? Who knows who is laughing at me? Critiquing me? Judging me?
A woman enters, carrying a white box about one foot square. She has jet-black hair pulled into a tight, shiny low ponytail and deep brown, almond shaped eyes. Her expression is kind. She wears a navy blue jacket, a matching skirt, white blouse, and navy blue heels. Her jacket is slightly rumpled from carrying the box.
She drops the box next to my desk, smoothing the wrinkles out of her jacket. She hands me three sharpened pencils out of the box, the same kind we are given at school. This, strangely enough, is comforting.
Then she takes out the test. A series of packets, all about a centimeter thick. They stack up on my desk to less than half a foot. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Every packet has my full name printed on it along with a few instructions.
Still a bit overwhelming, but nothing compared to my dream last night. I probably won't finish though.
I try to steady my breathing and let myself calm down. It's hard not to think about the importance of my results on this test.
The woman gives me a small, strained smile.
"You have two hours to accomplish what you can. You may start now."
She taps a button on a small device on her hand and walks out of the room. The door seals behind her and the room settles into a thick silence.
I pick up the first packet, which is entitled, Spatial Intelligence, which is my best subject, and place it in front of me. My full name reads, "Galloway, Willow Jessamine."
I take a deep breath and open the packet. My eyes fall on the first question.
