New Place, New Discovery
Denzal's job continued with no disturbances. The silver wind he saw finally disappeared and it must have been a hallucination. Their was no ominous sound and no twitches of twigs but at times he realized it shows up at night or even in the dark. He would search it up later. Still, his ranger duties were normal as ever, apart from a few wheelchair accidents. That didn't stop Ranger Fern from informing the others about his possible hallucination to the others. So now, everywhere he went, his workers would wave at him or ask about his conditions. Denzal always shrugged it off and wished they would stop pestering him. So now a rumor spread that he might have a disease that involves hallucinations.
Thankfully, not everyone doted on him like a child. At least Chief Williams and Wright treated normally. They asked him about the park, where the tourists were, or a report. They only asked about his medical conditions once and never again. Wright was just as annoying as ever, trying to invite him for a bear, which Denzal quickly declined. Williams treated him like any other employee.
He was having a perfectly normal day. Telling of teenagers, pointing the right direction and picking the litter. Denzal was sure the vision was just moonlight tricking his eyes. As he was trekking through his usual route, he got an order to answer to a meeting. Apparently, some historians were searching for the footsteps of a native tribe, and one of them theorized that one of their settlements was here.
"Okay, but why are they coming here, exactly?" asked a red-headed ranger. Denzal stood in the meeting room with the other workers. Some drank their coffees as Williams finished the announcement. Williams stood on a the usual chief podium in front of the crowd. Behind here was a pin board with her to-do lists. He frowned at the idea of archeologists mining their way through mountains just to find some hidden treasure.
"According to them, a native tribe settled in a hidden cave here," said Williams. "They're here to just poke around and, hopefully, not damage anything".
"But explorers in the past already searched through this entire acre," spoke a sanitation worker. "What more could they look for?" A few agreed with his question.
"Not a clue, but they said they might've discovered a 'secret passageway' the natives built. The rocks and mountains are over centuries old and the cave might've collapsed blocking the entrance".
"And all of these are just theories, right?" Denzal raised an eyebrow.
"They were given permission to excavate the area for a maximum of a month but they'll be forced to cancel the operation if they do any significant damage". Well that's reassuring, he sarcastically thought.
"On the bright side, your tour guide job is pushed back," Wright whispered. He couldn't deny that he was relief that it was.
"Back to topic," she snatched a paper from the board and dragged another board from the ceiling of what seemed to be a map of the park. "Professor Archibald Stone is head of the expedition called Century Stone Corporation or the CSC. Long story short, they're here to research on a native tribe that once lived here millions of years ago".
"How did you get all this?" asked a shot, stubby man.
"They owe my a debt at point so they explained their research. They promised to limit the mining area and prohibited excessive use. No bombs or excavators". The last statement was directed to Denzal, knowing how much he disliked excessive use. He nodded in acknowledgment.
"So where are they gonna mine exactly?" asked a brunette women.
"The cliffs in the North area and Southwest of the jagged peaks," she point to top part and lower left of the map. The entrance was far on the right side of the map, so they would be safe but the problem was the Southwest mining area was near the lake.
"With the archeologists arriving, there's bound to be a few changes," Williams continued. "Greyfield, Wright, Rodriguez, Moore, and Taylor, you guys are in charge with guarding the mining areas. Make sure the tourists know and keep anyone out. The pamphlet will be given to the changing schedules this afternoon".
Denzal saw three other people nodding their heads. He sighed knowing he would need to work in a group again. Once the meeting ended, he excused himself to order a black coffee. He felt as bitter as the drink knowing two more noisy people would be with him.
"Looks like the 'Lone Wolf' is given a pack".
He turned to see Wright with a cheerful smile. He grunted at his statement.
"Come on, imagine the rumors of you suddenly working in a group. The 'not-so-lonely-anymore wolf!'"
Denzal continued to ignore. "The Lone Wolf" was a nickname the locals and rangers called him. He was known work alone and show no feeling but was ruthless with his territorial rules.
