Chapter 8

Daniel POV

"It is time to see how strong you truly are son of War." Nyx's voice washed over me, powerful enough to command any weaker willed mortal. She opened the doors to her mansion and I shut my eyes on instinct. "What are you doing demigod? If you wish to leave you need your eyes don't you?"

"So all I have to do is get to the other end of your mansion and I can leave?" I asked.

"Yes, but you must look at everything inside or you fail, would you like me to guide you to all the things you will need?" I stood still and didn't say a word. "You don't have a choice, either look at them of your free will or I will force you to." I opened my eyes.

Olivia POV

Me and Joel had just arrived at the city of Valdez in Alaska, halfway between Anchorage and McCarthy. Valdez is a port town surrounded by the wild beauty of Alaska. We got a hotel room and I fell onto the bed, exhausted from the hours of sitting in a train car. I fell into darkness as I closed my eyes, leaving my immediate surroundings behind. I was floating and being pulled as if I were in a river, I couldn't see a thing. I heard growls, skitters, and groans coming from every direction. I had to be in a large room since I could hear the echoes of every noise made. I heard a door open and all the noises stopped, there was a presence entering the room, it felt like a god's aura but much stronger. "What could be this powerful?" I thought. Then I saw the being emitting the aura and I wanted to run. She was 40 feet tall at least and was only distinguishable by her skin and armor being a slight bit brighter than the rest of the room. She lit the room with the light of the stars, quasars, and entire solar systems. She was using a whip of stars as a collar and leash to drag a man behind her. I willed my dream closer to him and fell to my knees, vision blurring, it was Daniel. I reached for his face but when my hand touched him it turned to black vapors. Nyx dragged him to a corner of the room that my mind would not allow me to see. Daniel's eyes became scared and unfocused before he blinked rapidly and glared at whatever it was he was being forced to look at. The scene suddenly changed to a warm and sunny pasture with a single tree. There was a man in armor sitting beneath it, he had the aura of a god. His armor was pitch black and his helmet was removed and laid on the grass. His face wash ash gray and when he opened his eyes they stared directly into mine. I tried to back away or to the side of his gaze but his black pits were looking directly at me and I was frozen in place.

"Why do you look so distressed," He took his helmet and held it under one arm. "I am only the darkness lurking in you." He started to 'walk' towards me; every step turning his leg to black mist, then becoming solid as the process repeated with his other leg. "Those who are labeled as 'paranoid' merely sense my presence...and the first fear of all men: darkness. All fear what they cannot see, and I AM the unseen." He was standing a mere foot away, I started to panic and tried to move or look around. But I was paralyzed, whether by his gaze, his presence of fear, or his power over my dream I did not know. "Now go, and spread my Fear." He reached across his body and swiped his arm through my body, and I was disassembled into black mist. My eyes flew open and I quickly looked at myself to make sure my body was still there. I sat up in bed and looked over to Joel who was laying still in his sleeping bag. It was 6 a.m. so I got up, grabbed a change of clothes, and went to take a shower. When I was done Joel was still asleep so I wrote him a note saying that I was out buying us breakfast. I took the elevator down to the first floor and went into town. I bought us sandwich supplies and a small container of water bottles.

Joel POV

I awoke to Olivia kicking me and saying "It's 9, get up!" I slid out of my sleeping bag, got new clothes, and went to get breakfast. I had almost finished eating when Olivia told me that we were leaving. I shoved the rest of my food into my mouth and followed her. We bought our train tickets to Anchorage and hoped there wouldn't be anything to stall us.

Time Skip

We arrived in Anchorage and were greeted by a beautiful woman with blonde hair. She was wearing a blue and white tie-dye blouse and jeans. She looked me in the eye and I took a step back, startled. Her eyes were miniature suns, they took up most of her eye but the rest was black. The suns' surfaces would swirl and seem to come out of her eyes like a solar flare. "Hello heroes, I know you have come a long way to talk with me." She turned and started walking, "Follow me, and if you haven't figured it out already, I am Hemera."
