Chapter 7
Joel POV
When we got there we asked for a room and where in Alaska there's permanent sunlight, the guy said that in Anchorage on June 21st there's permanent sunlight but anywhere from March 19 to August 23 there's more sunlight there than anywhere else in the USA. I thanked him then paid for our room and went to the room marked 12. When we went in we saw a room with a small bed and a smaller couch, it had no windows and a door that led to a tiny bathroom. I took the couch and Olivia took the bed. Olivia fell asleep almost instantly, but I stayed up thinking about Daniel. He took the fall for us while he was injured, and didn't stop fighting until he physically couldn't. I can never be like him, it's not in my nature to be so rage-induced. I can't be as physically fit as him, I can't fight like him, all I can do is run and shoot a bow. I fell asleep from sheer exhaustion. I dreamt of me and Daniel fishing at a pond, he looked over at me and I saw that his eyes were black with a glowing star in the center. When he spoke, it was in a female voice. "Your quest will fail, the son of Ares will become one of my children, he will hinder your progress. The only way to complete the quest is to leave him. The choices are to leave him and finish the quest, or save him and doom the world." Daniel then started to emit tendrils of darkness that reached out and lashed at anything that shined, leaving the object black as night. They spiraled upward until they touched the sky and expanded, absorbing clouds and bright blue heavens. The stars slowly appeared, twinkling and streaking across the black canvas. The moon was the only thing missing from the perfect night sky. I looked around in the darkness and could see almost nothing. My dreams then flashed images of a warrior in black armor holding a scythe. A woman with a blue Greek dress and skin like white marble, hair like golden sunrays and a glowing aura of warmth around her. My dreams ended with Olivia shaking me from my slumber. I told her what Nyx said and she broke down in tears, I didn't want to make it worse but I told her the rest of my dream. She wiped her eyes and stood up.
"I can deal with the world close to being ruined. Let's just get going, we need to travel more than 2000 miles in less than 2 days since it's June 19th." Once she was done she grabbed her things and walked out the door. I followed soon after and we went to the rain station. When we got there we found that the farthest we could go with the money we had was McCarthy, 300 miles from Anchorage. We decided that being in Alaska was better than being in Washington.
(Below Tartarus)
Daniel POV
After the hellhound shadow-traveled, I was on a jut of rock overlooking an endless void. I heard the smoothest voice wash waves of laughter over me. Rising out of the void was Nyx just as Joel described her. My throat started burning from the air, my skin producing rashes that I wanted to claw at until my arms were a bloody mess. "Where am I? Why does it hurt to breathe?"
"You are in Tartarus, soon you will join me in my mansion of night. I just wanted you to meet Akhlys and see what she thinks of you." The empousa dragged me to a place blooming with flowers, some of which I recognized as poison. I was dragged to a miserable hag who looked like the fates, furies, and every demon had come together and made the most horrible thing they could. She spoke in a raspy voice that cracked every other word and her speech was interrupted by a hacking cough or choking sound,
"You are quite the sack of evil emotions aren't you? Seeing your family slaughtered and turning to rage so you wouldn't show weakness but instead instill fear like the monsters did in you. Carrying so much worry and bitterness, losing control worse than you did when you were a child. I've watched you since you were little and crying in your anger. Cutting yourself and crying in desperation to the gods and only receiving gifts to use in your hatred or being blessed by me to give misery to others and unto yourself. You are my favorite mortal, I will enjoy hearing your screams from Nyx's mansion." She smiled, at least her face contorted into something of a gruesome smile. I was dragged away from her and thrown in the back of Nyx's chariot as it started to descend into the void to a mansion a few shades lighter than the rest of the area. She drove to the steps and forced me to limp up the steps to the front door.
