Chapter 6
"You just had to have a nightmare didn't you? I was sleeping peacefully and you started screaming before the sun was up. Couldn't you have waited another hour? You know I can hardly ever fall back asleep. What was your dream about? It better be useful." Daniel ranted.
"I saw a woman who looked like galaxy pattern clothes with a whip of stars, wings, and she was 40 feet tall." I said.
"Well, at least we know who our villain is." Olivia said.
"Who?" I asked.
"Nyx. The goddess of night, mother of the gods and goddesses of old age, strife, the furies,
and a lot more. Did she say anything about her plan?" Olivia said.
"A bunch of stuff about bringing eternal night and having her worst children wreak havoc on the Earth." I said.
"That's not surprising. But did she actually say 'wreak havoc'? That is so overused and cliché." Daniel said.
"Yeah it is." Olivia said.
"So where are we going?" I asked.
"To Day." Daniel said.
"Yeah, where are we going to today?" I asked.
"No we are going to the goddess of day." Olivia said.
"Oh, why, is she Nyx's greatest enemy or something?" I asked.
"No she's actually Nyx's daughter." Olivia said.
"How does that happen?" I asked.
"When Erebus and Nyx have a kid, Day is the result." Daniel said.
"What?" I asked.
"Gods are weird." Olivia said.
"Let's go before we're smote by one of them." Daniel said. We walked until we found a convenience store. Daniel bought a prism and we walked into the woods. "I'm going to Iris-
message Apollo, no one mention poems, especially haikus." Daniel said. He handed the prism to Olivia and when the sun shone on it and made a rainbow he said, "Oh Iris accept my offering and show me Apollo." As he said that he tossed a gold coin into the rainbow and it vanished. A second later an image showed up. A teenage boy in surf attire with a perfect tan, blond hair, and super muscular arms that I could see via his tank top was in the image. "Hey Daniel! What'cha calling me for? You want poetic advice?" the teen asked.
"No, I do not want poetic advice. I never want poetic advice ever again. I need to find Day." Daniel said.
"Day? She isn't easy to find. Why do you need her?" Apollo asked.
"She is the nicest of Nyx's children, and Erebus hates both me and Joel." Daniel said.
"Joel? He's with you? Where? I haven't been able to talk to him while I was getting the prophecy and driving the sun chariot around the world." Apollo said. Joel stepped into view and waved. The iris message was cut and suddenly Joel yelped after being picked up in a hug by his dad.
"Where did you come from?" Joel asked.
"I was on my way back from visiting mother. So I teleported after seeing you." He said.
"A little warning would have been nice." Joel grumbled.
"Can you tell us where she is Uncle?" Daniel asked.
"Yeah cuz, we need your help." Olivia said.
"Really, you actually said cuz instead of cousin." Daniel said.
"Yes I did." Olivia said.
"Whatever. Can you help us Apollo?" Daniel asked.
"If you go to Iris, she will likely know where Day is." Apollo said.
"Thank you Father." Joel said. Apollo nodded and snapped his fingers,
"Your bow will never break and you will never run out of arrows." He said.
"Thank you." I said.
"Goodbye my son, goodbye child of Ares, goodbye child of Demeter." Apollo said. He vanished in a flash of light that left us with spots in our eyes.
"Demeter?" I asked.
"Goddess of farming, wheat, and cereal." Daniel said.
"Cereal?" I asked.
"My mom tries to get us to eat wheat with milk in a bowl." Olivia said.
"Okay, so can you grow plants?" I asked.
"Yes, but I'm not very good at it." She said.
"Kay; where do we go to find Irish." I asked.
"Iris, and we can find her at her store." Daniel said. He then started chanting in Greek and a gray taxi showed up out of nowhere. He gestured for us to get in and we did. He looked at the three women in front and said, "We need to get to Iris' store where she and fleecy are." The three looked at him, two with empty sockets and one with an eye, and said,
"That's a long way, we need 20 drachmas." He gave them the money, one bit a coin with her one tooth, and they sped off so fast that everything was blurred. We stopped on a cliff and got out. There was a convenience store that Daniel started walking into. It looked like a hippie Buddhist ran the store; there were dream catchers and tie-dye t-shirts, statuettes of a fat guy, prisms, peace glasses and shirts, etc. We walked to the counter and Daniel rang the bell yelling, "Fleecy!" A girl ran to the counter from a back room.
"Daniel!" She yelled while giving him a hug over the counter. Olivia glared at her with a bit of jealousy. He grinned and pushed her down.
"Hey sis, this is Joel and this is Olivia." He said.
"Sis?" Olivia asked.
"Yeah she's my adopted sister after I came here during my wandering of the country. My real sisters are dead, so I adopted her as my sister since she reminded me of them."
"So you're not in a romantic relationship with her?" Olivia asked.
"No." He said in between laughs. I joined him and Olivia punched both of us in the arm. "Were you getting jealous?" He asked, getting closer to her face while smirking, she blushed and pushed him away. "I would never betray you like that." He said with a smile on his face.
"So what are you here for?" Fleecy asked.
"We need to talk to Iris."
"Okay." She led us to a back room where a woman was sitting. Daniel walked up to her and they had a discussion, I heard the woman say something about goat milk ding-dongs, and Daniel say he didn't want sugar free sugar. Then the woman yelled,
"Day! She is such a jerk! She's always bragging, 'I make the light for your rainbows' and I have to say that Apollo is the god of the sun, and she's like 'well there wouldn't be a sun if not for me.'" Iris exclaimed.
"Well we need to find her so we can stop Nyx from spreading darkness across the world like a cliché villain." Daniel said.
"Fine, she stays in the place where there's only an hour of night." Iris said.
"But I thought no god stayed there." Daniel said.
"Only she does, she tries to stand out in a place that stands out."
"But wouldn't she have trouble using her powers there?" Daniel asked.
"Yes, she's very weak, especially at night." Iris said.
"So we need to go to a place where gods can't help us and have to find her at night when Nyx has power and day doesn't?" Daniel asked.
"Yes, would you like some of Demeter's cereal for the trip?" she asked.
"NO!!" Olivia and Daniel yelled.
"I want to eat that stuff as much as I want to hear Apollo's haikus." Daniel said.
"Well then, have fun in Alaska!" Iris said. Daniel nodded and walked out of the back room. He gave Fleecy a hug before going to the door and holding it open for us. We all walked out of Iris' shop and into the now night air. Daniel led us to the nearest clothing store where he told us to get jackets for Canada and Alaska. We bought our jackets and got on a train to Canada.
"Anyone else wondering where the monsters are?" Olivia asked.
"Yeah, we haven't met any except for that hound." Daniel answered.
"Is that a bad thing?" I asked.
"Well it normally means an army is gathering." Olivia said.
"So... it's bad." I said.
"Yeah, really bad." Daniel said while pointing out the window. I looked out and my face fell. There were at least 20 monsters at the train station. "We need to kill those before they kill other people." Daniel said. He looked out again and cussed in a language that wasn't Greek or English. I was thrown against the opposite wall and lay on the ground, dazed. Daniel and Olivia were next to me, Olivia had blood dripping out of her head and arm. Daniel got up with a cut on his brow and a bigger one on his forehead that was bleeding. "Get her patched up!" he yelled. He ran to the door and ripped it off. Daniel then ran out yelling insults at the monsters and a bull-man.
(Daniel POV)
I ran through the doorway and yelled at the monsters and the Minotaur. I drew my sword and charged the beast. It ran at me, I dived to the left at the last second and swung my sword at his right leg. My sword went through it. I got up and jumped on him before he could recover and stabbed him. A dracaenae attacked me before he could even disintegrate. I disarmed her but she smacked me with her shield. I stumbled back; I had a broken nose for sure. I ran at her and did a spin move to get behind her and stab her in the gut. I looked at the train, there was a hellhound ripping through the metal to get through. Olivia is in there, injured, with Joel taking care of her. I yelled and charged; I cut down the monsters in my way, not even feeling their attacks. The dog looked at me and jumped down. It was bigger than any I had fought before. It jumped at me and swiped with its' massive paw. I barely avoided its machete sized claws and jabbed my sword into its shoulder. It moved, wrenching the sword out of my hands. I ran away from it and pulled out my scythe. It charged and I jumped to the side, swinging the massive blade at its side. It whimpered from the flesh wound I gave it. I felt a pain in my arm and found an arrow in my bicep. There were three draecaenean archers shooting at me, the hound took advantage of my focus on them and swiped, knocking me 15 feet back into the train car. I felt an enormous pain in my head and back. I could barely move and I only had my knife. I unsheathed and held it in front of me, an empousa came up to me and knocked the blade out of my hand. It dragged me out to the dog and bound my limbs. The archers came over and one said in its raspy, snake-like voice, "The other two have ssslain our acomplacesss, we must get out of here before they get usss and ressscue their friend here." The empousa nodded and dragged me onto the hellhounds' back. I saw Olivia and Joel on top of the train yelling at me before the hellhound shadow traveled.
(Joel POV)
I patched up Olivia's head and when she woke up we went to where the other monsters were that Daniel wasn't taking care of. I took out an archer and a few others that were focused on Olivia while she killed with her sword. A small hellhound came onto the train and I put an arrow in its throat. I heard footsteps on metal and turned around only to get my bow knocked out of my hands. I drew my knife and killed the hag with wings that attacked me. I looked at the group of monsters and found that Olivia had slain the others except for a lone snake lady. I picked up my bow and shot her. I helped Olivia onto the train and we turned around. "DANIEL!!" we yelled. He was being hauled onto a massive hellhound. I drew an arrow but it teleported away in the growing shadow of the train. Olivia was on her knees, crying. I hopped down and picked up his weapons. I put them into my bag and the sword in a ski bag someone had happened to drop while they evacuated. I walked over to Olivia, "I'm sad and scared Olivia, but I need you to get over it for now and help me. We can't save him by crying and sitting still." She nodded and gave me a sad smile while wiping her tears away. She got up and went to the train. I followed and we climbed up and over the car, dropping onto the grass on the other side.
"We should go before the police come. We're still in the U.S., about halfway through Washington." Olivia said.
"I know we are going to Alaska, but we have to go like a thousand miles just to get through Canada. How are we going to find Day in the largest state without knowing where to look?"
"Well, there's only a portion of Alaska that gets 23 hours of sun. But it's still a big area, I don't know, Daniel is the one who knows all the mythology."
"I guess we'll just have to figure it out as we go."
"Yeah." I answered
We ran to a town near the train station; it was a small town. We walked around until we found an inn we could stay at.
