Chapter 8
Back in the main city of Vale Roman had begun to order his soldiers to burn more buildings and homes. His hopes that by doing this he would be able to flush Jenni out of hiding. But so far his search was coming up empty. And this was driving Roman mad.
"I just don't understand!" The judge snapped as he paced the city streets, "Where is that witch?! And how did she even escape to begin with! I had guards at every door of the church! There's no way she could've gotten out!"
But suddenly a thought came to him, "unless...that boy-Lieutenant stay here and continue searching. I'm going to the church."
With that he boarded his carriage and was off.

Meanwhile, up on the balcony of the bell tower, Felix, Charlie, and Cinder were watching the destruction unfolding below.
"This isn't good," Cinder muttered.
"I knew that judge was crazy but this- this is something else," Charlie said.
Ugine came down the ladder and was clutching the tiny Jenni doll that he had made in his hands. He was terrified to think of what might've happened to his friend.
"I should go and find her," the fox faunus said.
"Absolutely not!" Cinder yelled, "if you go out there and Roman sees you who knows what he'll do?!"
"Well I can't just sit her and wait for her to come to me!"
"I don't know why you guys are so worried," Felix spoke up.
"Oh you're not?" Charlie asked.
"No way. This is Jenni we're talking about. I bet you anything that girl is three steps ahead of Roman and well out of harm's way. She'll be fine and when things calm down she'll come back here," Felix insisted.
"What makes you so sure?" Ugine asked.
"You told us that you love her Ugine, and it's obvious that she loves you too." Cinder said.
The redhead blushed a bit, he had thought that maybe Jenni had feelings for him. But hearing his friends say it made those thoughts feel all the more real.
"You're right. She'll be back. And then I'll tell her that I love her and then we'll be together and-"
"Ugine?" Called the voice of Jenni.
Ugine's face lit up and he ran to the tower's doorway to find the wolf faunus attempting to get inside.
He clasped her left hand in both of his, "Jenni! I'm so happy to see you! I was afraid that-"
But Jenni pulled away, "I'm happy to see you too but right now I need your help."
She then stepped into the room fully and the fox faunus saw that she wasn't alone, she was dragging a semi conscious Adam with her.
"This is Adam, you remember him right?" Jenni asked.
Ugine began to feel his stomach twist in knots, "y-yeah. What happened?"
"He was shot by an arrow and needs medical attention right away. Roman also discharged him from the guard for trying to save a family so he's become a fugitive just like me. I didn't know where else to go so I came here. I know I can trust you." Jenni said with tears brimming in her yellow eyes.
"Of course you can, bring him over here," her friend said. He lead Jenni over to his sleeping area which consisted of a pillow and a thin blanket.
The two of them then gently laid Adam down and Ugine quickly went to his work table and grabbed a needle and thread that he normally used when sewing up his own clothes or when he made the outfits for his tiny figurines.
Jenni thanked him and slowly slid back the collar of Adam's shirt exposing his shoulder.
Slowly the man began opening his eyes, "H-hey..."
"Hello," Jenni whispered as she began to thread the needle. But then she realized that she needed something to sterilize the wound before she could stitch it up. She saw a bottle of wine lying a few feet away.
"Ugine can I use that?" She asked
Ugine saw where she was pointing, "oh yeah." He picked it up and handed it to her.
"Good I could use a drink," Adam said.
Jenni rolled her eyes and uncorked the bottle before pouring the alcohol onto the open wound.
"By the brothers! Can you warn me next time?!" Adam shouted in pain.
"Sorry," the wolf faunus soothed as she began to stitch his arrow wound shut, "you're lucky, it almost pierced your heart."
Adam didn't say anything.
"So I have to ask. Why did you lie to me?"
"What?" Adam asked.
"I said, why did you lie to me? You're not human are you?" Jenni asked.
Adam's one good eye widened, "I-I-I don't know what-"
Jenni gave him a look, when she had rescued him earlier she had seen that the former captain of the guard had two black bull horns on either side of his head. But they weren't very big at all and appeared to be broken right at the base. They were very easy to miss if you weren't looking hard enough.
"Ok you're right. I lied. I got into a fight when I was younger with some human kids. The fight got physical pretty quickly and one of them grabbed me by my horns and well...snapped them off. They never grew back for some reason." Adam admitted.
Jenni frowned, "that's awful..."
He shook his head, "no. I mean it was at first until after a while when I began to see that people thought I was human, but I realized I could use that to my advantage. I could help everyone, human or faunus. It's why I became a soldier. To fight for those who can't fight for themselves. But you can see how good I was at that."
Jenni tied the thread off, "you're wrong. You protected that family today. You risked your life to save theirs. You're a great soldier and a great friend."
Adam reached up to cup the young woman's cheek in his hand, but before she could say anything he pulled her to him and kissed her lips.
Ugine walked by to see how everything was going but when he saw Jenni and Adam kiss he stopped in his tracks.
"N-no...." he muttered.
Tears welled in his turquoise eyes and he quickly turned away and went back to the balcony.
The two faunus held their kiss for another second but then Jenni gently pushed Adam off her, "I-I can't..."
"What?"
Jenni took a deep breath, "you're very nice Adam but there's someone-"
But before she could finish, her pet fox Trixi began yipping loudly.
Ugine went over to the small animal to see what was going on. He peered over the edge of the church.
"Jenni, Roman is coming you have to go now!"
"But what about-"
"I'll hide him don't worry. Just go!"
Jenni gave her friend a big hug, "thank you again Ugine. I mean it. I'll come back soon I promise.
The fox faunus awkwardly patted her back, "yeah sure. Now go!"
Jenni grabbed Trixi in her arms and quickly fled down the opposite side of the church building.
Ugine then draped a blanket over his sleeping area hoping that would hide Adam from view.
"Ugi?" Cinder asked.
He turned to her with tears in his eyes, "I was wrong Cinder. Jenni doesn't love me. She never has."
"But Ugi-"
"No!" Ugine snapped, "I'm done with this. Let's just go see what my master wants ok?"
Cinder nodded a tiny bit and so with one last sigh the broken hearted faunus turned and left to go greet his master.
