Chapter 7
Early the next morning Adam was outside with his platoon of soldiers waiting for Roman. As soon as the judge's carriage rolled up the men all stood at attention. Roman opened the door and walked out.
"Good morning sir," Adam said saluting him.
Roman merely nodded and rubbed his bloodshot eyes.
"Are you alright?"
The judge groaned, "yes. Just a bit of trouble last night with the fireplace that's all."
The captain nodded, "of course. So what are your orders?"
"Find the Faunus girl," Roman said.
The soldiers nodded and departed.
Soon they were going through Vale barging into every home trying to find any clues to where Jenni may have gone. A few times they were able to find whole groups of Faunus hidden in basements or attics. Whenever this happened Roman offered them money to turn Jenni in, but each time every one of them refused. They didn't want their friend fall into the judge's hands. Eventually the judge began to get frustrated so he had the whole group of Faunus arrested.
As they continued to search Adam began to feel more and more conflicted inside. From his perspective Jenni had done nothing wrong and yet she was being hunted down as if she had committed high treason. The whole thing felt wrong to him and it made him sick inside.
Soon it was early evening and Roman and the soldiers had made their way to a mill on the outside of town. The soldiers were all holding torches to see in the dim light.
A group of Faunus was watching from afar and muttering to themselves.
"The judge has lost his mind," one said.
"At this rate he'll lock up everyone in the kingdom," said another.
At the back of the group an old woman hobbled forward to hear what was going on. But if one looked close enough they would see that the "old woman" was really Jenni who had Trixi standing on her head and a tattered cloak pulled around her.
Jenni cautiously pulled the fabric of the cloak back to watch what was going on.
Roman meanwhile was interrogating the miller and his family.
"Your neighbors have told me that you harbor Faunus here. Is one of them the wolf girl Jennifer?"
The miller fell on his knees and gripped the edge of Roman's cloak, "please my lord have mercy. My home is always open to any traveler who may pass by. But I know nothing of this girl I swear."
The cruel man ripped his cloak out of the begging man's hands, "fine. But until we get to the bottom of this I'm placing you and your entire family under house arrest. If what you say is true then you have nothing to fear."
With that he left the house with Adam by his side.
Roman then closed the front door and grabbed a spear from one of the soldiers and used it to jam the door to prevent it from being opened from the inside.
"Burn the house." He told Adam.
"What?!" Adam asked in disbelief.
"You heard me Captain Taurus. Burn the house."
One of the soldiers handed his torch to the captain.
Adam took it and held it in his hand. Slowly he walked up to the house and was about to set it aflame when he stopped.
"No."
"Excuse me?!" Roman snapped.
"I said no!" Adam shouted putting the torch out in a barrel of water, "I may have been trained to follow orders but I wasn't trained to kill the innocent."
The other man rolled his eyes, "these people are traitors and must be made examples of."
He grabbed another torch and threw it at the roof where it promptly caught fire.
Adam's eyes widened in horror as he heard the family scream from the inside once they realized they were trapped in the flaming house. Thinking quickly he used his sword to smash the window and quickly made his way inside. He then helped the family escape out the broken window.
"Thank you," the miller said once he and his family were safe outside.
Adam sighed in relief, however, just then he felt something hard make contact with the back of his neck and he crumpled. Lt Winchester hoisted the captain up and held his sword to his throat.
"You know the punishment for insubordination is death," Roman said getting up in the captain's face.
Jenni saw this and gasped. Adam had just saved that family and now he was going to die for it? She realized she had to do something.
Adam narrowed his good eye, "consider it my highest honor sir."
Roman rolled his eyes and motioned to Lt Winchester to slit the former captain's throat. But just as he was about to a stone hit Roman's horse in the backside. Courtesy of Jenni.
This surprised the animal so much that it reared up on its back legs and knocked Roman off its back onto the ground.
Seizing his chance Adam wrestled his way out of Winchester's grasp and punched the other soldiers aside before grabbing the horse's reigns and pulling himself into the saddle.
He snapped the reigns and urged the horse forward.
The other soldiers then began shooting arrows at the retreating captain and while many missed one lucky shot pierced Adam through his shoulder in the small gap where his armor didn't quite meet.
Adam fell off the horse and into the river below. But the soldiers still shot their arrows into the water trying to finish their former superior off.
Once he sank below the water Roman put his hand up. "Don't waste your arrows. Let the traitor rot in his watery grave. Back to town now."
With that the soldiers left and headed back to the main city.
Except if they had only waited a second longer then they would've spotted Jenni hiding among the bushes at the riverside. Once she was sure that the men were gone she dove into the water and grabbed Adam's unconscious body before pulling him onto the riverbank. Quickly she removed the top half of his armor to inspect the wound. It had already begun to bleed through and soak his shoulder red.
Jenni took the cloak that she was still wearing and ripped it in half before tying it around the wound as a tourniquet.
Adam moaned a little.
"Shhhh," Jenni said softly, "we'll get you help I promise. You just gotta hang on ok?"
She smoothed his hair out a bit and felt her hand brush over something hard near the base of his hairline, "what the?"
Once she realized what she was touching she gasped, "so that's why you were so willing to help me."
Biting her lip she added, "don't worry. You deserve to live after what you did for that family."
Slowly she helped the captain stand up and draped one of his arms around her shoulders. The wolf Faunus then began dragging her wounded friend toward the kingdom, desperate to find help before it was too late.
