Chapter 5
"Please wait!" Jenni said running after Ugine.
"I'm sorry but go away," Ugine called back to her.
"What's going on Ugine?" Felix asked as the Fox Faunus raced past him.
"I'm being chased by a girl." Ugine said trying to get past his stone friends.
"A girl?" Charlie asked.
"Yes and I would really like-"
"That's wonderful Ugine!" Cinder gushed.
"Now what you need to do is give her some slack then reel her in. And give her some slack then reel her in," Felix said.
Cinder bopped him on the head, "Felix this is a girl we're talking about not a mackerel."
The three of them then stiffened up when they saw Jenni walk into the bell tower.
"There you are. I thought I had lost you," Jenni said.
Ugine cleared his throat, "well umm it was good to see you again. But I have very important chores to get to. So if you don't mind I'm gonna go do them."
He turned around and began walking away from the young woman again.
Jenni followed him up a ladder, "I just came to apologize for earlier. I didn't mean to...embarrass you..."
She was cut off when she noticed the beautiful display that Ugine had built of Vale.
"Did you make all of this?"
"Most of it yeah....I live up here," the fox Faunus explained.
Jenni touched the tiny figurines, "man if I could make stuff like this you wouldn't find me dancing on the street for coins."
"But you're a wonderful dancer," Ugine argued, "its like that man said earlier, you're the finest dancer in Vale."
The wolf Faunus groaned and put her hands over her face, "I told Sun to stop calling me that. It's embarrassing I don't want people to think that I'm better then them."
Changing the subject she added, "Hey what's this?
She picked up a handkerchief revealing two tiny figurines underneath.
"Oh those ones aren't finished," Ugine explained.
Jenni crouched down to look at the tiny dolls' faces, "wait that's the baker. And the blacksmith. The likeness is incredible."
Her friend blushed, "oh it's nothing really."
"You're a very creative person-umm..." Jenni then realized that she had no idea what the young man's name was.
"Ugine." He finished for her.
Jenni smiled showing off her fangs, "Ugine. You're very creative. And lucky. I mean you have all this space to yourself."
Ugine rubbed the back of his neck with his hand, "I mean not really. I share this space with the gargoyles and the bells obviously."
The young woman saw a very large bell and stood beneath it.
"That one's Big Marie," Ugine explained, "isn't she beautiful?"
"Hello!" Jenni yelled into the bell which caused her voice to echo.
"She likes you," the young man said smiling.
Trixi, Jenni's pet fox, walked behind her owner and let out a loud yip sound. The resulting echo scared the living daylights out of the small animal.
Jenni giggled and looked around, "I never realized how many bells there were in here."
Ugine looked over at the balcony, "come with me I want to show you my favorite place in the tower."
He grabbed her hand and pulled her up a ladder onto the balcony.
"Ta da!"
Jenni felt her breath catch in her throat. From the tower's balcony she had a breathtaking view of the whole city.
"Wow. I bet not even the town leaders have this beautiful a view. I could stay up here forever looking at this.
Ugine dug the toe of his shoe into the stone, "you could you know. Stay up here. With me."
The young woman let out a sad sigh and turned away, "no...I can't. Remember what Judge Torchwick said? If I leave the church he'll arrest me. If I stayed here I would never be able to go anywhere. I would have no freedom. I'd be stuck in a cage like an animal. That's the one thing us faunus hate. Being treated like animals."
The fox Faunus reached up and felt his fox ears before feeling his tail behind him, "well you're not like other Faunus."
"Oh and what are the other Faunus like?"
Ugine walked behind her, "well Faunus are mean and selfish. And they steal and lie and cheat and-"
"And you're one of them! One of us!" Jenni yelled interrupting him.
The young man took a step back and his ears flattened against his head.
The wolf Faunus felt bad seeing this and she took a deep breath, "Sorry. I guess being raised up here with Judge Torchwick means you have a pretty skewed view of us. You didn't even know you were a Faunus until today did you?"
Ugine shook his head before sitting down on the roof, "I was always told I was a monster. That nobody would want me."
"Well it seems that he was wrong then. About both of us," Jenni said sweetly.
Below the twosome the gargoyles were standing on each other's shoulders trying to listen.
"What are they saying?" Felix asked
"I think the girl just said that Roman's nose is long and he wears a dress," Cinder said.
Felix smiled, "Ha! I knew it!"
Jenni sat down next to him, "Come with me I know the other Faunus would love to have you."
"I can't," Ugine said, "this is my home. I'm happy here."
He felt Jenni slide closer to him, "ok then I'll visit you. When's the best time?"
Hearing this flustered the Faunus young man a bit, "oh I'm not sure we would be able to see each other again. I mean with all the guards and my master..."
"Ok then I'll come after sunset."
"Oh no I ring the bells for evening mass and of course I have to ring them to signal the hours-"
Ugine just kept babbling until Jenni interrupted him with a kiss on the cheek.
"Whatever works for you is perfect," Ugine said letting out a stupid giggle.
Jenni reached into her bodice and pulled out a pendant. It was made of leather and tied on a piece of string. Woven into the leather frame was more string and tiny beads.
"Here if you ever change your mind and want to come be with me and the other Faunus this will help. Just remember 'when you wear this woven band you hold the city in your hand,'" the wolf Faunus put it around her friend's neck.
Ugine nodded, "thank you. Now we need to get you out of here."
"How?" Jenni asked, "There are guards at every door."
"We won't use a door," Ugine said cryptically.
"What?"
The young man picked up Trixi, "here you carry her. And I'll carry you."
Jenni tilted her head in confusion but then decided to trust her new friend. She took her pet from Ugine's arms then felt him pick her up bridal style. He then climbed over the balcony and inched his way across the stone walkway. When he got close enough he jumped to the next spire of the church before landing gracefully on the metallic roof.
"Nice work," Jenni praised.
Ugine blushed, "oh it was nothing."
Suddenly the shingle they were standing on gave out and both Faunus went sliding down the roof. But before they went off the roof Ugine was able to catch the edge of the building leaving the shingle to crash onto the ground which thankfully distracted the guards for a brief minute.
As they slowly slid down the rest of the way Jenni let go of Ugine so she could land on the ground.
"Goodbye. I'll see you later," She whispered before darting into an alley with Trixi on her heels.
As the fox Faunus watched her go he began to feel his face heat up and his stomach felt like it was in knots.
"What's going on with me?" He asked himself, while he was slowly climbing up the building, "why do I suddenly feel sick?"
But before he could figure it out he felt someone grab his hand and pull him up.
"Hey there," Adam said grinning at him.
Ugine growled and shoved the human man back, "You! What are you doing here?!"
"Ok not the greeting I was expecting. I'm just looking for Jennifer. Is she here?"
Ugine grabbed a torch that was hanging on the wall, "no she's not! And even if she was no soldiers are allowed in here. Sanctuary remember?!"
"I mean her no harm," the captain said putting his hands up in surrender.
Ugine closed the gap between them and held the flaming torch to Adam's face.
"Leave before I scar your other eye!" He snapped.
Adam used his sword the chop the torch in two. "Listen to me! I just wanted to apologize ok?! Look if Jennifer is in there tell her I'm sorry. I didn't mean to trap her."
Ugine looked up at him, "you didn't?"
"No. But it was the only thing I could think of that would save her life."
The fox Faunus felt a small bit of guilt hearing that but it quickly subsided, "fine I'll tell her if you leave. Now."
"I will. And thanks," the captain said, "she's lucky to have a good friend like you."
With that Adam sheathed his sword and left the dim tower and the bell ringer alone.
