Chapter 11

The next evening most of the villagers of Vale had come to the town square to witness the public executions.

However, none of them agreed with what was going on so they were trying to get to the prisoners to free them. Roman had anticipated this though and stationed all of his guards around the execution site, each one holding a flaming torch.

All of the of the faunus from the court of miracles, along with Adam, had been put into cages that were set up along the perimeter of a wooden platform. At the very center of the platform was Jenni, clad in a simple white cotton dress and tied to a wooden stake. Bundles of kindling lay at her feet.

"The faunus girl Jennifer has been found guilty of crimes against the church and the leaders of this kingdom. Her punishment is death!" Roman said as he read from a paper scroll detailing Jenni's crimes.

"She's done nothing wrong!" Someone shouted from the square.

"Let her go!" Shouted another.

Adam began pulling as hard as he could on the bars of his cage. He refused to let Jenni die.

Then Arch Deacon Ozpin walked out of the church to see what was going on. But as soon as he took one step outside two guards put their weapons to his neck, halting him from going further.

Roman took the flaming torch from the executioner and leaned in close to Jenni's face.

"So here we are. You stand at the brink of death, yet even now it's not too late. I can save you from the flames of this world and the next. All you need to do is say you'll be mine. So what'll it be. Me or the fire?"

The judge held the torch an inch from her face.

Jenni looked at him a moment before she spit in his face.

Judge Torchwick wiped the saliva from his cheek, "stupid girl."

He turned to the people, "this witch has refused to repent. Her soul is now bound for the domain of the god of darkness."

As Roman continued to rattle off what would become of Jenni after her death up on the roof the three gargoyles were trying to help free Ugine. The fox faunus had been chained to the columns lining of the balcony of the church with multiple chains and shackles so he had no choice but to witness the death of his friend.

"Ugi you gotta break these chains!" Cinder said desperately.

"Why bother?" Ugine muttered.

"Because Jenni and all those faunus will die if you don't get down there and help!" Charlie yelled.

Ugine hung his head sadly.

"Ugine. Aren't you gonna try and escape?" Felix asked.

"No I'm not!" Ugine snapped, "Judge Torchwick has won ok?! I lost! If I'd never left the tower none of this would've happened! Everything that's going on now is my fault!"

"That's not true!" Cinder insisted.

"Just leave me alone!" Ugine yelled.

His friends looked at each other before slowly setting the chains down and going to their perches on the balcony.

"Ok we'll leave you alone," Felix said

"After all we should you listen to us? We aren't real. We're just made of stone." Said Charlie

"We just thought you were made of something more," Cinder said.

With that the three gargoyles returned to their stone forms.

Ugine slowly raised his head up, "they're right...I can't give up."

He began pulling as hard as he could against the chains trying to break them apart.

Roman lit the kindling surrounding the stake Jenni was tied to.

"Now to send this creature back where she belongs!"

Jenni's eyes widened in horror as the flames quickly absorbed the straw and twigs and began making their way toward her.

"No!" Ugine shouted and he began to tug even harder on the chains. He was pulling so hard the stone roof the shackles were attached to began breaking apart.

Jenni began coughing as smoke filled her lungs and Roman gave her an evil smirk.

Ugine pulled as hard as he could causing the two stone columns he was chained to to crumble and the shackles fell off his arms and torso.

The fox faunus panted heavily but he knew he had no time to lose. He quickly grabbed a nearby rope and tied it off before he leaped over the balcony and slid down the roof. Just like he had done with Jenni when he helped her escape.

When he landed on the ground he ran over to the square and climbed onto the platform. He ripped the ropes off Jenni's arms and hands and cradled her limp body in his arms.

The guards began climbing up the platform to stop him but Ugine simply knocked the still burning stake over. This caused the guardsmen to jump back to avoid getting burned by the flames.

The fox faunus ran as fast as he could and climbed up the side of the church until he once again reached the balcony. He gently laid Jenni down on the stone floor.

"I claim sanctuary for her! As long as she's here I won't let anyone hurt her! You hear me?!"Ugine shouted to the crowd.

The townspeople began cheering but Roman was livid. He turned to Lt. Winchester who had been made his new captain of the guard, "Captain. Seize the cathedral."

Winchester nodded, "you heard him men! Let's go!"

Meanwhile Ugine was quickly trying to find a place to hide Jenni. He gently placed her down in his sleeping area.

"Dont worry," he said smoothing her hair out, "I won't let him take you. You're safe here."

"Glad you did the right thing Ugi," Cinder said with a nod of her stone head.

"Thanks. But it's not over yet. Roman won't give up without a fight. C'mon we have to protect Jenni."
