Chapter 10
Slowly Adam crept downstairs and pushed the door to the church open.
"Adam!" Ugine said suddenly as he hanging upside down from the doorframe.
Adam leaped back and put his hand to his chest, "are you trying to give me a heart attack?!"
The fox faunus ignored him and jumped to the floor, "I'm here to help. Jenni gave me a way to find her."
He reached into his tunic for the necklace Jenni had given him and he placed it in the former captain's hand.
Adam smiled as he held the trinket up, "perfect! Umm what is it?"
"I....don't know," Ugine admitted.
The bull faunus began studying the necklace's pendant closer, "maybe it's some kind of code? It's certainly not a language I recognize."
"When you wear this woven band. You hold the city in your hand." The other man said.
"What?"
Ugine grabbed the necklace back, "that's what Jenni told me when she gave me this. This necklace isn't a weird code it's a map of the city!"
"Ok no offense Ugine but that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
Ugine narrowed his eyes, "well excuse you but I've lived in the bell tower my whole life. I think I know a map of this city when I see one."
Adam put one hand on his hip, "well I've seen dozens of maps when I was in the army and I can tell you that this thing is not a map."
Both faunus men gave each other a cold glare until Adam sighed, "ok this is stupid. The longer we stay here arguing the less time we have to save Jenni and the other faunus. What does this...map...tell you?"
The fox faunus held up the pendant and pointed to a cross shaped bead. "This is supposed to be the church, this blue thread is the river, and this tiny bead here must be the location of the court of miracles."
Adam nodded, "ok then we just need to follow the river. Good job Ugine." He patted the shorter man on the shoulder.
"Thanks," Ugine said returning the former captain's gesture but he smacked Adam much harder on his back.
The bull faunus winced in pain and held his injured shoulder.
"Sorry." Ugine said apologetically.
Adam scoffed as he followed the other faunus down the street. "No you're not."
The two crossed the road and walked along the length of the river making sure to follow the map until Ugine stopped in his tracks.
"We're here."
Adam looked up at where they had stopped, "the cemetery....lovely...."
The fox faunus pushed the gate to the cemetery open and began walking in the grass along the rows of graves.
They hadn't been walking long when Adam suddenly stopped.
"Wait!" He called out, "let me see that necklace again."
Ugine passed it to him.
The bull faunus studied it then the large above ground grave that they were standing in front of.
"This tombstone has the same symbol as the bead on the necklace."
"What do you think it means?" Ugine asked.
The older man narrowed his good eye, "Hmm there seems to be an inscription written here. Give me a second to translate it."
As Adam began trying to decipher the writing Ugine noticed that the coffin's stone lid looked oddly loose, it didn't appear to be attached to anything.
He slowly put his fingers under the lid and pulled back. The stone slab slid off the top of the grave revealing a set of stone stairs that went deep into the ground.
"Or we could do this," Ugine shrugged slowly descending the stairs
Adam gave him a glare behind his back before he followed the fox faunus underground.
They soon found themselves deep within some kind of catacomb. The ceiling above them dripped with water due to them being below the river and the walls were lined with skulls and bones.
"Oh lovely...." Adam deadpanned, "but hey this must be kind of exciting for you huh Ugine? You finally get out and get to experience something new."
Ugine shrugged, "I don't know. Trust me I wish I got out more but right now I just want to help Jenni and the other faunus and get back home before Judge Torchwick realizes I'm gone."
The older faunus was about to open his mouth to retort but just then he heard something strange.
"Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Ugine asked.
Adam stumbled backward, "I don't know it sounded almost like..." He backed up and felt himself walk into something. He turned and found himself face to face with a walking skeleton, "....bones clacking."
The skeleton reached out and grabbed Adam before pinning his arms behind his back.
Ugine went to help his friend but he too was quickly subdued by two skeletons who had appeared at his side.
The skeleton holding the fox faunus's left arm then removed his skull revealing a perfectly normal human face beneath, albeit with some lizard scales scattered across his cheeks. The other two then removed their masks revealing their faces as well.
Ugine then realized that these "skeletons" were actually faunus wearing disguises, more then likely as a way to blend into the catacombs so they could nab anyone coming to the court of miracles.
"Well well what have we here?" A voice asked.
Both captive faunus looked up to see Sun hanging by his tail from a wooden beam that ran along the length of the ceiling of the catacombs.
"They were trying to sneak in!" One of the faunus said.
"No we weren't," Adam insisted but his words were drowned out when one of his captors tied a rag around his mouth.
"You know you shouldn't talk with your mouth full," Sun laughed jumping down.
"Listen we're trying to-" but Ugine was cut off as he was gagged as well.
Sun almost looked sad for a moment, "I hate to do this to someone of our own kind but I can't exactly let you walk out of here now that you know where our court is. Take them to the square."
With that Adam and Ugine were dragged down a long hallway by Sun's men until they came to a large opening in the catacombs.
This led them to a large room where stands selling goods and several tents were set up, almost like a market place. There were also several faunus walking around and talking.
"The court of miracles," Ugine said in amazement.
Sun gestured to his men to take their captives onto a stage while he pulled on a long rope which was connected to a bell. Everyone turned as the bell began ringing.
"Gather around everyone I've got good...noose....to share," the monkey faunus chuckled at his own joke.
Adam and Ugine then realized that strung from the top of the stage were two ropes with a large open knot tied at the bottom of each of them. They were about to be hanged!
As the faunus of the court eagerly approached the stage to watch the execution, Jenni's fox Trixi, who was sitting out near a fruit stand, quickly ran off to get her master.
Slowly the nooses were put around the necks of the captive faunus men.
"Let's see first off we have Judge Torchwick's captain of the guard and second we have his little loyal henchmen. Won't the judge miss having them around," Sun laughed.
He then walked over to a lever and was about to pull it to drop the floor out from under Adam and Ugine when suddenly a loud "stop" cut through the crowd.
Everyone turned to see Jenni pushing her way to the front.
"Sun these men aren't dangerous they're my friends! I told them to come here if they ever needed help." Jenni said as she began removing the rope from around the men's necks.
"Why didn't they say so then?!" Sun said flabbergasted.
"We tried!" Adam and Ugine yelled in unison.
Jenni rolled her eyes as she continued to free her friends, "I'm just glad you two are safe."
"Yeah but you're not," Adam said.
The wolf faunus looked confused, "what do you mean?"
Adam spoke a bit louder so everyone could hear him, "we came to warn you all that Judge Torchwick is coming at dawn with one thousand men to attack. We still have time to get everyone to safety if we hurry."
Sun clapped his hands, "you heard the man pack up your stuff everybody."
The other faunus nodded in unison and began running around to pack up their caravans and tents.
Jenni hugged the bull faunus tightly, "thank you for coming to warn us. You don't know how grateful we all are even if we don't show it."
Adam smiled until he saw Ugine out of the corner of his eye looking very sad.
"Umm well you know," Adam said clearing his throat, "we would've never gotten here if Ugine hadn't been able to read that map you gave him. So really you should be thanking him."
He pushed Jenni over to Ugine and the wolf faunus rested her hand on her friend's left cheek, "thank you Ugine."
"Yes thank you Ugine," another voice said.
The fox faunus turned toward the new voice and was horrified to see Roman there along with his soldiers.
The judge held up his hand commanding the soldiers to arrest the faunus attempting to flee the court.
Slowly Roman made his way toward Jenni, Ugine, and Adam.
"Finally after all this time I found the court of miracles. And it's all thanks to you Ugine. I knew you'd be useful to me one day."
He patted the younger man on the head.
Jenni went to help her friend but she was quickly restrained by the guards.
"There's no way he'd ever help you," Jenni spat before baring her fangs and letting out a low growl.
Roman chuckled darkly as he walked past her to face Adam.
"And look what else we have here. Our former captain Adam Taurus back from the dead. Well I shall fix that."
He then made his way to the front of the group of captive faunus.
"There's going to be a little bonfire in the square tomorrow and you're all invited to come."
Everyone looked horrified as the judge continued to circle them before he made his way back to Jenni.
"And you my dear," he said cupping her face in his hand, "will be the guest of honor."
Jenni looked down at the judge's wrist and before he could let go of her she sank her teeth into his hand and bit down hard.
Roman let out a shout of pain and pulled his hand away. The bite wasn't deep but it had drawn a bit of blood.
"Foolish creature," he said walking away, "now lock them up!"
His soldiers nodded and went to carry out his orders.
Ugine then grabbed the edge of his master's cloak, "sir please...you can't do this...."
Roman merely scoffed and yanked the fabric out of the faunus's hands.
"And lock him up in the bell tower and make sure he stays there."
Ugine fell to the floor and began to cry as the soldiers bound his hands behind his back. His friends were going to die and he felt that it was all his fault.
