Chapter 8
"Hold still!" Perrin tightened her grip on Diana's face. The makeup brush tickled Diana's face. She had been squirming for the past half-hour, thwarting Perrin's efforts to make her look 'amazing'.
"Are you almost done?" Diana asked for only the hundredth time.
"Almost." Perrin had the handle of a makeup brush balanced between her teeth, and an intense look of concentration on her face as she focused on plucking Diana's eyebrows.
"Ow. Ow, ow, ow!" Diana mumbled every few seconds, wincing. She hadn't planned on dressing up today, but Perrin had insisted she had to. She had everything already planned out, that they were going to a really cool Halloween party.
"Open up." Perrin instructed her, poking her cheek. She handed Diana a pair of fake teeth with fangs. "Put these on, and then you can look."
Diana popped them in, wincing as the abrasive plastic rubbed against her tender gums. Slowly she turned around. Her eyes were lined with liquid, black eyeliner, making them appear larger and darker. Her skin was almost chalk white, giving off a ghostly appearance. Her lips were a mix of black and red, with red dripping down her jaw to look like blood. She adjusted the itchy black wig on her head.
Now she was in full costume, and even with her cast, she actually realized she pulled it off.
Fumbling around, Perrin was doing some last minute makeup touch ups to herself. She was going as rocker-chick. Using temporary dye, she had dyed her hair bright pink. She added a final coat of lip gloss over her electric pink lips. "Come on Diana. Stop staring."
"But I wasn't..."
"Come on! We're gonna be late!"
It seemed as though Perrin had already forgotten about Diana's broken leg. She hobbled as fast as she could with her crutches.
On the way to the party, Diana stared aimlessly out of the window. "Diana, this party is going to be good for you. You can party a little, meet new guys, loosen up a bit."
"Yeah, maybe." Diana sighed softly.

"Alright, I'll be close by if you need me. Go have fun." Perrin told Diana as they entered the house. Immediately the temperature changed from cold, to suffocatingly warm. The air was thick with smoke. Coughing violently, Diana clutched a hand to her chest. A passing guy smirked at her, lifted a cigarette to his mouth, and blew the smoke directly at her. She resisted the urge to give him a good smack in the jaw, and sent him a glare.
As she moved further in, the more crowded it became. People were dancing way to close together in what appeared to be the living room. Loud music made her head pound, and she soon resorted to poking people with her crutches to make them move out of her way.
As she turned the corner she came upon a couple with their faces glued together. She moved away, disgusted, when something caught her eye; a familiar head of blonde curls. Was that Christine? Because that obviously wasn't Jason kissing her!
Ignoring the fact that the blonde was determined to play the field, Diana made her way to the kitchen. A large punch bowl was filled with an orange liquid with black, plastic spiders floating in it. Fake cobweb material had been stretched across everything in sight.
Reaching into a cooler for an unopened beer, she turned back around and bumped into someone. "Watch where you're going!" A girl dressed in a very low-cut and revealing top, and a short skirt snapped. Diana wasn't sure what exactly she was dressed up as. A hooker? Stripper? Thick makeup coated her face, distorting her features.
"I could say the same to you!"
The girl gasped, obviously not expecting Diana to respond like that. "Do you even know who you're talking to?!" She snarled, making herself look even more unattractive.
"Do I look like I care?" Diana countered. This little brat wasn't just going to mow her over. She has a backbone and a voice. Maybe she should just solve this like a vampire would; sinking her teeth into her victim's neck, and draining all the poisonous blood from her body.
"Hey, babe." Someone came up behind the little brat and pulled her close. "Let it go." Diana heard the trashy girl mumble-complain as she was lead off.
Using a nearby bottle opener, she popped the top off of her beer. Raising the bottle to her lips, she took a long swig. The cool liquid burned the back of her throat. She winced. She hadn't had a beer since high school. Back then it was disgusting, but it seemed like a good way to solve her problems. But as she soon learned, she couldn't use alcohol to try to evade or forget about her problems because they always caught up to her. It was a temporary solution for a permanent problem.
She took a another sip from the bottle, now about half-way through it. It was going to be a long night.
A tall, dark, and muscular guy entered the room, and started filling two red solo cups with the orange punch. He had lipstick stains all over his face and halfway down his bare chest. Diana turned her head away in disgust. Some people were just so desperate to get some action.
Something in Diana made her turn back around, and she was glad she did. Christine, dressed as a cat, came up behind the guy and wrapped her arms around his torso. Her blonde curls were a ratty mess, and the black on her nose and cheeks had been smeared all over her face. She then pushed said guy against a wall and began making out with him.
Now obviously this was gross, but what had really caught Diana's attention was a familiar head of dark hair, and bright blue eyes across the hall from them.
Moving as fast as her crutches would allow, she made her way over to Jason. Trying desperately to keep him from seeing the scene behind her, she struck up a conversation with him. "Nice party isn't it? Here, have a beer."
Jason stared at her for about thirty seconds, not saying a word. Cautiously, he took the drink from her hand, nodding appreciatively. "Great party." He mumbled, the sarcasm in his tone evident. Tipping his head back, he swallowed the remaining contents of the bottle. "Have you seen Christine?"
"Who? Christine? Oh, no! Did she come tonight?" Diana feigned her knowledge of the 'cheater's' whereabouts.
"Yeah, she went to get us drinks. But that was like an hour ago. I'm worried some guy is trying to take advantage of her or something."
"Really?" Diana fake laughed, trying to seem nonchalant. "I'm sure she's fine. You know you and I should catch up. We should definitely catch up." She repeated a sentence and started to feel the effects of the alcohol as her brain buzzed.
"Yeah, maybe some other time. I should really go look for her." He kept trying to peer over Diana's shoulder, searching the crowd for his 'girlfriend.' His eyes showed evident concern and eagerness. "Just move, okay? We can talk another time. I'm really worried." Jason bit out, obviously beyond annoyed with her at this point.
Diana didn't want to break his heart. And in theory, she wasn't actually the person doing it. But in all honesty, Jason didn't deserve this, he deserved the truth.
Sliding out of his way, Christine and the stranger were now within his view. His girlfriend, sucking face with a random guy.
The way he reacted wasn't completely what Diana had expected. His expression went from shocked, to angry, to betrayed, and finally ended with a stony expression on his face.
Diana had never seen this expression before. The lack of emotion in his face hit her square in the gut. Without a word, he stalked towards the front door. "Jason?" Diana yelled breathlessly. "Jason, wait!"
She wove her way through the crowd of people, getting bumped and jostled every which way. Just as she reached the door, it was slammed in her face. Taking a deep breath, she bit down on the inside of her cheek, and opened the door. Following the dark figure striding away, she yelled again.
This time, Jason turned around. His mouth was set in a hard line, and his eyes were a cold ice-blue. "What?" He spat.
Diana was taken aback. "Where are you.."
"Did you know?" He interrupted. "Did you know about that the whole time?"
"Know about what?"
"Don't play dumb with me, Diana. How could you know, and not tell me? I thought we were friends?!"
More than friends actually.
The pain in his voice cut right into her chest. He felt betrayed. By her. "Jason, I didn't how to..."
"Don't bother." He growled. "I'm done."
With that he walked away, and Diana was left to wonder if maybe the doctor's decision to withhold information from him, hadn't been the best idea, after all.
