HS P 10
Gus POV:
We were in class when my phone rang. "Mr. Waters put it on speaker." My teacher kindly said. I put it on speaker.
"Hazel I'm in class and your on speaker what's wrong?"
"Augustus." She said. I could here panic in her voice. "It's an emergency."
"Oh God. Where are you?" I asked.
"Um... outside the.. language room." I can hear her breathing.
"Alright I'm on my way."
"Okay. Hurry. I can see black dots." She said. I hung up the phone and hopped up.
"Mr. Waters! You can't just leave!" Mrs. Roberts said.
"Well my girlfriend has one fully working lung and she sees black dots. That's not good. She could be suffocating right now for all I know." I said desperately.
"Oh okay. Go on." I ran out of the classroom and to Hazel as fast as I could with my prosthetic leg. I found her sitting on the ground breathing deeply. I looked across the hall and saw the group of girl laughing at her. What B*****.
"Hazel!" I said. She looked up.
"Gus. I can see dots and my head hurts and my lungs hurt. I don't think the tanks working. Either that or it's all those stairs." She said.
"Do you need 911?" I asked. She nodded. I hooked up and knocked on the teachers door.
"Why hello Mr. Waters. Would you know where Ms. Lancaster may be?" Mr. Julius, the nicest teacher, asked.
"Yes I do. She's right outside here." I said. She had her hand pressed to her head. Mr. Julius looked at her.
"Oh my." He said. He put a hand to his heart.
"Augustus! Hurry I can't breathe that well right now!!" She yelled.
"Oh ya! Mr. Julius! Call 911! Right. Now!" I said. He nodded and called. I ran back to Hazel. I pulled her head down into my lap.
"Wow Hazel Grace. Hospital two times in two weeks! Don't pass out." I said.
"The doctors said this would happen. More hospital visits. I-" I shushed her.
"Shh. Focus on breathing." I told her. I pulled her hat off and stroked her hair.
"Mr. Waters they're on there way." Mr. Julius said. "Could you get her down to first level?" I nodded. "Good. You can take the teacher elevator." I stared at him.
"Could you maybe talk to Mr. Brown and ask if us cancer kids with disabilities can use this elevator? It would help Hazel with her lungs, Isaac with his blindness, and me with my leg." I asked.
"Oh yes. I will speak with him about that." I picked up Hazel bridal style. She wrapped her arms around my neck. Mr. Julius carries Philip. We got into the elevator.
—-line break—-
The ambulance was here and took her from my arms. I watched as they put her on a stretcher and out her in the ambulance. I climbed in after her. They took her cannula out and put a breathing mask on. I stroked her hair like she did for me when I was in the ambulance. The paramedic looked at me.
"Name and symptoms?" She asked.
"Name: Hazel Lancaster and Symptoms: trouble breathing, lungs hurt, head hurt, and black spots in vision." I told her.
"We had hazel two weeks ago. Didn't we?" She asked. I nodded.
"We have no elevators and a lot of stairs so this happens more often than it should." I explained. "I talked to the teacher and asked if he'd talk to the principle about letting us use the teacher elevator. He said he would."
I looked at hazel to see her arm flying around.
"What is it?"
"Your hand. I want to hold it." So I grabbed her hand.
That's a wrap. I am on a roll!
