chapter seven: taehyung's gang friend

Taehyung walked down the busy streets of Seoul on his way home from school, the sky was a blinding blue colour as the sun fought against the clouds and the cool wind carded its fingers through his red hair. He sighed softly, he felt the sun illuminate his face like a pool of liquid gold. He turned the corner to a lonely alleyway that got him to his home quicker and checked his watch to see the time. 3:45 pm. It always felt as if the sun skipped this particular alleyway, it was dark and cold and it seemed dangerous. Not many people would turn into this abyss of a street when everywhere else was shrouded in light. But Taehyung didn't like to waste time and if there was a way to get to his house quicker then he'd take it.

Recently, he'd been feeling far more stressed than usual and was beginning to lose sleep more often than he would've liked. Taehyung was now getting the same dreams of the same people every. damn. night. He had tried to shake it off the first couple of times, passing it off as people he'd seen walking down the street or something like that. The brain didn't have the capabilities to come up with an entirely new face in your mind's eye. So, Taehyung must've seen them briefly before.

Yet, the people in his dreams always felt oddly familiar and the detail in their faces was far too specific to be some memory of some random person he saw on the street presenting itself.

So, to put it simply, Taehyung was stressed. He was also beginning to think he was crazy. The people in his dreams always said the same words to him, "Find me, help me."

Taehyung was continually lost in thought, walking down the alleyway with nothing but also everything on his mind all at once. He hadn't even noticed he had bumped into somebody until they said something. Or rather, yelled something.

"Hey, boy!" A man grunted, he looked incredibly angry and Taehyung almost asked the man who the fuck kicked his dog. "You better watch where the fuck you're going huh!"

Taehyung looked at the man's face and everything about him was average and bland apart from the triangle tattoo on the left side of his face, just under his eye. It was familiar, he'd seen it on the news many times. It was a gang symbol, belonging to a group of individuals called the "Triad", a dumb name if you asked him.

'He has to be even dumber to put such a recognizable tattoo on his fucking face.' Taehyung thought.

"What the hell did you just say?" The man barked, taking a step closer to Taehyung, who had just now begun to take his hands out of his pockets.

"I said, 'Sorry for bumping into you, bye!'" Taehyung swung himself in the opposite direction tried to walk away before he felt a rough hand grab his shoulder, turning him back towards the gang member.

"No, I know what you're scrawny ass said. You think I'm dumb huh?" The gang member sneered, pulling out a pocket knife and waving it towards Taehyung's face. "We'll see who's really dumb when I scoop out your brain through your nose!"

The man tackled Taehyung to the ground, the boy's head hitting the pavement with a thick thump. All the air in Taehyung's lungs seems to vanish as the man sits on his chest, he lifts his arms to keep the man away from him. The gang member pins Taehyung's arms together and raises them over his head and Taehyung feels as if he's about to throw up. Everything is happening so suddenly that he barely had any time to think, there isn't enough air getting to his lungs with the pressure he feels on his chest yet at the same time he hyperventilates. The man laughs as Taehyung tries to struggle out of his grip and when the man brings the knife to his face Taehyung feels sick to his stomach.

"Help!" Taehyung yells, his legs frail uselessly. "Help me, please!"

The gang member coos, "No one can hear you, boy. Look around, we're all alone here. You think someone's gonna come to your rescue?"

"Come on man, I'm sorry okay?" Taehyung wheezes, "Just let me go, please."

"Mhm, No can do kiddo." The man says as if he was actually thinking about it. "You've seen my face now, I can't have you reporting me to the police now can I?"

The man smiles and his eyes fog in excitement as he brings the knife close to Taehyung's neck. Taehyung could feel the cold blade pressing into his skin and he suddenly feels his mind go blank.

He was now in a dark room, sitting in a brown leather chair in front of a TV screen the size of a bedroom wall. He watched as everything began to move in slow motion and in reverse. The gang member stood up off of him and "screen Taehyung" got up as well. The two began to walk away from each other and Taehyung could see the moment they bumped into each other play in reverse before the man was gone and Taehyung was just around the corner of the dark alleyway.

Then he was abruptly pushed forward through the screen and back to the front of his mind. He stood at the entrance of the alleyway, his breath still heaved from the pressure that was once there, he put his hand against his neck and took a few steps back before leaning against the wall next to the alleyway entrance. What the hell was that? Did the thing with that gang member even happen at all? How did he get back to the beginning of the alleyway? Was the gang member even real? Taehyung had the sudden urge to check his watch, lifting his arm up to look at the time. 3:45 pm.

'Okay,' Taehyung thought, 'That's weird. That's suspicious.'

Just then, someone came out of the alleyway and Taehyung moved quickly to hide behind the nearby dumpster, watching as the man walked out of the alleyway. It was that fucking gang member, Taehyung could tell by the triangle tattoo and the bump in his front pocket that resembled a knife. Oh my god.

What the hell happened? It was as if he saw everything before it happened and now that the man had left the alley was Taehyung safe to leave? Had he just seen what would've happened if he turned down the alleyway at 3:45 pm before it even happened? Taehyung checked his watch again, 3:47 pm. It should be safe now and the gang member was surely gone. Taehyung decided not to take any sort of chance, standing up from behind the dumpster and running down the alleyway towards his house.

He unlocked the door to his home and stepped inside. His parents weren't home yet and they wouldn't be until about 5 pm. Taehyung decided to retire to his room, his head hurt and he was too tired to do anything other than lay in bed. Trudging up the stairs, he thought back to all the dreams he'd been having recently. Was that connected to whatever the hell Taehyung had experienced just now? Was he going crazy and just made all that up in his head?

Taehyung squinted his eyes and scratched his head as he walked into his bedroom, changing out of his school clothes before plopping himself into his bed and wrapping himself in his blankets. His head felt fuzzy and he thought maybe it'd be good for him to take a nap.

But Taehyung couldn't even catch a break during his nap either.

He dreamt of those people again, a boy in particular. He had silver hair that blew in the wind and kind eyes that shined when he smiled. The boy was running down the hallway of some building and Taehyung rushed to follow him, he's never dreamt of only one person before. This had to mean something right? Taehyung followed the boy as he turned the corner, feeling his muscles ache and strain as he moved and he felt the pressing urge to run and hide, to not let anyone see what was happening to him. Is he feeling what the boy was feeling? The boy turned a corner and ran to a door that said "Janitor's Room" at the end of the hallway.

Taehyung slipped into the room as the boy slammed the door and slid to the floor. His hands were shaking and the boy began to hyperventilate much as Taehyung had when he was in the alleyways. Taehyung watched and slowly made his way around the boy to face him. The boy looked at his arms in horror as the skin muscle and bone began to twist and move underneath his skin. His teeth were harshly biting against his lips to keep the whimpers of fright and pain from escaping. Taehyung observed in just as much fear as the boy's arms had begun to morph and shift, resembling crab pinchers.

"What the fuck." The boy whispered in a way that felt painful and scared, here this boy was, all alone in this janitor closet and all Taehyung could do was watch. He wanted to help, he wanted to find him.

Taehyung looked around, looking for any clues as to where they were. There was a whiteboard on the wall, penned and inked words were everywhere. Taehyung looked along the whiteboard, reading all the word before he found the date written in the top right corner.

October 27th 2020

'That's tomorrow!' Taehyung thought, he looked back when he heard the boy whimper again and watched as a small tear fell down his face as the boy stared down at his crab arms.

"It's okay, I'm gonna find you tomorrow," Taehyung whispered, he knew the boy wouldn't hear him but he couldn't help but give him words of encouragement. "Weird things have been happening to me too, we're gonna figure it out together."

The boy seemed to have calmed down as he tried to control his breathing and watched as his left arm began to morph back into its original form. The boy smiled and Taehyung grinned along with him.

There was a knock on the door and the two boys jumped at the sound.

"Namjoon?" A soft voice spoke, knocking on the door gently, "Are you alright?"

"Uhm, I'm fine Jisoo! Don't worry about me!" The boy said awkwardly and Taehyung almost laughed, slapping a hand over his mouth.

"But-" Jisoo was interupted by a voice also behind the door, there was soft murmuring before silence and Jisoo continued. "Okay Namjoon, I'll meet you back at the group. Don't get lost."

"Okay!" Namjoon replied shakily, looking back at his left crab arm and slapping it lightly, "Change back you idiot!"

The doorknob jiggled as someone place keys into the hole and Namjoon looked up in alarm before scurrying the back of the small room and frantically looking around before sticking his crab arm in a mop bucket. His face grimaced at the smell and Taehyung watched in disgust.

'That's fucking nasty.' Taehyung said aloud into the room, still unheard by the boy on the floor.

The door opens and a figure wearing a janitor's uniform comes in and closes the door. They have red hair and-

oh my god it's Taehyung.

"Hey there!" Janitor Taehyung waves and dream Taehyung looks on in awe.

Taehyung looks at the Janitor uniform he had on, reading the name tag. "Ji-Na".

'Ah, so I stole the uniform.' Taehyung thought, he looked at the print on the left side of his unifrom, reading the words "Coex Aquarium".

Perfect! That aquarium isn't too far from his house! He'd be able to get there.

Now all he needed was the time.

He looked around the room before finding a clock. 5:45 pm.

Coex Aquarium, October 27th, 5:45 pm. He'll be sure to make it.

And if the fact that Taehyung is standing there in the Janitor's room in real life, wearing a uniform that doesn't belong to him. It looks like things turn out just fine.
