Chapter 5
Apparently, the next day all the mentors must've told the tributes to switch it up, because not one were with their alliance from yesterday. I must not have been listening when our mentors told us that. Oops.
Leo and I decided to drop Calypso and Rachel. Although they were nice, they weren't really that useful for this. All they could do is camouflage and find edible vegetation. Things Leo and I can do well along with other things.
Okay so I was wrong about everyone being with different people. The careers were still stuck together, watching the other tributes. It seemed that the two from 5 and the two from 8 were sticking together as well. Leo had already gone to find some new allies, leaving me alone surrounded by people who were already working together. About three quarters of the tributes were with their district partner, not including me.
I watched Leo walk up to the tributes from District 9 and start chatting with them. They both looked very tough and mean. The girl was slightly taller than the boy with a bulky muscular build and brown hair that went down to the middle of her back in a ponytail. The boy had long-ish white-blond hair that curled around his ears and fell in wisps across his forehead. I could go over there, but those two scare me. They've both been eyed by the career pack at all times since training began. I saw two other groups of two; the pairs from 5 and 8. The ones from 5 were really tough looking and have been eyed by the careers since the first moment of training. And it didn't look like either were interested in an alliance. So I went with District 8.
I found them at the edible bug station, where they quietly conversed with eachother. They seemed to not notice when I walked up to them. "Hi. Nico? Hazel?" I say, not knowing how I remembered their names.
they lifted their heads and looked at me.
"Sydney, right?" Says Nico. He has pale olive skin with dark circles around his eyes. His eyes were the color of obsidian and his hair was pitch shadow black. He wore a skull ring on his finger. He was skinny, but muscular.
"Yeah." I nod.
Hazel shot a quick smile at me. She had dark skin with cinnamon toast colored curls and gold eyes.
"what are you good for?" Asks Nico softly.
"Umm... A little bit of everything, I guess. Except archery. I can never seem to get it to work." I tell them.
"I'll help you." Says Hazel, taking me by the arm and pulling me to the archery station.
We work with my bow and arrow skills for a while. I almost have it when it's time for lunch.
in the line, Leo meets up with me to discuss allies.
"The two from District 9 are gonna team up with us. Who'd you get?"
"I think I have the two from 8. I'm not sure though." I say, watching Nico and Hazel out of the corner of my eye.
"Okay. At least we have 9." He says, pointing over to the pair from District 9.
"could ya tell me about them?" I ask, not really wanting to talk to the two tough kids myself.
"Their names are Dallas and Clarrisse." Leo begins. "They're both really tough and are experts with knives. The careers wanted them, but they declined."
"Don't they both have their other alliances. You know, Dallas and those other guys-"
"Their mentor told them to get allies, but to keep it small." he replied.
"okay. Tell me more." I have the strangest sense that I know about these people. But I barely remembered their names.
"Dallas is convinced that the people in charge of this stuff rigged it do he'd get chosen because he doesn't really like doing stuff inside the confines of the rules. And Clarrisse' dad has trained her to be rough and rumble her whole life."
Thats weird. I somehow knew half of that stuff.
