Chapter 20 ~ Despair
This chapter is dedicated to Rick Riordan and demigods everywhere in honor of Annabeth's 22 birthday. Love you wise girl!!!
Newt (from the Maze Runner)
I pace back and forth, trying to deny what I've seen. "It's not real," I mutter to myself, "it's not real, it's not real, it's not real."
"Newt-" Minho's voice breaks the tension. "You can't change it. He's gone."
"HE'S NOT BLOODY DEAD!" I scream at my friend. "HE CAN'T BE DEAD, OKAY? HE CAN'T!"
Minho grips my shoulders. "Newt, you have to calm down. Thomas wouldn't have wanted you to react like this."
I pull away from him and punch the wall. Then I curse profanely. "Bloody hell, that hurt." Just like that, my fight is gone. Minho is right, Tommy would've expected me to be mature. But I can't help thinking...
"It should've been me," I whisper. "It's my fault."
"Newt, look at me," Minho commands, in a voice so sharp that I have to obey. My eyes meet his, and I see that he's in just as much pain as I am. I swear I see a tear roll down his cheek. "Thomas chose this. Because he cared too much about you to let you die. He died a noble death, and he went down fighting. I forbid you from blaming yourself."
"What did he say to you?" I ask. "When you went to talk to him?"
I had been unable to face Tommy after what he did for me. Now I regretted not saying goodbye.
"He made me promise that I'd take care of you."
I give up on trying to hold back my tears. As I sink to the ground, sobbing, Minho pulls me up. Then he does something he's never done before. He hugs me. And I hug him back, because I know he needs this just as much as I do.
Thalia Grace
"Percy, can I come in?" I call softly. He hasn't left his apartment since Annabeth and Luke got together.
"Go away," he replies.
"It would help if you talked about it, you know."
"No it wouldn't."
"I'm coming in whether you like it or not." I know that there's no lock on his door, so I open it and walk in. The apartment is a mess. I notice that every picture of him and Annabeth has been destroyed. Most of them are gone, and the one that's left has cracked glass and is laying on the floor.
Percy is slumped on his mattress in one corner of the room. He looks up when I come in, and the sight of him brings tears to my eyes. His face is haggard, with bags under his eyes and scruffy hair growing on his chin that proves he hasn't shaved. His hair is a tangled mess. His eyes are red from crying.
"What do you want?" he asks. "Nothing you can say will change anything."
"Percy, you have to be sensible. Annabeth wouldn't-"
"Don't you dare defend her." His voice is dangerous.
"Annabeth doesn't-"
"Get out." There is a threat in his voice, and I really believe that he's devastated enough to do something rash. So I leave. But I stop in the doorframe.
"Percy, I'm going to leave, but hear me out. Annabeth loves you. I knew she loved you from the first time I saw you two together. And Annabeth doesn't go back on her word. Ever. So there is no way that she's telling Luke the truth. She's up to something, Percy, I know she is. So... give her a chance, okay?"
"Leave," he says. So I go, and I can only hope that he'll consider my words.
Edward Cullen
My daughter is dead. And my wife is dying.
"Bella, please," I beg, "you have to hold on."
But she is weak, and I don't know if she can. After Renesmee was killed, she began to decline. Alice will not speak of what she has foreseen.
"What have I got to live for?" Bella whispers. "Renesmee is dead. Jake is doomed. And you-" she chokes back a sob. "I love you, I really do. But I can't go on."
"Bella," I say urgently, "you told me you wanted to live forever with me. You sacrificed your freedom to be with me. You can't give up now."
She can't even lift her head. "Kiss me," she says.
I lean down to kiss my wife. She kisses me back with desperation. Like it's the last time she'll ever be able to. Then, all of a sudden, she stops.
When I pull away, I see that she is still. "No-" I gasp. "Bella-"
But she does not respond. Then I turn and run. Carlisle tries to stop me, but in my rage I am more powerful than ever. I run through the woods until I get to a clearing. Then I sink to the ground and weep.
All I can see is her still body, her dark hair fanned out around her face. I cannot live with myself, not after this. I don't care what it takes; I will go to the Volturi. I hope Aro kills me himself.
Foaly
Holly and Artemis, both dead. I can hardly believe it. I was prepared for Holly's because she told me she wanted to help Artemis get home. But Artemis Fowl the Second? Dead?
He cheated death once. But I did not save any DNA, because it was incriminating. This time, there's no way to bring him back. Calliope has tried to comfort me, but she is wasting her time.
I want to avenge their deaths. So I decide there's only one thing to do. I dial the number and wait for him to pick up.
"What do you want?" he demands.
"Mulch? It's Foaly. I need your help."
Edmund Pevensie
"Come with me, son of Adam," whispers the witch inside my head. "Tonight I will rise from the pit. You can rule by my side. Accept my offer. There is nothing to hold you back."
I glance across the table at Peter. "Do you hear that?"
"Don't start, Edmund. How can you possibly think of pranks at a time like this? Lucy is dead."
"I wasn't joking! I really heard something!"
"Pray tell, what did you hear?" my brother asks mockingly.
I'm fed up with him. "I heard the white witch," I say, wanting to see his reaction.
Peter stands up and slams his hands down onto the table. "Go to your room, you stupid, insolent child!"
"You can't tell me what-"
"Go to your room, or it won't be yours for much longer!"
I wordlessly head for the stairs. She's right, I think, there's nothing to hold me back.
Tobias Eaton
Peter had better hope he dies in that arena. If he comes out alive, I will personally see to it that he dies a brutal death. First he kills Tris, and now he kills this completely innocent girl who he just freaking tried to rape?
Calm down, I tell myself. You're losing it.
Unable to control my rage any longer, I stand up from the couch.
"Four-" Christina and Zeke protest at the same time.
"Leave me alone," I growl, and I stalk off to my room. But when I reach it, any anger I felt is gone. All that's left is despair, eating away at my mind, waiting to take over my life.
