Chapter 1 ~ The Apple

Annabeth Chase
Reaping day. Those words echo through my head as I slide out of bed. I pull on a dirty sweatshirt and the jeans I wore yesterday. I don't bother to brush my hair, but pull it into a messy bun.
I tiptoe down the stairs, trying not to wake my father and brother. It's only six o'clock, and they both need their sleep. As I'm opening the front door, I realize I left my phone upstairs. Oh, well. I'll be back before they wake up anyway.
I slip out the door and head towards the lake. Why the lake? Percy will be there. He's my best friend, and my boyfriend. We've only been dating for about two years, but we were friends long before that.
By now I can just make out Percy's skimpy frame silhouetted against the sunrise. I worry about him a lot. His mom kicked him out when he turned eighteen, and he never found a real job. He sometimes runs errands or does yard work for a neighbor, but that money pays the rent on his tiny, one room apartment.
He barely eats, and he keeps losing more and more weight. I tried to give him some money one time, but he said he didn't want charity. I invite him to dinner as much as possible, just to make sure he eats. I think sometimes he goes more than a week without eating.
I start jogging toward him. "Hey, Seaweed Brain!" I call. He turns towards me, and I can see his grin from fifteen feet away. But soon his smile fades into a grim expression, and so does mine.
I'm really worried about the games, and I know he is too. "Percy, what if...." He cuts me off by smashing his lips against mine.
"Shhhhh," he whispers into my ear, "Nothing is going to happen. We'll be fine."
I hope he doesn't see the tears building up in my eyes. "We have to consider the possibility that...." I burst into tears. He wraps his arms around me.
"Annabeth, your name is only in there once. The chance you'll be picked is one in a million."
"But what about you?" The truth is, I couldn't care less about me. He's the one I'm worried about.
"Don't worry about me!"
But I couldn't stop worrying about him. He was weak, and there would be trained warriors in that arena. He wouldn't stand a chance!
"Face the facts, Percy! You know you couldn't win. Maybe if you were stronger you would have a chance, but even then only a slim one. I mean, look what happened to Bianca!"
Last year's tributes from District 1 were a girl Bianca DiAngelo and some crazy kid named Octavian. He died on the first day. Someone snuck up on him while he was murdering a teddy bear.
Bianca was a hunter. Once she got her hands on a bow, nothing could stop her. She was one if the last three.
The other two were a brother and sister from District 9 named Peter and Susan Pevensie.
One day Bianca shot Susan through the heart and killed her. She didn't know that Peter was watching from a distance, and he followed her. He cut off her head while she was sleeping that night.
Chiron is District 1's only victor. He trains some of the younger kids, and he mentors the tributes.
Percy sighs. "But I'm not like Bianca. She had motivation. Something to keep her going." I know he's talking about Nico, Bianca's little brother. He ran away after she died, and he hasn't been seen since.
"Don't you get it?" He continues, "It won't matter if I'm reaped! It won't matter if I die in the games! You've seen the way my mom treats me! No one needs me."
His words shock me. How could he think that? Just because his mom kicked him out doesn't mean he's worthless. So I do the only logical thing. I pull him closer to me and I kiss him. And then, so quietly that no one but him could ever hear it, I whisper three words.
"I need you." I can tell how much those three little words affect him. I can see the tears in his eyes. I can hear the change in his tone when he speaks again. "I love you, Wise Girl."
I smile at his nickname for me. It's hard to think of a time when we weren't "Seaweed Brain and Wise Girl." I see him smile too, and it makes me happy.
Because this isn't the fake smile he plasters on his face when he doesn't want me to know he's having a hard time. This is a real, genuinely happy smile. I realize I haven't seen that smile in a long time, and I've missed it.
He kisses me again, and I savour it. I want it to last forever, because it could be the last one we ever get. I pull away to look at my watch, and make a startling realization.
"Damn!" I yelp, a little too loudly. Percy chuckles at this, but I don't know why. "Percy, I really have to go! We've been here for almost three hours! Dad and Magnus must be wondering where I am!"
I kiss him on the cheek and turn to go. Ive only gone about ten feet when I hear him call my name. I turn to him, and see that he's holding a round object in his hand. "Catch!" He yells, and throws it to me.
He loves to waste my time. I grab the object and examine it. A shiny, red apple. My mouth drops open, and then I notice that Percy is kneeling in front of me. I try to speak, but I can't make the words come. I'm not really sure what I would say anyway.
"Annabeth, you are the smartest, funniest, most beautiful person I know. Just being around you makes me the happiest man alive. I love you more than anything or anyone else in the world. So will you, Annabeth Chase, do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
I stand there like an idiot, of course, and say nothing. Finally, I get my mouth to work. "Percy, I....I don't know what to say!"
His grin widens. "A yes would be nice. But I mean, if you're not ready..."
So I give him the obvious answer. "Yes! Yes! A million times seven hundred thirty-five thousand two hundred sixty-four times yes!"
He laughs. "You know the answer to that, don't you?"
I roll my eyes. "It's easy, Seaweed Brain. The answer is seven hundred thirty-five thousand two hundred sixty-four million!"
Percy groans that cute way he always does when I annoy him. "I didn't ask for the answer, just if you knew it!"
My watch says 8:55. "Look, I'd love to stay and chat about math, but the reaping is at eleven! I really need to get home and change!"
He nods. "I'll come for lunch at twelve. We can talk more then." I agree and sprint back towards home.

So what do you think? I had to do the Percabeth proposal cuz you know...... Percabeth! In case you didn't get it - in ancient Greece if a boy tossed an apple to a girl it meant he was proposing to her. Also the octavian thing- lol. Oh and a dam joke reference cuz thats like my favorite part of the series. Comment who's POV you want for the next chapter and plz vote!
