When the sun rises, I'm sitting on the window sill, dangling my legs in the open air. Could it only have been three sunrises ago that I was home? It feels like a lifetime. I've changed from a naive, carefree girl into a cautious, more worldly woman. All in three days. I'd give anything to be the old Lynx. Or would I? I would of never met had the opportunity to do something with my life other then a street theif. I might never have left Preiston. I wouldn't of met Briss, sweet and naive, or Kaone, the fiery bossy girl with a sensitive side. I wouldn't of met Derrin. Maybe it's for the best that I've changed. Even if I die, I'm going to be able to say that I lived my life to the fullest. Not many people can claim the same.

"Lady Lynx! What in the goodness name are you doing!" Malikah shrieks from behind me, making me flinch.

"You could fall!"

I look back at her over my shoulder and laugh. I would never fall. I can climb anything.

But to keep Malikah happy, I swing my legs over the edge and slide back into the room.

"Goodness girl! Do you have a death wish!? Anyway, Master Fynn requests you and the other girls to eat quickly, and then come to the dining room for your first lessons." She says, flustered. I nod, as I push the hair out of my eyes.

"Fine. But if I have to wear a dress, I'm going to kill somebody." I mutter. Malikah giggles.

"I'll hide all the dangerous and sharp weapons milady." She laughs. Then she tosses me my clothes and exits the room, humming a cheerful tune to herself.
What the heck made her so happy!?

The dress isn't actually too bad. It's not as bad as last nights anyway. I don't have to wear a corset. It's a dark purple number, with sleeves that only go down to my elbows and a long flowing skirt. I don't mind it too much. For a dress anyway. All dresses should burn in a fiery furnace.
But I do refuse to put on the 6' inch heels that Gai has put with the outfit. Stupid Gai-I'll go barefoot. I quickly scarf down a massive breakfast in bed, and make my way to the dining hall, where Kaone already sits, her grey eyes cold. She sighs when she sees me.

"What!?" I protest defensively.

"You didn't tie the bow." She sighs again. I look down to see two white straps hanging down by my waist.
Why do dresses need bows anyway!?
Kaone huffs and walks behind me. Her nimble fingers flawlessly gather the ribbons, and tie them into a perfect bow behind me.

"Thank you." I mutter reluctantly. She just rolls her eyes and takes her seat again.
Maybe she isn't evil spawn after all.

"Now where is the other one? The ginger?" Gai says in annoyance.
Just then Briss races into the grand hall, hair flying and panting heavily. She looks around guiltily, and tries to swallow all the food that is crammed into her mouth.

"Thank you for gracing us with your presence Lady Briss." Gai angrily shoots at her. Briss flushes and sits next to me. I hide a smile behind my hand-for once it's not me.

"Today, you are officially in training. Your itinerary looks like this.
From 9 till 11:30, you will be in book lessons. How to read and such. 11:30 until 12:30 you will eat lunch with your tutors. By 1 you will start on a brisk run. You will be doing lots of excersize in the following days. Later will be sit ups, push ups, and jumping jacks. After that you will learn how to cook and sew. Then will be dinner and bed. You will repeat that everyday unless I say otherwise." Gai finishes with a grand gesture with his hands. I barely hide my groan.

This is going to be a long day.

After the morning, I was ready to petition that lessons should be considered as a deadly weapon. It literally almost killed me. Kaone is obviously a teachers pet, while Briss is actually the smart one. I sit at my cramped little desk and catch up on my sleep. Hey-late night walks do tend to take that out of you! My tutor can't stop me-it would be 'disrespectful' to insult a 'lady'. Or whatever crap Gai came up with.

She can, and does glare at me though. A lot. But I just ignore her. She can't do anything to me. Besides the lesson is so boring! I begin to think that it will never end. I can see the headlines now,
Lynx-15 year old girl drops dead after extreme boredom.
But when I smell lunch coming, my sad, grey world suddenly takes a turn for the better.

Much better.

My eyes fly open and I sit bolt upright. Servants enter the room, carrying dishes full of hot, steaming food.

Cue the stomach growling.

They place food at Kaone's and Briss's seat, but when the servants reach me, our tutor shoots me a evil smile.

"Just wait a bit there sonny! Lynx, before you may eat, I would like you to read just one sentence." She cackles. Then she writes something on the board. I narrow my eyes, scrutinizing the letters.

"You.....are a....pig." I pronounce slowly letting the letters roll off of my tongue.
The old hag sneers and rolls her eyes.

"Not you! I! It says I am a pig!!" She screams.

Come on-she fell into that trap way to easily. It would be dishonourable on my part not to follow up on that perfect set up.

"I agree." I laugh, sticking my tongue out at the old cow.
She flushes, and turns away from me. I expectantly stare at the man holding my food. He quickly sets it down. I hear a quiet snicker from the back corner of the room. I turn slightly to see Derrin smiling, trying to stifle his quiet laughter. He winks at me and I grin back at him. Then the servants exit the room, and I dig into my meal.

I change into leggings and a tunic for our run. It feels nice to be wearing material that clings to my legs-that isn't fancy. For the first time I feel like myself. Not the girl with the perfect hair, and midnight blue gown, or the one that has to fight to survive, but the real true blue me.
I like the real true blue me better then the fancy girl anyways.
I walk out of my room feeling so much better then I have in a long time. Right here, right now, I know I'll be ok.
And I will. I'll be ok.

The run is long, and hard. But I excel in this, so it's enjoyable for me. Pushing myself, feeling the pounding of me feet against the dirt, and the air being pushed out of my lungs makes me feel alive.
Maybe not so for Kaone and Briss. After the run, we do sit-ups and push-ups, and a bunch of exercise's that I have never heard of. By the end of our workout period, I have barely broken a sweat. Briss is lying on the ground, exhausted, and Kaone is angrily picking  at her cuticles. Gai looks at me, and I can see the approval in his eyes. I smirk, toss my hair proudly, and head off to my room.

While running is something I am good at, cooking and sewing are not. An hour after we start, I have burns on my arms, and the tips of my fingers are bruised and bleeding from poking myself with the needle so many times.
Malikah just shakes her head and bandages my arms and fingers, before heading downstairs for dinner. We even end up eating the meal that we cooked. It doesn't taste too bad considering how much of my blood is in the soup.

Straight after dinner we are sent to our room. Kaone writes in a brown leather book, while Briss reads a large, thick looking book. I roll over try to sleep. Or pretend to sleep in any case. After light goes out, and I can hear the deep breaths of my roommates, I slip out of bed and silently sneak out of the room. I'm good at sneaking out-I've had lots of practise at sneaking out of the orphanage-so much that I'm practically a pro. I meet Derrin in the entrance hall again, like we agreed the night before. We slip out of the house, and walk through the forest, walking and talking for hours, although it only seems like minutes. But all to soon, it's time to go back. Once again we stand by my door, quietly talking.

"See you tomorrow?" I whisper.

"Not tomorrow. The next night. If we're going to sneak out, then we should mix up the nights. Patterns are too predictable. If we get caught, then you're screwed." He mutters back. I sigh inaudibly. I don't want to wait another night to see my only friend here. But I guess it's the price I have to pay. Better to see him sometimes rather then never at all.

"Ok. I'll see you in two days time." I force a smile. He nods slowly. Then does something unexpected. Really unexpected. He quickly kisses me on the cheek. It's so fast I half think I imagine it. Derrin flushes, and walks away. I stand in shock by my door. He just kissed me? He kissed me! I break into a large smile. I twirl and close my eyes, radiating with happiness. I open the door and stroll to my bed, flopping into my back, grinning at the ceiling. Right now-I wouldn't leave this place even if I could go anywhere.
Everything feels good.
At least, it did.
Until Briss speaks out of the darkness.

"Enjoy your little walk with Derrin?"
