《 Chapter 1: Gambler Overlord 》

Luna sits on her throne, leaning her cheek against her knuckles. She appears bored as she glance around her empty palace. It feels quiet and too lonely for her. Well, she's not technically alone as she has Gal, who's sleeping on top of her throne. Luna looks at the doors that leads to the outside. She hesitates for a moment, thinking if she can go. But it's full of disgusting demons that may want to harm her or worse.

Sighing, she gets off of her throne and heads to the dressing room to grab her black hooded coat and wraps it around her to cover her face. Gal opens his eye and notices Luna heading towards the doors and squawks. Luna stops and looks up to her guard goose.

"Don't worry about me. I need you to stay here where it's safe and make sure no one trespass this palace. Okay?"

Gal hesitates and then gives her a nod. Luna smiles and opens the door.

"I'll be back, Gal."

With that, she leaves the palace. She stops at the top of the hill and sees the Pentagram City up ahead. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before opening them as they're now determined.

"Let's do this."

Luna takes one step at the time as she heads straight to the city.

Throughout the city she entered, Luna couldn't feel more disgusted than anything as she walk past the sinners who are killing each other, having s*x, eating each other, etc. She knew that this is Hell, but this is worse and no one even cares as they could do whatever they want freely. Luna walk past the cannibals that are eating the dead sinner. She nearly puked at the sight of one of the cannibals eating an eyeball. She pulled the hood down to cover her eyes.

Luna looks around the place to find anything that could make her less uncomfortable until she finally found one. The Jackpot Hotel with a casino. Curious, she approached the casino and stopped in front of the entrance. She opened the door and was met with flashing lights, domed cameras, mirrors, slot machines, card tables, and more. She could hear slot machine arms, coins falling into machines, alarms, people talking, and more. And the smell reeks of cigarette smoke, felt, perfume, cologne, food, and more. She even see roulette wheels, gaming tables, shuffle machines, slot machines, video poker machines, video lottery terminals, baccarat, bingo, keno, craps, betting terminals, and live dealer games.

She noticed the sinners are crowding around the pool table with a spotlight hanging above someone in the middle of the crowd. Luna walks over to it and moves past the sinners, excusing herself along the way. She then makes it to see a sinner holding their cards and they appear anxious and nervous while looking up at their competitor. Luna looks over to where they're looking at and sees an anthropomorphic avian cat demon in a fancy black suit with orange sleeves and an orange bowtie. His hair is sleeked back. He looks confident as he grins at the nervous sinner, knowing they're losing. Husk then places down his cards for everyone to see and it shows that he won. The sinner looks back down at their cards and slams them down on the pool table in frustration and defeat.

Still grinning, the cat demon holds out his clawed hand and releases glowing yellow chains as they wrap it around the sinner's neck and lock it.

"You work for me now. Now, fetch me a whiskey." he ordered.

The sinner nodded and ran off to go grab him a drink. The cat demon takes in the pile of money and faces the crowd.

"Is there anyone who can challenge the best gambling overlord?" he asked, making everyone cheer.

Luna, meanwhile, was interested in this overlord and wondered if she can try and play. She looks around and notices someone drop their medium pouch and picks it up and looks inside to see it full of cash. She looks back at the cat demon overlord then to the money and nods. Luna clears her throat loudly to gain their attention, including the overlord as she walks out of the crowd to reveal herself still wearing a hood to cover her face.

"Well, well...looks like we got ourselves some fresh meat here. Name's Husk - I own this fine establishment. We got blackjack, poker, roulette...take your pick. Just know that the house always wins in the end." Husk said, wondering who is this woman.

Striding in full of confidence, Luna opens the pouch and dumps out the cashes onto the pool table.

"I'll take a whack at it."

Husk raises an impressed eyebrow and nods slowly as he deals out the deck.

"Now this is what we like to see - a woman with guts. What say we make this interesting? How about double or nothing?"

"Your call." Luna said.

Husk smiles with his signature smugness.

"You know, I always get a kick outta players who think they got what it takes to win...I've been doin' this for years, sweetheart. You don't stand a snowball's chance in hell against me! You sure you wanna go double or nothing?"

She put a thoughtful look for a moment before making a decision.

"Double." she stated.

Husk's smugness grows as he deals out the next hand.

"So, this is a pretty bold move for a newbie like yourself...but I like it! You got guts, kid. This is gonna be one hell of a game...Good luck."

"You too." Luna said, grabbing her cards.

Husk stares intently at his dealt hand as he sizes her up.

"Alright then, let's cut the pleasantries...time to play the game."

He flips a card, revealing it to be an ace. Husk then bets a fairly large amount for an opening hand. Luna look almost impressed but smirked behind her cards.

"You're good, Husk. But... you're just not good enough."

Husk smirks as he hits her with a snarky one-liner.

"That's a ballsy claim, sweetheart... You've got guts. But not enough experience to back it up."

To prove him wrong, Luna flipped her cards to show him the same ace as his. Husk seems impressed by her bold move.

"Ooh, a real rookie's gamble! That's just one, sweetheart...you gotta get two to win it all. You sure you wanna keep goin'?"

Husk gives her the option to stick with the risk or cash out after hitting the ace.

"Let's keep playing." Luna declared with confidence, knowing it's time to play her ultimate card.

Husk bets everything he currently has on the table, which is an extremely high amount for even a veteran like him. It's a move that can only be taken if you're extremely skilled. He raises an eyebrow as he gives her the next decision.

"Well, what are ya waiting for? You gonna fold like every other schmuck in here once you get dealt a bad hand? Or do ya got the guts to match me?" he taunted her.

Luna glanced around and secretly used her magic to swipe out the cash she sees from the ground and the sinners' pockets before pulling out the fair amount of money and placing them in front for him to see. She's done this before when she was in Canterlot and play the one game she knows with her older sister.

"Let's play a poker. My game." she said. "I'll tell you what. The winner gets to do whatever they want. Loser gets to do whatever the winner wants."

Husk's face lights up with excitement.

"An honest-to-goodness game of poker? Now that's what I call playing with a full deck! Let me ask ya something first, though: Do you know what you're getting yourself into, sweetheart?"

She stare at him, recalling what her sister would always tell her whenever the aggressive player asks that kind of question.

"Do you know what you're getting yourself into?" she repeated.

Husk cracks a sly, amused smile as he takes note of her wisdom.

"Looks like you got a sharp mind on your shoulders. I'll tell ya this, missy - if we're playin' by my rules, there's no way in hell you're gonna be the one coming out on top."

"We'll see about that." Luna chuckled.

Husk tosses his cards into the table and leans back in his chair, confident that he has the upper hand to show the cards are straight in diamonds.

"Yeah, we certainly will, sweetheart. You know the rules?"

"I do."

Luna tossed her cards down to reveal a full royal flush.

"In your honor, a royal flush." she said with a hint of British accent, causing some demon folks, who are watching, to chuckle.

Husk's confident smirk falters as he nods solemnly.

"Well, you sure pulled a good one on me there, sweetheart. Let's see what I got..."

Husk deals the next set of cards, looking at each one nervously before putting them on the table to reveal a jack, a five, three, queen, and...a second five. He slumps in his chair, realizing he's lost the hand.

"You know...I'm still surprised a little gal like you knew how to win."

"Nervous? I thought you're a great gambler." Luna smirked widely, knowing she got him.

Husk scoffs and chuckles.

"Well, even I lose every now and then...it's just part of the game. But you know what, sweetheart? You won fair and square."

Husk smiles and extends his hand out to her.

"You played a hell of a game, kid."

Luna smiled and shook it.

"Thanks. You too. It's fun." she said, grabbing the amounts of money and placing them in her bag.

"So, now that you've won. What exactly do you need me to do?" he asked.

Luna put a thoughtful look for a moment and look at Husk, who doesn't appear defeated and she could tell he wanted a rematch.

"How about we keep on playing poker until we know who the real winner is?" she suggested.

This made him smirk wider.

"I'm in."

Before they knew it, Luna and Husk kept going at it a couple of rounds, making a big crowd of demons watching them all entertained. Each of them wining or losing. And then they both go all in and then there goes the final as Husk and Luna had a stare down with their cards flipped down on the table to prevent them from seeing. Husk then flipped up his own cards.

"I have two small pair. Eights... and eights."

This made the crowd go in awe and clap at his move. Husk confidentially placed a cigar in his mouth and leaned back in his chair, grinning at the clapping crowd.

"Thank you."

He noticed Luna's card a little far away from her other cards.

"Not going to look?"

Luna just stare at him while looking down at his cards that's also a little far away from him. Husk noticed it and flipped up his other cards.

"Well, how you gonna know if you can beat my straight flush?"

Everyone clapped once again. Luna then placed her cards down and lined them up for him to see.

"Ten of spades. Jack of spades. Queen of spades. King of spades. A possible royaI flush." Sinner that lost against Husk announced, while serving Husk a drink.

Hearing that, the crowd was about to cheer but the sinner stopped them as the game is not over yet.

"Quiet! Quiet!"

They immediately simmer down as Luna look at Husk for a moment and then move her hand over to the one card she didn't look. She hover her hand above it as the demons watch her with their breaths hitched while Husk watch silently. Closing her eyes, she slowly grabbed her card and held it up to her face as she opened her eyes after. Looking at Husk once again, she look down at her card and sigh in defeat. This made Husk smirk, thinking he won. But that didn't last long as Luna tossed her card in the air and it landed across the pool table in front of him to reveal an Ace card. Husk's eyes widen in shock as the crowd cheer at Luna's win.

"Well... shit. I didn't expect that. No one has ever beaten me before." he said, looking impressed. "Congrats on the win... What's your name?"

Smiling, Luna removed her hood from her head to reveal her face to him. Husk was in awe at her beauty as her night hair flows.

"You can call me... Nightmare Moon." she said.

"Impressive name." he complimented.

"Thanks. You did great also on the game." she said.

"Hehe. Thank you. How about we have a drink as a token of celebration?" he offered.

"Sure. I never had a drink for a while." Luna said, grabbing all the money she won.

"Alright, everyone. Show's over." Husk announced to the demons who are still watching them.

They all groan in defeat and left the two alone to gamble their money on the games. Luna and Husk headed to the bar as they sat down next to each other and order their drink. Husk gets another whiskey while Luna gets a Blue Moon Martini.

"To a good game." Luna held out her glass and Husk chuckled before clinking his glass.

"To a great game." Husk said with a grin. "Got to say, haven't had that much fun in a while with a game." he admitted.

"I'm glad I could provide you with such entertainment." Luna said as she took a sip.

"So, where are you from? I'm pretty sure a gal like you would have made a big splash already if you came here recently." Husk asked as he looked at her.

"I came here a day ago, you could say I was just kicked out of my home recently." Luna said, taking another sip trying to hide the wince as she remembered her former home.

"Apologies, didn't realize it." Husk said, his ears slightly dropping.

"It's fine, I'm doing well so far now. I got my own place." Luna admitted.

"Oh yeah? Where?" Husk asked, taking another sip.

"The moon palace." Luna admitted before she heard Husk choking.

"Fuck!! The moon palace, you live there!?!?" Husk asked in shock as he looked at her.

He heard singing one night and asked one of his guys to investigate it, only for the man to say he saw a single figure creating a castle out of the shadows. That night, the guy had nightmares that lasted well into the mourn'. Due to the description of the castle and the moon aesthetic, it was dubbed the 'moon palace' amongst the overlords in Hell.

"Yeah, I made that place. I might as well live there." Luna admitted as she finished her drink, not registering Husk's shocked face. "Have a good night Husk, see you around." she said before she got up from her seat.

Husk swore he saw a bit of shimmery dark blue hair that faded into wisps and a black feather. Husk felt himself release a small chuckle before a smirk over came his face as he watched her leave.

"What a strange gal." he admitted while taking a sip.
