21: A Single Tear

To say that she came in as swiftly as a wind would've been an understatement. She just stood, still and silent, leaning against the door, fixating her piercing bright blue eyes on the people in front of her.

"She really is something, isn't she, that Marinette?"

The silence that had ensued after Plagg's story was broken up by her voice, and all the heads whipped in her direction.

There she stood, her face betraying any emotion that she could possibly ever feel, staring them all down with her bright blue eyes that made chills run down Adrien's spine.

"Bridgette."

"Master Fu."

The petit old man stared her down with such ferocity that Adrien didn't think he was capable of ever harnessing.

"What did you do to Marinette?"

"Getting straight to the point, are we?"

Master spoke with such venom in his voice that Adrien was quite surprised that Bridgette didn't already shrink under his gaze. Instead she kept her cool and took a seat, making herself at home.

"I already told Chat what I did to her."

"I am aware of that. But how did you possibly accomplish it?"

"Why do you need to know?"

Suddenly a loud noice of crash echoed through the room. Adrien huffed, his hand outstretched, while a shocked Bridgette looked his way. Tikki and Plagg stared wide eyed at the broken vase on the floor.

"You know damn well why we do!"

She seemed fazed for a moment, but then reverted back to her old self. Cold and emotionless.

"I do."

"Of all things Bridgette, not even Master Zing would've expected this from you!"

"How can you honestly live with yourself? Even as a spirit? Doesn't the value of someone else's life matter to you?" Tikki questioned.

She just stayed silent, with her face down. Her bangs covered her eyes and everything was silent again. That is, until they all heard a sob.

"It's nothing new, you know," she whispered, "..being a disappointment.."

She was crying.

"Always..as long as I've lived...I've been one. As a daughter, as a friend, as a lover, as a human.."

"So I don't feel that bad being one as a spirit now."

She slowly raised her head, smiling sadly. Any trace of the previous emotionlessness was gone from her face. Now it just reflected immense pain and heartbreak.

"You are acting like one by saying that."

"Tikki.." Plagg began only to be cut off by her.

"If you honestly live by that motto, then you're not a disappointment to us, but one to yourself. And I feel sorry for you."

"You're just saying that because you don't remember."

"I don't care if I don't. All I know is that your ideas about everything are twisted and it's messing with you head. You aren't able to let go of the past-"

"Stop acting like you know!" She suddenly screamed. "You don't know anything about what happened! You don't know anything  about what I go through! You don't know anything because you don't REMEMBER!"

"He wiped out your memories to keep you safe! I broke you far too much! I failed you as a holder. I failed everyone! So stop pretending like you know when you DON'T!"

"Going through that torture again and again was hell! It was excruciating! So that's why I did what I did. But now she is changing it all!"

"What?" Master questioned.

After this little outburst at Tikki, Bridgette went silent again, averting her gaze back down.

"Seems like Marinette was stronger that I thought. She has exercised some control over me."

"How is that even possible?"

"Her spirit is strong. She is determined. And now she is changing my past."

"But that's...sort of..good right? That means that there can be a chance of her-"

"It can be fatal to her."

This mere sentence cut Adrien off and he stared at her shocked.

"She can unknowingly make fatal mistakes. Yes, it holds the possibility of her saving me and Felix, but given the incidents that have occurred in my life, I highly doubt that she'd have a chance."

"Or even worse, she can be stuck as me, for all eternity. Meaning that Marinette Dupain-Cheng could never wake up."

"But why-"

"Life works in many mysterious ways Tikki. You of all people should know that."

A light chuckle escaped her lips as she stared at the red kwami with fondness.

"We have to save her."

Adrien's declaration was met with everyone else's gaze and Bridgette scoffed.

"And how do you plan on doing that?"

Instead of snapping a reply at her like he would've done moments ago, he instead looked at her with warmth in his eyes, a small smile forming on his lips.

"You'll help us of course!"

His statement was met by weird looks from everybody. Bridgette was the most shocked though.

"And what makes you think I'll do that?"

His smile just widened and he gazed intently at her, fixing his bright green on her blue ones. He wondered how he could've possibly missed it. He could see it clearly now. She was not a bad person.

Not at all.

He could clearly see her hurt and her pain. And he could see the goodness she so desperately tried to conceal. He could see how much hurt it caused her to hurt Marinette like that. He could see her true self.

"Because I know that you want to."

She just sat there speechless, frozen in shock. She was lost in his green eyes that held so much warmth, even after all the horrible things that she'd said and done. How could he be so forgiving? So sure? So trusting?

And just like that a single tear escaped her blue eyes.

Hallelujah guys! Just one word: cringe. Ughh I'm so ashamed, idk about this chapter. I promise I'd try my best to come up with better ones. I've finally thought of an ending (sort of) so I'm most probably gonna finish this book.

Finally!

Also, this means that this book is coming to an end. Just 4-5 chapters more I guess. This whole spirit swap thing gonna be over soon.

Ik that it wasn't like most miraculous books, the plot is too dark and hawkmoth is just not there. But remember, this is all happening in just one day. And how many akuma attacks could you possibly have?

And what about Bridge? How do u feel about her? I told you she wasn't that bad! ;)

Anyway...until next time!
