Rob

Okay, I felt bad. I was trying to do what I thought was right, but that backfired. I wasn't thinking! I just hope Lachlan can forgive me. We were back at the little place where we set up, and Mitch said it was about two fifteen. I was laying on the ground at the edge of the clearing, staring at the trees above me.

I was still bummed out about what happened back in the temple. I could've protected everyone, but instead, I panicked and forgot that I had powers... I was kinda dissapointed in myself. I wasn't gonna show it, though. Okay, maybe I wanted to talk to someone. I wanted to talk to someone I could trust. Someone I trusted... Preston? I don't know why but I seemed to bond towards him the most.

I decided I would talk to him before we get moving again. Talk about what, I wasn't sure.

Preston was walking around the clearing, seemingly bored. I shifted from my position on the ground, standing up. I watched Preston sit down by Lachlan, and I was suddenly unsure about going over there to talk, knowing I may be greeted with hostility from Lachlan. I sighed, then sat back down. I saw the two looking in my direction, and I started to wonder if they were talking about me.

Probably.

I looked to the side, avoiding making eye contact, while trying to listen to their conversation. I couldn't hear, though. I glanced over to them, and accidentally made eye contact with Preston. He smiled, which suprised me. He motioned me to come sit with him. I was hesitant, and didn't make any move at first, until he called for me to go over there. "Rob! C'mon!"

I simply nodded, and made my way over by them. "Hey Rob!" Preston greeted me. "H-hi? Uh, Preston, can I talk to you...?" Preston nodded. "Sure. Sit down." I continued to stand, not responding to his last sentence. "Er, in private."

"Oooooh, Robbie's gotta a crush!" I heard Mitch tease from across the clearing. 'Really, Mitch?' I thought. "Sure, Rob! Lachlan, I'll be right back." Preston said. "Okay." Lachlan replied, going right back to whatever he was doing before. Preston lead me away into the trees, going out of earshot from the others. "What did you want to talk about, Rob?" he asked. "I-I don't know how to explain this..." "Take your time." I took a deep breath, then took a few small seconds to think out what I was going to say.

"I wish I could take earlier back, you know? I just feel bad now. Okay? And now Vik is hurt, and I could've saved everyone!" Then I stopped talking, letting Preston take in all of the things that I let out. "Rob, real quick, why did you talk to me? You could've talked to Mitch Jerome..." I looked to the side, just now realizing how awkward the moment probably was. "Well, I trust you, Preston. I know we've just met, but I trust you. I don't know why." Preston smiled. "Well, that's good, because I trust you too, Robert. And I do forgive you, I hardly had time to think myself!" He chuckled. I've never really heard him laugh before. It was a pretty cute laugh.

"So, Rob, anything else you want to say?" He asked, the grin still on his face. I couldn't help but smile, too. "No, nothing exept the fact that the fate of the entire world is in our hands." I laughed. "Oh, yeah. There's that, too. Dammit, Rob, you're stressing me out!" He yelled playfully, pushing me. I felt myself almost trip, but I caught myself.

"Well, that was too close for comfort." I laughed. "Talk about it." He said, leaning against a nearby tree. Suddenly his eyes widened and he gasped. "Cactus!" He exclaimed. "Cactus...?" He nodded. "Yeah, we had tons back home." He said, walking to a lonley piece of cactus in the middle of the woods that I had not noticed. "They were everywhere!" He said. Then his expression dropped. I realized how much he must have missed his home.... but then it came to me.

"Preston, how do you remember that?!" I asked, astounded.

"I-I don't know- I" his voice was strange and he just looked ahead, not even noticing I'm there. He started to look sad, and depressed. "I remember..." he whispered. "They left me...." He looked like he wanted to cry. "Left you...? What are you talking about?" He looked over at me sadly. "They did. I was little..."

Preston watched all the soilders march down the long road, his dad holding his hand. It was cloudy out, looking like it could rain at any second. They were on the edge of the City, knowing it was dangerous to go any further. The boy looked at his father, sadness in his eyes. "Do you have to go?" His dad got crouched down to the young child's height, and brushed a stray lock of hair out of his face. "Preston, Levithian won't stop until we k- defeat it. I'll be right back. Six months will fly by so fast!" His dad put on a fake smile, and then forced a laugh. "You'll get to annoy your mother all you want."
"But I want to annoy you!" Preston was oblivious to the fact his father had to go. The older man's smile faded slowly, and he hugged his son. "I'll miss you, my son." Preston smiled. "I'll miss you too, Daddy." His dad loosened his hug, but didn't let go. "Take care of mommy and your sibilings, okay?" The small boy nodded. "Okay. Promise you'll come back soon?" His father was hesitant, and he looked to his wife for help, but found none. "I promise."

"Soldier!" A deep voice called. "I've got to go now." His father stood up, and looked down at his boy. He put his hand up in a salute and smiled again. "Goodbye, my little Cactus."

"And, I never saw him again. I never saw any of them. The others left me. I hurt them..." I put my hand on his shoulder, which felt cold... really cold. "I'm sure it's not your fault-" "No, Rob. It is. If I had let him go sooner..." He sighed and started to walk back to the camp. "...then he wouldn't have died. It was that damn dragon. I'm going back to camp." He said picking up his pace. There was something he wouldn't tell me. I knew there was something wrong, and I just wanted to help him. "Wait!" I called. "What?" he asked irritability. "I just- tell me more. The rest of us know nothing... you know... and I want to know you more. "

He shook his head. "Somethings, Rob, you just don't need to know." "But-" He was steaming now. Literally. I felt hot standing at the distance I was from him. "Rob! I said NO! Okay? I just don't want to talk about it."

"Okay." I said. My mouth was a thin line. I kinda just wanted to stop hurting people for the day. I was done. After all, tomorrow is another day.

The sun was slowly sinking in the sky, and we knew that if we didn't get a move on and friend shelter, we might as well be dead.

The mobs have grown even more powerful since our... arrival, I guess you could say that. Yeah, we have our powers, but we've taken enough risks today, and I would've liked a nice sleep tonight. Hopefully.

We all traveled in a group for a few days, me primarily sticking to... well... me. I know, I'm so social. I can tell Preston felt bad. Though, I don't wanna talk to him. I still trusted him, though. It's like we've had some bond before, but I don't think you want to hear me rambling about this. Well, I'll get to the goodness, don't worry! Just bare with me here, dear readers!

Anyways, I would usually help out Vik. He usually refused and said he can do it on his own...

Later that day, as the sun dipped into the green trees, a lone desert on the horizon, we made a camp. It was a cave that dug into a tall hilltop, which gave us the higher ground. You know, just in case.

"It's a Hobbit Hole!" Mitch declared, standing at the entrance, pointing inside. Jerome laughed. "Good one, Mitch! Wait, what's a Hobbit Hole?" Mitch shrugged. "I dunno. It sounds cool, though."

I chuckled at their silliness. "Camp here?" Lachlan asked, taking a few steps towards the cave. "Sure." Vik said. "It means I can stop. My leg is killing me!"

"Yeah, guys. Let's stop for Vik." I said. "Okay. This would make a good place to stay the night." Mitch pointed out, looking inside. I sighed. 'Finally some rest.'

"What is it, Rob?" Preston asked gently, startling me. "Oh, uh, I'm just tired." I replied. "You sure? Also, I'm sorry about what happened earlier, I just want to get to know you better before I tell.... okay?" He smiled. I just nodded. "Good. Can't wait to sleep!" He smiled, then streched.

"Okay guys!" Lachlan said. "We are staying here tonight-" "Yaaaaaaay." Vik interrupted. "-and I think we should get inside now. It's almost sunset. We should also have someone go collect wood, which shouldn't be a problem." He instructed, glancing around the surrounding trees.
