Chapter 2

I wake up the next morning in a nest of beanbags and blankets, surrounded by various books. I smile, taking in the scene of my home- the library.

The library had always been one of my favorite places. Ms. Wood, the librarian, would let me stay for hours at a time. And after my parents kicked me out, she gave me the key, giving me a place to live.

Now, I sit alone in the room I'd created in the empty storage room, trying to keep my thoughts from the night before.

I suddenly hear the familiar creak of the main door being open, and I rush out of the room, not wanting anyone to find out. I dart behind a shelf, rearranging a few books.

"Excuse me," I hear a voice that sounds all-too familiar- the voice of whoever saved me last night. "Have you seen a girl around here today? Really thin, brown hair, brown eyes?"

I freeze, realize he's asking about me. I curl back against the shelf, trying to make myself as small as possible.

"Oh, yes, I think she's in here somewhere. You might not want to bother her, she gets very focused on her work." As usual, Ms. Wood covers for me.

I hear footsteps growing closer to me, and I try to move as silently as I can. The last thing I needed was another interrogation.

However, as soon as I turn, I am greeted with those sea-blue eyes once again.

"What exactly are you doing here?" I hiss.

"I wanted to talk about last night." He replies.

I groan. "Last night? Well, it was Thursday, June 18th. It wasn't very cloudy, and there was a new moon. The temperature was around 75-80 if I remember correctly."

He sighs. 'Please, I only want to help-"

"I don't need help." I snap. "Besides, why should I trust you? I don't even know your name!" I sigh. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be going back to my relatively peaceful morning."

I turn away, smiling to myself when he says nothing. However, just as I'm about to walk down another aisle, he speaks up.

"Amarinthine." His voice seems to ring in the silence.

I turn around. "What?"

"My name. Amarinthine Crown." He says.

A pretty shade, but I much prefer blue. "Selene Nova." I tell him. "I left my real last name with my old family."

"Old family?"

Almost instinctively, I roll my eyes. "Haven't you pressed enough information out of me already?"

He opens his mouth, but I cut him off. "Look, I appreciate you saving my life. Really, I do. But if you keep up with the questioning, I'm just going to keep denying that anything happened."

"Selene, trust me. I only want to help you." His voice is calm, but I can sense a hint of a plea.

"I told you before, I don't need help. I can manage perfectly fine on my own. Goodbye, Amarinthine, and my apologies for not meeting your expectations." With that, I walk off into my room, just barely keeping myself from slamming the door.

Collapsing into my nest-bed, I stare at the wall, the conversion playing over and over in my head. And however mad I was, one question still lingered-

Why would he ever want to save me?
