Chapter 1
The beach really didn't have much sand. There was a narrow stretch by the water, and beyond that were dark rocks.
I stood on the bridge overlooking the water, closing my eyes to breath in the crisp ocean air.
I turned my head upwards, looking at the night sky. Silver stars dotted the expance of darkness, making up for the monthly absence of the moon.
Gazing down at the rocks below, I felt an odd sense of peace sweep over me. Tonight was the night. No more insults, no more hate, no more pain.
The gentle breeze blows my hair back, and I smile. I climb up on the wooden railing of the bridge, listening to the waves crash against the shore. Looking down, I see the dark rocks several feet below me. I smile, knowing that freedom is just moments away. I close my eyes, and without a second thought, I step off.
I fall through the air, silently rushing through my last goodbyes. I clench my fists, bracing myself for the impact.
It never comes.
After a moment of confusion, I realize that I'm being held up by a very warm something- no, someone- and that I am very much alive, to my dissatisfaction.
The first thing I notice about the person currently holding me are his eyes, blue as the ocean itself. I realize that I'm staring for a bit too long, and quickly look away.
"May I ask what you were doing on that bridge?" He asks, his voice surprisingly calm for someone who's just caught a falling girl.
"And may I ask what you are doing out here?" I reply.
"Saving your life, apparently." He grins. "And you didn't answer my question."
Quickly, I think of a cover. "Oh, you know, just a bit of a night stroll."
He obviously doesn't believe me. "Right. And you just happened to climb up and fall off?"
"I thought I saw something, and was trying to get a better look. Guess I just kinda lost my balance..." I smile, hoping that it'll be enough to convince him.
His skeptical gaze remains unchanged. "Because, you know, falling off bridges onto fairly sharp rocks in the middle of the night is an everyday ordeal."
I push away, standing back up. "Look, okay, you saved my life and I respect that. And as much as I've enjoyed the interrogation, I have things to do."
I start walking away, mentally cursing myself for nearly getting caught. I hear him call out for me to wait, but I ignore him, quickening my pace. As soon as I turn the corner, I break into a run, heading for the place that I called home.
A place where hopefully, I could escape.
