A Fear of Fire
(Natsu X Reader)

3rd Person's POV~~

(Y/N) (L/N) is her name. She doesn't belong to a guild, she doesn't take orders from others, she hates the world, honestly.

If she could describe the world in one word?

Shit.

She wanders the world, attacking Dark Guilds, occasionally corrupted guilds, the usual thing.

Well, for someone with no one.

(Y/N) is alone. No exceed, no siblings, no significant other, nothing, no one.

That's how it's always been, as long as she could remember, she was alone.

The last thing she remembered, was being four years old, and an odd feeling welling up inside her as she stared at a burning town.

She didn't know what the town was, who set the town on fire, but she's never liked fire, any kind.

Fire mages, bonfires, wild fires...
Anything that burned, she hated.

Primarily Natsu Dragneel.

She met Team Natsu while out fighting Oracion Seis, having to temporarily team up with them.

She tended to hang around Gray more, hating Natsu from the start, knowing he was a Fire Dragon Slayer. She hated everything about his existence, his loud mouth, the fact that he always picks fights, that he yells "I'm all fired up!" When ready to fight.

Hated it.

All of it.

And guess who she just happened to run into?

"Natsu watch where you're going!" (Y/N) hissed, standing up by herself, and brushing her (F/C) shirt off.

Natsu looked at her a bit sheepishly,"Sorry (Y/N)... My bad."

"You bet it was your bad. Why are you out here anyway?"

(Y/N) was on a walk in a forest a good hour or two away from Fairytail. He should not be out here; Her point exactly.

"Uh, training?" He said, obviously lying.

"Alone? And Natsu Dragneel, the great Fire Dragon Slayer, is training? Are pigs flying somewhere, or am I just imagining things?" She crossed her arms, before huffing,"Go back Natsu. One; I'm not joining Fairytail, no matter how many times you nag me. Two; I don't like you. Bye." She turned around, and started walking off.

Natsu watched her leave, and sighed, getting angry with himself. Why couldn't he just say it?! It's not that hard!! "Happy! Let's go back buddy!"

"Aye!" Happy popped out of a tree, and grabbed the pink headed boy's shoulders, lifting him into the air.

-Timeskip One Month-

The entire guild noticed Natsu's funk. He'd been down since he found out that (Y/N) wasn't coming back to Magnolia for a long time.

She had to leave for their "safety" and the way she told them?

Left a note.

Natsu at first was pissed beyond explanation, yelling about how she was family and shouldn't have left. That made a bulb come on in Lucy's head, and made the blonde celestial wizard try and drift away from her love for Natsu.

She couldn't.

With (Y/N) gone, she thought she could win over Natsu, knowing he prefered the (Magic/Type) Mage over her, even though that (H/C) haired girl hated him.

It's been a month now, Natsu still hasn't lightened up. He hasn't gone on any missions with his team, and now resided in the guild hall for a while, until he could pay for his house and food.

Everyone was a bit worried.

But.

They didn't know that a specific mage watched over them, kept them safe with this one space away.

She was always outside the guild, in the forest where Natsu went to punch a tree before crying, completely distraught, wanting to know if she was alright or not. It tore her apart piece by piece, making her drop hints she was alright, small (Fav/Flower) flowers fluttering in front of Natsu whenever he was in the forest, causing him to spring up and start shouting for her, but she hid.

She never let Natsu or Fairytail know she was anywhere near them, and it went on for more than a month.

Soon,

A month turned into years,

And years turned into three long, lonely years.

Until she made an appearance again, and was tackled by everyone.

Natsu started crying, and charged (Y/N), throwing his arms around her tightly,"Why?! Why did you leave us?!"

"To keep you all-"

"That's crap and you know it!" Natsu said sternly, moving away and leaving his hands on her shoulders,"We're your family, right? Family watches out for each other, and that's what we would've done (Y/N)! We would've faced anything, fought anyone, to keep you safe!"

Mirajane laughed a bit from the bar,"Natsu, I think you're talking about yourself for the fighting and facing anything part. All you did was wallow in self-pity while (Y/N) was gone."

This brought a bright red blush onto the Dragon Slayers face,"S-Shut up Mira!"

Lucy smiled, even though it hurt her to say these words,"(Y/N), Natsu likes you~!" She rolled the 'Likes' part like Happy does.

(Y/N) moved his hands off of her shoulders, and blushed a bit, but huffed, showing off a tough side while crossing her arms,"I'm still not staying in the guild. I just had to, uh, check on you guys. I'll be wandering around again, and I'm going to stay in my little house in the forest for a while."

Natsu cocked his head,"Why don't you stay with Lucy or Erza for a while? Try out the guild life, just for a day or two, then you can make a decision on wether you want to stay or not!"

"Fine. Lucy?" She begrudgingly agreed, and turned to the blonde Celestial Mage.

"Sure! I wouldn't mind having you over for some time!" She said, and gave a happy smile.

"Alright, thanks Lucy." (Y/N) smiled a bit, before crossing her arms in front of the guild,"Happy now?"

"Aye!"

"NOT YOU YOU STUPID CAT!"

"LUCYYYYYYY! (Y/N)'S BEING MEAN TO MEEEEEE!" Happy cried, flying forward and crashing into Lucy's chest.

(Y/N) shrugged and started walking out of the guild hall. They didn't notice, well, she thought no one noticed, until she felt her wrist being grabbed a ways away from the guild hall.

She turned around, and noticed Natsu. Her stomach fluttered, which she figured as fear, "Natsu, what are you doing?"

"W-Well..." He looked away and took his hand away from her wrist, rubbing the back of his neck,"I was wondering if you wanted me to walk you to Lucy's place! There's some bad people roaming around, or I hear anyway."

"Whatever. If you want to I don't mind." She shrugged, and felt a blush form on her face. That's when it struck her; It wasn't fear she was feeling...

It was love.

Natsu grinned, and her heart beat faster, "Great! Let's go then!" He started walking beside (Y/N), his presence made her feel safer than she has in a long time.

They fell into an oddly comfortable silence, and Natsu ended up putting his arms behind his head, walking like that.

The silence was broken when Natsu got (Y/N) to Lucy's apartment,"Hey, (Y/N)... Can I, uh, ask you something?"

"Sure." She noticed he was oddly serious; Nervous too.

"Why do you hate me?" He cocked his head like a confused puppy.

"It's," She sighed,"I don't hate you Natsu, quite the opposite actually. That year away I couldn't stop worrying about Fairytail, I was always a wreck in my mind, and, Natsu Dragneel, you always noticed when I dropped (Fav/Flower) onto you in the forest after a mental breakdown." She smiled,"All I can say, is it took me three years to learn something, something very important."

Natsu's head straightened out,"What did-" He was cut off by a red-faced (Y/N) grabbed the collar of his vest, and crashing her lips onto his.

His arms instantly moved around her waist, and he kissed back. He has had a love for her since before she left.

It was short, sweet, but passionate. It was firey, and, despite her fear of fire, (Y/N) didn't mind.

In fact,

She loved it.

Huh,

Guess Fire isn't always bad...
