Fairy Christmas
Taehyung woke up to a shrill version of Santa Clause is coming to town which his alarm clock blasted into the chilly room. With a growl, he hit the snooze button and turned to the other side. How could he have thought that being woken by a cliché Christmas song on Christmas day would be a good idea?
Ten minutes later, the same artificial voice began to sing again, but he choked it after the first note and decided he could not stand another alarm going off. Ruffling through his much too long hair, he sat up and looked through the plain room. Because of the lack of anything more interesting, his eyes got glued to the tiny, crippled Christmas tree with the frantically blinking LED lights which flickered in all the colors of the rainbow. Even the tree looked sad. His tip was bent to the right and he had an eye-catching empty spot on the lowed left. All in all, it looked like a grumpy old tree who had been forced to put on striking lights to cover up his infirmity. The piles of needles underneathe not to mention...
With a sigh, Tae stood up and toddled over to his closet. There was no reason for dressing up; he would see no one today. So, he just exchanged his pajama jacket with the biggest and coziest red pullover he had and put on some plushy white socks. Then, he walked over to the heater under the window and turned it up. There was no snow outside. Everything was gray and dark. He sighed and closed his eyes to imagine there was a big layer of snow outside, fluffy and bright. The picture slipped from his mind when he opened his eyes again to the boring view outside his window.
Turning his back towards the gray sadness, he walked over to the big and plushy carpet and lay down with his head under the blinking tree. Hypontized, his eyes flickered between the colorful lights that sparkled through the curtain of dark-green needles. What could he do today? This was his first Christmas all alone. No family, no friends. He had moved from Daegu to Seoul some weeks ago for a new job, and his new employer had denied him a real Christmas vacation, no hard feelings here. So, he had decided to stay in Seoul over his two free days. But now, he was alone.
Bored, he watched the red LED that looked like it was about to explode any second. 'Whee-oo whee-oo' he whispered in the rhythm of the light, imitating a fire truck sirene. A picture of his tree on fire popped up in his mind. Well, it could not look any more pitiful.
After what could have been minutes or hours, his stomach rumbled. Maybe a pancake brunch could lighten up his mood? He stumbled over into the small kitchen to search for the ingredients, leaving behind a trace of loose needles that trickled from his hair.
Fifteen minutes later, half of the kitchen was white from the flour explosion he had caused by letting the bag slip from his hands, but he had a pile of delicious-looking pancakes in front of him. He would take care of the chaos tomorrow.
When he was about to chop his first syrup-bathed cake, a rumble made him freeze in motion. After some seconds he heard the strange clattering sound again. Tracking it down to one of the lower cupboards in which he stored buckets and floorcloths, he got up. A little scared, he walked closer and crotched down, ignoring the flour under his feet. There were no rats in here, right?
With a racing heart he opened the cupboard and was met by a small human-like figure, maybe about one foot tall, that looked at him in shock. With a very unmanly scream he fell on his butt and made a cloud of flour puff into the air. The small figure sneezed, and sparkling dust shot out of its nose. Another feminine scream left Tae's mouth.
"Shut it, human!" he heard a grumpy voice, and the small being became visible again. Now covered under a layer of white dust.
Flabbergasted, Taehyung closed his mouth.
In front of him stood a small man with light-blue hair and paper-white skin (though he did not know if that was caused by the flour), dressed in jeans and a red pullover with white stipes. The only thing that was off was his height. When the small man was done with dusting off his clothes, he looked at him again. His lips were slightly pouting and Taehyung notized the red-framed eyes.
"You've been crying," he stated.
"No," the other replied grumpily and looked at him coldly. The rough voice did not match the cute appearance.
"Are you a gnome?" Taehyung asked, trying to get something else out of the man than growls.
"A gn- damn, boy, that hurt," the other said in a defeated tone with a blank face, "I'm a fairy, a Christmas fairy at that."
Only now, Taehyung noticed the transparent dragonfly-like wings. A fairy! Was he dreaming? His eyes lit up with curiousity.
"Stop staring," the fairy growled. He did not seem particularly happy for a Christmas fairy though.
Taehyung thought about what to do when the other spoke again, "I smell something sweet."
"You want some pancakes?" he offered.
"That'd be nice," the small man said and suddenly took off to fly over to the small kitchen table. Still in shock and struck by awe, Taehyung followed him.
After dusting off his pants and getting out another plate for his unexpected guest, he sat down and continued staring while stuffing his mouth with sweet pancake. The small dipped his finger into the thick layer of syrup and licked it off, followed by a crumb of cake.
"Not bad," the fairy said unimpressed.
Taehyung frowned. He had expected some more praising for his work. After all, this was the first time he had done those by himself. But when the other started to munch away the pancake like he was starving, his frown turned into a satisfaction. So, someone was just too proud to give him credit. Now that he thought about it, it seemed to be logical. Were fairies not proud people?
"Do you always look like that?" the fairy asked between two bites.
"Like what?" Taehyung asked oblivious.
"Like a melancholic Christmas fluff ball in starry pajama pants?" the other deadpaned.
Musing, Tae looked at his blue pajama pants with the yellow stars. Was it that obvious? With sinking mood, he drew patterns in the flour with his white plushy socks. Well, he was melancholic, no reason to deny it. Celebrating Christmas alone sucked. His appetite vanished.
"Don't get me wrong!" the fairy said, "Looks cozy. But shouldn't you be smiling? It's christmas after all."
"Why arent you smiling? You're a Christmas fairy after all."
"Have no reason."
"Well, me neither."
Both just stared at their pancakes.
The soft click of a clock cut through the silence, announcing a new minute.
"Wooow, how time flies," the fairy murmured sarcastically and jumped up. "Okay, let's wipe that frown off your face and get some Christmas mood into this apartment!" And he jumped into the air and flew into the living room/bedroom.
With a soft smile, Taehyung followed his magical guest. The fairy hovered in the middle of the room, just staring.
"What are you waiting for?" he asked the blue-haired.
The small man turned around with an apologetic face, "I don't know what people normally do at Christmas."
Confused, Taehyung looked at the other, "But you're a Christmas fairy. Shouldn't you know?"
"Well... I might have spaced out on that lecture," the small confessed and hunched his shoulders.
"Hm, well, listening to Christmas songs and eating sweets and talking, I guess," Taehyung tried to help.
"You guess?"
"I never really thought about what my family did on Christmas day." Tae shrugged. He always just had tagged along and never had found one particular thing that stood out to him. Being with his family had always been enough for him.
"Well, let's start with the music and the sweeets then," the fairy suggested, and Tae walked over to the sound system. He scanned through his CDs and smiled when he found what he had been searching for. Frank Sinatras Christmas album was a regular in those days.
Afterwards, he raided all closets, drawers and cupboards for sweets or things similar to that. Even the chocolate Easter eggs found their way onto the carpet in front of the blinking tree where the blue-haired was waiting with a curious look on his face.
Finally done, Taehyung sat down in front of the fairy and they looked at each other. The mood was weird. But everything was better than the hopeless mood from this morning, Taehyung thought and relaxed a little.
"My name's Yoongi, by the way," the fairy said and stretched out a small hand.
"Taehyung," the other said and held out his pinky with a grin.
For some reason, the strange mood had lifted.
"Well, this is all I could find," Taehyung said, "Help yourself."
The fairy grabbed a confectionery that was almost as big as his head and started to unwrap the sparkly paper.
Half an hour later, they were both out on the floor.
"Damn, I'm going to burst if I eat one more," Taehyung groaned.
"I feel you," Yoongi replied groggily.
"Does Santa really exist?" Taehyung asked on a whim. If there were fairies, maybe there was a Santa Claus, too.
"What is a Santa?" Yoongi asked.
Tae looked at him with wide eyes. How could someone not know Santa. He tried to give a short description of the man every child was waiting for and looked at the other in curiosity when he was done.
"So, you say," Yoongi tried to sum it up, "that there's a fat man in a red coat with a silly hat, that comes into your house through the chimney -and I want to point out that you do not posses a fireplace, nor a chimney- and stuffs gifts into sockets that hang over the fire or place them under the Christmas tree?" There was a short silence in which they just stared at each other. "And he does that for every family in the world in one night?" Another couple of staring-seconds. "That's ridiculous."
"But-" Taehyung started.
"Nope, magic is not the solution for every fantasy of you strange humans," Yoongi interrupted him.
Taehyung had to admit that he was a little disappointed. It would have been cool if Santa existed.
"But how come fairies exist?" he asked the blue-haired.
"We fairies are born from the creativity of the little ones. A child's imagination is so powerful that with every newborn a fairy is born, too. But once they grow up and begin to neglect the power of their own mind, we die. That's why we barely become older than twenty." A sad glow shimmered in the fairy man's eyes.
"But you're older than twenty. At least you look like that," Taehyung half stated half asked.
Yoongi's face brightened and he sat up. "Christmas fairies are special. We're created by the spirit of Christmas. We're born with the children's joy for Christmas and we die with the last thought of it." The blue-haired sounded proud.
Thinking about what he just heard, Taehyung stared at the ceiling. The tree's lights made it glow with their colors.
"You look unsatisfied," the blue-haired said and landed on Taehyung's chest.
The other placed his arms under his head to look at the fairy. "You always just see winter. It's cold and dark. What about flowers and sun and green leaves?" he asked.
"Who needs all this when you've got snow and sparkling decoration and sweets and alcohol?" the small man asked.
"But there is no snow," Tae whined.
"So...," Yoongi began with a sly look, "if you had a wish for Christmas it would be snow?"
"Yes! Absolutely." Taehyung sat up abruptly, almost making Yoongi fall into his lap. With a fast move, he caught the fairy before his delicate wings could be crunched. "Sorry."
The small man's face was not amused. However, he snapped his petit fingers and suddenly the big, fluffy flakes of snow fell from the ceiling and began to cover the closets and the Christmas tree.
To say that Tae was amazed would be an understatement. Yoongi was convinced that the other's eyes would fall out if they became any wider.
"Oh my god!" Taehyung squealed and stood up, the fairy sitting on his palm with a happy grin.
Like a child, he tried to catch the flakes with his tongue and chuckled when the cold stung his skin. This was amazing. Slowly, he lay on the carpet again and stared at the ceiling. The white fluffy balls sparkled in the colors of the tree's illumination, and he could hear them hitting the floor with a soft rustle. For some minutes, he just watched and listened. Now it truly felt like Christmas.
"I love magic," he mumbled and caught snow with his hands.
"I can see that," Yoongi chuckled and looked happily at him.
Taehyung turned his head at the endearing sound of the fairy's laughter. And widened his eyes in awe when he saw the latter's wings which reflected the colorful lightening, too. And then he felt like dying from cuteness when Yoongi suddenly grinned widely. His chest became light and bubbly.
For some minutes he just admired the rainbow wings and enjoyed the soft voice of Frank Sinatra that dribbled from the sound system while the fairy watched the snowflakes. It was peaceful. But then Yoongi wiggled his wings and some of the fairy dust Taehyung had seen first when the other had sneezed trickled onto his hand, and a wild thought plopped into his mind.
"Can you make me fly like Peter Pan?" he asked the blue-haired who turned around at his words.
"I can make you fly, but who's Peter Pan?" the small man asked with a tilted head.
Taehyung mused if the story was short enough to be told, but then he decided it was not. "Long story," he cut it, "Do I have to think of something positive to fly?"
Yoongi stared at him in confusion. "If I had to think of something positive every time I'd like to fly, I would be glued to the floor," the fairy deadpanned.
Taehyung tried to explain that this procedure only applied to people without wings, but, at some point, he gave up the discussion and simply asked the blue-haired to make him fly. When he did so, a mischievous smile curled the small man's lips and he asked him if he was sure. Of course, he was! Who would not want to fly? It was the biggest dream of manhood to soar through the sky without a machine. He nodded frantically.
The fairy stood up and flew over to his left foot, and then he ruffled his hair and made lots of glittery dust fall onto the limb. And slowly Taehyung left leg began to lift up into air like he was a puppet whose puppeteer had decided that it was funny to just pull on one thread. Only seconds later he dangled in the air, upside down, while trying to stop his pullover from baring his stomach.
Yoongi was laughing tears.
"Haha, very funny," Taehyung growled and tried to make sense of the reversed world without getting dizzy. It felt like being held up by the ankle and slowly all the blood was rushing into his head. So, to get control of his state again, he gave up covering his stomach and reached for the carpet instead to maybe pull himself down again. The snowflakes tickled his bared skin, and his fingertips brushed over the fluff rather uselessly. A frustrated whine escaped his lips and he looked at the fairy with a disappointed frown.
The laughter quieted down a little when the blue-haired saw his face, and then the small man apparently decided that he had had enough fun and ruffled his hair over the rest of Taehyung's body. Like he was floating in water, his body was now hovering under the ceiling of his room and Yoongi was looking at him expectantly.
Not knowing what to do, Taehyung tried to imitate swimming hoping it would bring him forwards, but all that happened was that he started to rotate. Another gush of chuckles flooded the room.
"You have to think of it!" Yoongi explained amused.
So, Taehyung imagined how his swimming moves transported him over the window, and, indeed, he moved. Slowly he understood how it worked and became better in maneuvering, though Yoongi's laughter told him how stupid he must look.
When he reached the window, he turned around and pushed himself off to fly over to the kitchen door.
"This is the best Christmas I ever had!" he shouted and made the superman move.
"Mine, too," he heard the fairy and turned his head back confused.
With a bump he collided with the doorframe. "Ouch. But isn't this your first Christmas?"
The blue-haired tilted his head. "Well, technically yes. But it could have become my worst, too, ay?"
Taehyung thought about that for a moment, and then nodded absently. If he had not found the small man, he would have spent Christmas in a dark closet. What a horrible thought.
"How did you end up in my cupboard anyways?" he asked when he pushed himself over to the couch where Yoongi was already sitting.
"Don't know," the other replied with a shrug and sat down on his knee when he had brushed away the snow and had seated himself safely, "I fell asleep on the liquor store on the Christmas market and woke up in your cupboard. Was pretty creepy." The fairy shuddered.
With an understanding smile, Taehyung ruffled through the blue hair and made glitter fall down on his leg. This was too adorable. "Cute," he whispered in awe.
"I'm not cute," the fairy growled and shot him a dark look.
But Taehyung was distracted by something else. They had completely forgotten about the liquor. Mulled wine was a must have on Christmas. With big eyes he turned his attention to the still frowning man with the now tousled hair.
"Can you summon liquor?" he asked curious and tried smoothing down the blue strands again with the only result of getting more glitter on his leg.
"Of course," the fairy answered as if that was not something special.
And with the snap of his fingers Yoongi made two steaming mugs with Bordeaux liquid hover in front of them.
"Can I keep you?" Taehyung asked when he grabbed his out of the air and the delicious smell of Christmas spices tickled his nostrils.
Yoongi did not answer. He was already gulping down his smaller cup. What a weird fairy.
Some hours later, they were pretty drunk and lightheaded and sang along with Sinatra, though Yoongi just brabbled along the words he could guess right. The snow had piled up on the shelfs, the bed and the blinking Christmas tree, and it was already dark outside.
And suddenly, in the middle of the finishing accord of Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer, the music cut off and the tree went dark. Flabbergasted they stared at the dead sound system.
"A blackout," Taehyung stated after some seconds.
"A what?" the blue-haired slurred.
"A blackout."
Silence.
"I'll get some candles," Taehyung suggested and stood up, placing Yoongi on the imprint of his seat because the rest was covered in snow.
He stepped through the deep fluffy white on his carpet, that almost reached his knees, and stumbled into the kitchen to find some old tea candles or something similar. In the dark, he rummaged through shelfs and drawers and gathered every candle and lighter he could find. He also found a peeler he had been searching for weeks, an old pack of condoms, five small bottles of booze, a sock he had missed since last Christmas, an old silver ring with a big blue stone (which he had never seen before), three pencils, a used ear plug, and a wrinkled potato that had already developed into a plant. Ten minutes later he was back but stopped in his tracks when he saw the small bundle on the couch.
The fairy had curled up into a small ball and was sleeping. Like a soft blanket, the sparkling snowflakes had covered the once snow-free seat and the small body, and the filigree wings glistened in the dim light that shone through the window. It looked magical.
With a wide smile, Taehyung stumbled back through the deep snow and threw the candles onto his bed, before he laid next to Yoongi and curled around the small ball protectively. Only now, he realized that the snow wasn't really cold. Weird.

Taehyung must have fallen off the couch, because when he woke up he lied on the carpet. Or rather on the thick layer of snow on the carpet. Tired he tilted his head to see if Yoongi still slept on the couch, but to his dismay his blue-haired friend was gone. Confused he looked around the room, but apart from the blinking Christmas tree nothing moved.
Until something tickled on his chest. Shocked, he looked down to find a small hump under his pullover that began to move. A second later, a sleepy Yoongi peaked out from under the V of his neckline and rubbed over his eyes. The blue hair was messed up and glittery and the Wings were a little creased, but apart from that the fairy looked satisfied.
The overload of cuteness made Taehyung whine and laugh at the same time, and he blew off some of the glitter from the tangled blue hair.
"Why're you under my shirt?" he asked, not daring to move to not ruin the wings any further.
"Got cold," was all the blue-haired answered and then he crawled out completely and stretched his wings, only to keep seated on Taehyung's chest. "What do we do today?"
Taehyung smiled widely. He never had been happier.
There was no problem with keeping a little Christmas deco in the room all year, was there?

It's a little late to come up with a Christmas story, but I didn't get to finish it back then. The next one shot might also take some time. I'll write it whenever I might have time.
