Chapter 23: Intruders and Authority
Hi everyone, SK here!
So as of now, Aulerie is canon and both Red and Leaf somehow made it through the Route on their Valerie chase. Will they Leaf get to reunite with her best friend this chapter? Let's find out.
I hope you enjoy this chapter!
Verity
"Wait, how do you know Valerie?" the brown-haired girl- Leaf I guess?- asks me, sounding incredulous. "Unless... she became a fairy, Red! Just as I thought!"
"Hold your horses," the boy named Red says, still staring in semi-shock at me. I guess he's surprised to see fairies are real, huh? "You both might be talking about different Valeries."
"That's true," I point out. This guy's got a brain in his skull I suppose. "Describe her for me."
"Um..." Leaf trails away for a second, thinking to herself. "She has dark reddish-brown wavy hair, purple and golden eyes. She's shy but she has a heart of gold."
I start to grin, but stop myself when I remember that I'm supposed to keep a poker face. Yep, that's our Valerie. "So it looks like we're talking about the same person then."
The human girl smiles at me. "Then that means you've seen her!" she exclaims, sounding hopeful.
"I have," I say warily, "and I can tell you more about her if you can tell me how you knew her. I can't just go disclosing information for anyone you know."
"Leaf and Valerie were best friends," Red says promptly, speaking up for the girl- his girlfriend maybe? "They went to school together, grew up together, and were in the same club together."
I begin to think; Valerie did mention that she and her friends were in a club together when she was a human. "What's the name of the club?" I ask them both, looking to Leaf to answer. If she can answer right, then I know that she's not some kind of impostor.
"The Fairy Club," the girl in question answers promptly. "But formally- like in the yearbook and stuff- it's called the Myths Club."
Good enough for me. "Good news, you passed my test," I tell her with a grin. She smiles back, although I can sense that she's still in a little bit of shock. "So tell me again what you're both doing here? Because I think you know that you're not in your world anymore."
"Something happened in our world," Red answers, sounding a little confused. I hope he isn't hoping that I explain it to him because I'm not the one that knows the most about this situation. "It's caused every single person, save for me and Leaf so far, to be driven to madness. I think they also hate fairies as well, because the fairies that performed the spell were chased. That brings me to my next question." His eyes narrow. "Why would you perform that spell on, as far as I know, the entirety of humanity?"
"I wasn't the one who did it," I say defensively. "And I know that the fairy who did perform the spell didn't do it intentionally."
"Intentionally or not," Red says warily, "it's my job to protect everyone."
"Protect everyone?" I repeat, my eyes narrowing. "Who exactly are you?"
"I'm the Champion," he answers in a proud manner. "I am the Champion of the Kanto region, and was elected to become the Leader of the Champion's Court, a group that consists of Champions from all regions. We make a lot of the decisions for everybody; I have a lot of power here, Miss Verity, so I suggest you give me my answers."
"Or...?" I cross my arms. I'm not letting some boy boss me around, even if he is the supposed "Champion".
"If the people want to eliminate you and there's evidence for me that fairies will cause us harm, then I will," he says quietly.
I gulp. What? Is he serious? Fairies have done nothing to humans for the past... I don't know, forever?
"Red, calm down," Leaf says, speaking up for me. "There's no evidence that fairies are bad."
"Well, one of our own did poison all of your minds," I point out, because let's face it, that's what happened. "But I can assure you that it was on accident, we don't want any trouble with you all."
"See? I-" Leaf cuts herself off, and it takes me a few seconds to figure out why. Voices, voices that I can recognize as my brother and his (hopefully) now-girlfriend, start to echo throughout the branches and make their way toward us.
"VERITY!" August shouts, although I can't see his figure through the trees yet.
"You have to stop shouting," comes the voice of Valerie, and I see Leaf's breath hitch. "You're going to hurt your throat if you do."
I roll my eyes at this interaction, but I know that this is a good thing because it means that they've made up at least. "I'm over here," I shout back at them, hoping they hear me.
"Race you," I hear August say, and a few seconds later he bursts through the trees beside me. He's still laughing when I nudge him and point in front of me. He notices the two humans and regains his composure in a few short seconds.
"Um," he says, sounding unsure of what to do. "Who are you, and what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here."
"My name is Red, and this is Leaf," Red introduces. "We're here because we're hoping to ensure that you fairies are not in fact trying to harm all of us humans. Who are you?"
August fidgets with his scarf for a moment, clearly nervous. "I'm August Ketchum-Yvonne, and I'm the next Leader of the Light fairies. And why are you guys in charge of tha-"
"Red's the Champion, he's like the human's Leader," I explain to him before he can further question Red. He quickly shuts up after this, mumbling a small "sorry" at the Champion.
Before anyone else can talk, Valerie promptly bursts through the trees and straight into August. Luckily, she doesn't knock him over. She just laughs, straightening out the hem of her dress as she steps out from behind him. "No fair, you run too..." her voice trails away as she spots Leaf.
The two girls stop and stare at each other, neither of them moving for a second. "Valerie?" asks the human girl, looking at her friend. Leaf starts trembling. My heart feels so heavy looking on at the both of them... I would never know what it feels like to be in both of their situations. "Is that you?"
Valerie, biting the top of her lip, nods tearfully at her friend. "It's me, Leaf," she says, sounding like she's about to cry. "How did you-"
"I have no idea," Leaf answers with a smile and an almost-laugh, and just as quick as this all started, they run up to each other and enter what must be the most heartfelt hug I have seen in a long while.
After a few seconds they pull apart, but Leaf is still gripping Val's shoulders. "Oh my Arceus you're an actual fairy," she says in slight awe. "The others would literally faint if they saw this."
Valerie chuckles to herself. "Yeah, they probably would." She glances at Red. "It's nice to see you again, Red."
"Same to you," he says, his voice a little warmer than before. "I'm glad we both found you."
"Yes, it's nice to see you both again," she says kindly. "But I'm afraid that you guys have to go, humans aren't allowed to-"
"No, you're not understanding," Red says, interrupting her. "There was a spell that drove everyone to insanity, except for Leaf and I, a little while ago. Valerie, you know my responsibilities, and I'm just here looking for enough evidence that I can use to avoid war."
"W-War?" she stutters, shaking a little bit. She hugs her arms close to her, despair washing over her voice as she talks. "This... this is all my fault."
Leaf looks at her, confused. "How can this be your fault?"
"Because..." Valerie turns away from the two humans. "Because I'm the one that performed the spell."
Now it's Red's turn to look at her in an equally confused fashion. "Excuse me?"
"It was a mistake," Valerie sighs, guilt evident in her voice. "I won't reveal much, but there is a specific spell that can either bring joy or harm... my original intentions were to affect you guys to help you move on from me," she admits, Leaf looking at her friend in slight shock once more. "But when I got to doing it, it backfired... this particular spell paints everyone to be in the mindset I was in, and because of various things that had happened to me... I couldn't control it, I'm so sorry." She sounds so heartbroken.
"But we weren't affected-"
"That's because this kind of spell can't affect people that I care for," Valerie says, smiling weakly at the two of them. "You both were spared, and I think the rest of our club was as well. Still, just because some people were spared doesn't justify it at all..."
"It wasn't your fault those things happened to you," August says comfortingly, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"It was partially my fault," she tells him evenly. Valerie turns back to Red, who's been listening with a thoughtful expression on his face, and continues. "The spell was my mistake, but fairies don't want anything to do with humans. We live on our own, in our own world, and we have minimal interactions with you all. There is no reason to go to war."
Before anyone can answer Valerie's statement, yet another new voice rings out. "Over here," it says in distinctly Heliux's tone, and the three of us fairies turn to see him and Layra come out into the open.
"Heliux?" August sputters. "How did you-"
"His Element is Space, he can see everything," I tell my brother, saving the Minister from an explanation. Heliux steps toward the two humans, Layra standing in front of us- to protect us I guess? It's a nice thought at least.
"What are you doing here?" the Light Minister asks them both. "More importantly, how did you get here?"
"Who are you?" Red counters, while Leaf just remains silent. She's smart.
"I don't have to identify myself because I am not the one who is trespassing," Heliux retorts. "Now, who are you, and how did you get here?"
"I'm Leaf, and this is my boyfriend Red," she says quickly. So they are boyfriend and girlfriend, just like I thought. "We're here to uh... stop a war." She glances at Red, prompting him to explain what she means before Heliux has a freak-out on them.
"I am the current Champion of the Kanto Region, and the Leader of the Champion's Court; I have a lot of power. Due to the current situation that Valerie here," he points to her, "has caused, everyone is upset and has hatred toward your kind. I know my fellow Champions, they will want to eliminate you all. Now, the spell was apparently an accident, but that does not discount for the fact that it happened. I want to observe the fairies and make sure they are not harmful; if I see evidence for that, then I will fight against a war or elimination should it happen, mark my words."
Heliux casts a tiny glance at Layra, causing her to close her eyes for a split second. She's probably using her powers to see if they're lying or not, I realize. She opens them, gives her boyfriend a tiny nod, and steps up beside him. "My name is Layra," she says, holding out her hand, "and this is Heliux. We are the Ministers of the Dark and Light fairies respectively. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Red shakes Layra's hand, the tension in his shoulders falling. "It's nice to meet you too, Layra." the Dark Minister repeats the action with Leaf, who delightedly takes the fairy's hand.
"It's so amazing to be able to finally meet fairies for real," Leaf sputters out as she shakes the Dark Minister's hand, unable to contain her excitement. Heliux begins to look slightly confused, probably wondering how she even knew about fairies in the first place if she did not get affected by the spell, so Valerie jumps in.
"Leaf was one of my friends at school, she was a part of my club," she explains quickly to both of the Ministers. "Red visited pretty frequently too; I know both of them very well and they're both equally trustworthy."
"In that case, it's nice to be able to meet one of Valerie's friends, I've heard that you're very dear to her," Layra says kindly to Leaf. "But you should really know that we're nothing special."
Leaf stares blankly at the Dark Minister. "You're fairies- I think that makes you at least a little special."
She laughs at the human girl's statement. "I suppose that's true," she admits. "Now, Red, from what we've heard, we can trust you and Leaf. We don't want war either, that's the last thing we want, and I think you're smart for thinking of getting precautionary evidence ready. So, here's what we'll do. Heliux and I will take you both back to the Colony, our home, and tell everyone that you are new Elementals- in your terms, that's basically people who are about to become fairies. If we tell fairies that you're watching them then automatically they're going to try and be on their best behavior and I think you want it to be as natural as possible, right?"
"Right," Red confirms, sounding a little shock at the speed that Layra can come up with a plan with.
"August, Verity, you two are both the closest thing we have to your parents here," the Dark Minister says suddenly, turning to both of us. "You deserve to have at least some authority on this, so what do you think?"
August thinks for a moment, then responds to her question. "I think that considering everything, it's a good plan."
I nod, adding to his words. "We don't want to go to war and I don't think humans do either, besides this is the easiest way to do it." I think everyone would be super nice either way, but Layra's right about that quote-on-quote natural reaction.
"Valerie, as our soon-to-be Queen, you must have a say in this also," Heliux says, turning toward his daughter. Valerie herself looks a little shocked at this, but I suppose he's right. Just like we're the next Leaders, she's the next Queen. The three of us deserve to have a little more authority around here. "What are your thoughts?"
"Like I said, I trust Red," she says. "I trust Red and Leaf. If they need to look around to make sure that we're safe, then they should be able to do it. But, I have one condition."
Everyone looks expectantly toward her, including me.
"The sun will be going down in an hour or two, and by midnight Red you need to make your decision and go back to the humans- and we also have to explain to the fairies the truth, because they don't deserved to be lied to forever, even if it's just a tiny lie like this. You're also not allowed to tell anyone what you see here or how you got here to protect us, but you can say it if you're trying to prove our innocence. Leaf, you can't say anything either- not even to the rest of our friends because yes, they will be excited, but it's a risk that I'm not willing to take. And please don't tell them that I'm alive either," she adds mournfully. "I know it hurts but I-"
"You can't risk it, I completely understand," Leaf says, finishing her friend's sentence. Red echoes his girlfriend's affirmation, and it looks like everything is a go. Both the Ministers nod at her, tiny smiles on their faces. I'm not surprised- Valerie is finally taking charge. Good for her.
"Mom and Dad deserve to know the truth though," protests August. "They're the real Leaders."
"That's fair," I agree, looking at Valerie.
She nods. "Yeah, that makes sense. We'll tell them after we get back."
Heliux is tapping his foot impatiently. "Come now, we're wasting all this time here talking and you only have until midnight to make your decision, Red. Let's go." He begins to head back to the Colony with Layra, and the rest of us follow them.
"Wait Valerie," Leaf says suddenly as we walk, "what did he mean when he said soon-to-be Queen?"
"Oh," Valerie answers rather sheepishly. "Well um- okay, I'll try and explain it. So you see Auggie's-" August blushes at the nickname, he actually blushed at something, so they're definitely together. Yay! "- and Verity's wings? See how they're lighter or darker? Well that's what classifies you as a Light or Dark fairy. They're going to be the Leaders- the highest position in the Colony, and Heliux and Layra are the Ministers, the second highest position. Since I have one pair of light wings and one pair of dark wings I'm neither, which makes me the next Queen- the highest overall position. So um... yeah." She twirls a strand of her hair around her left pointer finger while Leaf just stares at her in awe.
"I'm best friends with a Queen, awesome," she whispers.
"Oh shut up," Valerie protests, blushing a little from the attention. "I'm not a Queen yet."
"Not gonna."
Valerie playfully swats at Leaf, causing the latter to laugh and try and reciprocate the action. Okay, I'll admit it, I'm a little jealous of the relationship that Leaf has with Val.
"So, tell us about yourselves a little," says Red, clearly trying to prompt my brother and I into a conversation. "How do you know Valerie?"
"Val and I met a couple days ago when she first became a fairy," I tell him. "I'd like to think we're pretty close friends."
"We are," confirms Valerie herself, making me smile.
"And you?" asks Leaf, looking at August.
"Oh- I... well, uh..." I inwardly snicker while he attempts to explain how he illegally snuck out of the Colony for over a year, then basically rejected Valerie's confession, and oh boy now they are together in a relationship. "It was- still is- totally not allowed but I snuck out to see Valerie every night for a year to help comfort her because of uh- you know, that guy. When she became a fairy our friendship just became stronger and..." So, skipping the part where you almost dumped her to avoid her best friend's wrath I see, smart. "... well, now she's my girlfriend."
"Wait- whaaaat!?" shrieks Leaf, shaking Val's shoulders over and over. "You're his girlfriend?" I notice the Ministers up ahead turn their heads slightly at this.
Valerie blushes, nodding. "Yeah, we literally just became a couple an hour ago."
Leaf squeals and hugs her friend, while Red watches the interaction warmly. She then turns toward August, her eyes narrowing and she points a finger at him. "If you hurt this wonderful girl right here I'll end you," she says, sounding completely serious. Well technically... I could say what he did to hurt her, but for the sake of August's life, I won't.
The fairy in question puts both of his hands up. "I promise not to," he says quickly. "That's the last thing I'd want to do."
"Glad we're on the same page," Leaf answers, grinning again. "This is so cool, I'm so happy for you both! Wait, so August, does that mean you get upgraded from your Leader position and become king?"
"Well technically I'm not the Leader yet," he explains, then pauses. It takes me a second to realize why- I was so caught up in Val's heart getting unbroken that I forgot about the golden rule of Leaders, that rule being that they can't fall in love. "But uh... to be honest, I don't know," he continues. "We'll figure it out."
Leaf says something, but I miss it because now I'm beginning to think. If I remember correctly, that rule was put in place a long time ago to prevent Leaders from wanting to have a child. For fairies to have children they have to snap their Necklaces together and them boom, you're pregnant, but if two Leaders were to do that they'd do something that has the same effect as performing a Balance Ritual. As a Queen, Valerie wouldn't even have a Necklace, so couldn't they still be in love? Or is there just something I'm missing? I guess technically they would still be able to have a child, because you know what is a thing, because how else would Valerie exist-
Oh Zagan, I don't want that image of Heliux burned into my mind... let's join back into the conversation.
"... to say, it's funny that I researched fairies so much and now I became one," I tune into Valerie's observation. "What a coincidence!"
"And not just any one, you're the Queen," Leaf says, jabbing Valerie's side which causes her to giggle. While the two humans and Valerie talk, I take the opportunity to congratulate my brother.
"Hey," I whisper to him, and he glances at me. I give him a thumbs-up. "I'm happy for you and Valerie, Auggs."
"Thanks," he says, sounding a little bit more exhausted than I expected. "I just don't know how Mom and Dad are going to take it. I mean it's not like we have Necklaces to put together, but still..."
"It's not like they're in any position to oppose you," I point out. "They're both Leaders and they stayed together. They'd be total hypocrites if they called you and Valerie out. While it may be against the rules, it's not their right to stop you from having love when they got to have it themselves."
He smirks at me. "When did you get so insightful?"
I shrug. "I was always insightful. You're just noticing it now."
August rolls his eyes at me as the group of us reenters the Colony. "Remember, you're both new soon-to-be fairies," chirps Valerie. "But first, we need to get you to Ash and Serena- they're the Leaders."
"Take Red and Leaf to the Council's Court," Heliux commands. "It's a private area so we won't have any prying ears. Layra and I will go fetch His Darkness and Her Lightness."
I will never understand Heliux's obsession with the formal titles- does he want one of his own or something? "Come guys, let's go," I say, August and I leading everyone to the Council's Court while the Ministers go off to fetch our parents.
August and I leading. It sounds right.
I smile at my brother, although he's facing in the other direction so he doesn't see it. If our parents have to die one day far in the future, if I have to lead this Colony of fairies, then there's no other person I'd rather do it with.
~~~~~~~~~~
"That is fine, Red," says Mom. They got here a couple minutes ago, and have listened to Red and Leaf explain their case. "You and Leaf can observe what you need to."
"So you're the Champion? I'd love to hear what Pokemon battles are like now," says Dad, who earns himself a sly nudge from Mom because he goes off-topic.
"I'd be happy to tell you about it Sir," Red says respectfully. I've got to hand it to the guy, for all of his seriousness he does seem genuine.
Mom smiles at the two. "You can both go out now, we can catch up with you later."
I sigh in relief, thank goodness we've finally got this sorted out. I just want to get this supposed evaluation over with. I'm about to follow them out, August and Valerie with me, when Mom calls us back. "Not you three," she says. "I'd like a word."
August gulps beside me, and I don't blame him. Mom only says that when we do something bad, although now that I think about it, we haven't done anything. Unless she's referring to August and Valerie's relationship- but then why would she call me back too? Also, how would she even know about it in the first place?
"What is it?" I ask warily, and of course this kind of tone sets off my parents.
"While we're proud that you could make that decision about Red and Leaf," Dad begins, "it was not your decision to make. You should have gotten us before you brought them back to the Colony which could have endangered all of the fairies."
"But they were safe," I protest. Is this seriously what we're all getting in trouble for- even Valerie? She doesn't deserve this.
"You two aren't Leaders yet," Mom points out calmly. "And you Valerie, you aren't the Queen yet. Yes, I understand that you need to have some authority, but this was a major decision. You should have let the adults handle it." Adults. Are we not that?
"With all due respect, Your Lightness," Heliux says, thankfully speaking up for us, "August, Verity, and Valerie have grown up enough to make educated decisions about things. Layra and I were there as well, and we could verify statements... well, she could. The point is, they went about things very smoothly and professionally. You should be proud of how August and Verity handled the situation; I know I'm proud of Valerie for demonstrating her authority." He doesn't look at her, but Valerie glances away from him for a split second.
I nod at the Minister, and so does August and Valerie. We look back expectantly at our parents, who unfortunately don't seem to have changed their opinion.
"We are proud of you," Dad emphasizes, and although he's usually genuine, his voice is beginning to sound fake. "But like your mom said, you guys don't have the authority to make big decisions. And for you," he adds, looking at Valerie, "I know I'm not your parent, but I am, until you get your position, your Leader. While you are going to become the Queen shortly, right now you do not have the authority to make potentially dangerous decisions like these."
Valerie looks down, and I see August getting upset. Uh oh. August doesn't usually get angry very easily but when he does he gets furious. "But why shouldn't we get authority around here?" he challenges. "Valerie is going to be Queen in about a week, so you might as well start respecting her wishes now."
"While that might be true," Mom admits, her voice firm, "that doesn't mean the two of you are going to be Leaders any time soon. Yes, you can have authority over minor things, you can do some of our responsibilities like attending meetings with Her Majesty, but that does not mean that you get to decide willy-nilly that two humans who aren't even Elementals that you just met can come to the Colony."
"Mom, we're almost five centuries old," August protests. "My Element is Creation, Verity's is Destruction. We were literally born to be Leaders. I know I speak for Verity too that we do not want to spend our lives living as backups for you both. I want to do something. I want to lead, Mom." Valerie's just looking back and forth between our parents and us, looking a little scared that a fight's going to break out.
"August is right Serena," Layra agrees, making Mom wince. "These two have waited for so long, and while they might wait a while longer, it's about time that they get to have some kind of influence around the Colony, wouldn't you say?"
"With minor-"
"Not with minor things," I say. "We're smart enough to make decisions that affect everyone. We should be able to do that."
"Name one," Dad says, sounding amused. I love both of my parents but right now I want to rip them to pieces. How dare they belittle us like this? We deserve to be able to do something.
"Just today," August begins, clasping Valerie's hand, "I got into a relationship with Valerie. I know Leaders can't be in love, but she won't ever have a Necklace so it's fine. We weighed the pros and cons-" Valerie tosses me a look that desperately tells me that they in fact did not weigh the pros and cons, "- and we decided that we're allowed to be happy."
"That's against the rules August," Mom states blandly. She looks toward Heliux, clearly wanting him to intervene. "That's against the rules," she repeats, as if that's a command that's supposed to prompt Heliux to go on a yelling spree. I mean, usually it would be, but not today apparently.
"August has a point," he admits, looking uncomfortable. "Valerie will not ever have a Necklace, so therefore they are allowed to be in a relationship."
"Just because she's your daughter doesn't mean she can get away with whatever she wants," snaps Mom. My eyes widen- did she really just accuse Heliux of that? What is going on?
Heliux stands his ground, good for him. "I'm not just saying this because Valerie is my daughter- that is not the point of this conversation, Serena." Oh crap, he's not using the formal titles. "But August, your mother is partially right. Leaders, traditionally, should not be in a relationship."
"But you're not a Leader yet," Layra chirps. Darnit, she beat me to it, I was gonna say the same thing. "You two are allowed to be in a relationship- congratulations by the way," she adds, earning a small smile from both. "And when August meets with the Spirits for the first time, then the relationship can be discussed there. But, both of you," she says, now addressing our parents, "August and Valerie's relationship is fine. I say this as your Minister Ash, and as your friend Serena."
"Why are you fighting us on this?" I protest, just asking the question straight. They both go silent, a sign that foresees instant death in my future. "What's so wrong with us having a little authority to make decisions?"
"Because you aren't Leaders yet," Mom says, walking forward with a flourish. In a flustered manner, Dad follows her. "You won't be Leaders for a long time." She walks out of the room, clearly upset. Dad just follows her out without another word.
I stare after them. "Did we do something wrong?" I ask the Ministers.
Heliux shakes his head. "No, I think that there is still some part of them that is refusing to accept that you've grown up enough to be able to have that authority. Layra and I will go talk to them- oh, and before I forget, congratulations the both of you," he adds to the new happy couple. "I'm happy for you both."
"Th-Thank you," Valerie stutters out, a small smile evident on her face. Heliux just smiles back at her, and he and Layra leave the Council's Court shortly after.
The three of us pause. "Well, as three people who are in line for some super big positions," August begins, "I think we should take today to have some fun while we can. We can show Red and Leaf around, and isn't today one of our party nights?"
"It's a new moon or full moon or half moon or something like that," I explain to Valerie when she gets confused. "Moon Parties usually go late into the night and start at sundown, it's always super fun. Lots of drinking, music, dancing... just partying in general."
"Sounds fun," Valerie says enthusiastically. "So what are we just standing in here for?"
I grin at her. "Good point. Let's go!"
So interesting chapter I hope? Yeah, here Ash and Serena were a bit of the bad guys... but this fight needed to happen. And yes, both Ministers approve of Aulerie. :D
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Stay tuned for the next chapter where the legend of drunk Heliux may actually be written as a part of the actual story instead of just a random chapter...
(Edit: Shoot I forgot about drunk Heliux but I will go see if I can add him in now sorry >_<)
