Glossary

Edit 10/08/20: The Fairy's Poison, the sequel to this book, is scheduled to be released on September 19th, 2020.  For updates and for extra fun stuff regarding this book, please check my Random book, as I've been posting there pretty frequently.

Welcome to the glossary, written by me, although Heliux and Layra are helping me edit it.

Here you can find drawings of the characters, as well as important information relevant to the story.  This is intended to be read AFTER you complete the book, however: there are some parts that would be useful to have while you read, such as character sketches.  The glossary will be separated into two parts, spoiler free and spoiler full.  If you are coming here and you have NOT finished the book, please only read through the spoiler free section as, well... spoilers, duh.

NOTE: I can't restrict access to this part, but I recommend that you have met the following criteria in order to not spoil yourself:
1. To view CHARACTER SKETCHES (spoiler free, ironic I know): have read up to chapter fifteen past January 3rd, 2021
2. To view anything else: have read the book in full past January 3rd, 2021

(If anyone is wondering about the date, I have gone through and edited every single one of the chapters, and I finished on that date.  So yeah.  BUT those edits were minor edits, so as long as you've read the story past June 2020 you're good.)

Let's get to it.

I'm probably not the only one who wants to own some of these dresses.  Especially Bonnie's and Serena's haha.  Which design is your favourite?

This marks the end of the spoiler free section.  Anything from this point forward will include spoilers for the book; read at your own will.

Fairy Hierarchy and their Roles

Ranking from Most Importance to Least Importance...

King/Queen

Leaders

Ministers

Advisors

Other Fairies

Leaders

There is one Leader for the Light Fairies, and one for the Dark Fairies; they are supposed to work together to lead the two groups of fairies in harmony.  Leaders of the Light Fairies always have the Element of Creation, wheras Dark Leaders always have the Element of Destruction.  Some of the most powerful Leaders may also have mastered the Elements of Life and Death (respectively) without even realizing it.  Many refer to them as kings or queens, even though they are not.

Ministers

Known as the Ministers, the Magic Ministers, Heliux and Layra, are responsible for many things in the Colony.  They are responsible for educating new fairies as well as teaching them how to use their magic.  They also are required to prepare a new Leader for their position when the old one passes away.  Ministers, as well as the Leaders, are needed to be present for an Initialization; it will not work without them.  The Ministers are also supposed to guide others in their decisions, especially the Leaders, and if worse comes to worse, they are expected to be able to completely rebuild an entire Colony of fairies.  The Ministers are also immortal, to which they explain that it was gifted to them by Lita.  However, this might not be entirely true...

Heliux: It is true, I do not know what she is saying.  Please ignore that statement.

Edit: Seriously.. -_-

Advisors

Advisors play a similar role to the Ministers, although less is required of them.  While Ministers are there to guide the Leaders, Advisors are there to help the other fairies along.  They also have the unique ability to see all Elementals, fairies and humans alike, wherever they are.  Advisor fairies are also usually exceptionally skilled in medicinal magic.

Other Fairies

All the other fairies that stay within the Colony still have roles to play.  They just do the regular jobs among the Colony, like running restaurants, the Battle Arena, or performances.  They also are responsible for the upkeep of the Colony as a whole, and are in charge of patrolling for any potential new fairies that the Legendaries bring them.  Their main jobs are to look after and control their respective Elements.

King/Queen

"Her Majesty is neither a Light nor Dark Fairy.  She has the power to destroy the world whenever she pleases, yet she also has the capabilities to birth a new one.  Wait, are you writing this down for others to see!?"
-Heliux

"Yes, Heliux, why do you think she asked you?"
-Layra

Facts about Fairies!

How one becomes one

If you have an Element, you are born with it.  However, this doesn't necessarily mean that you become a fairy.  Legendary and Mythical Pokemon know about all the Elementals, and they choose when a new fairy will be brought to the Forest, located near Pallet Town in the Kanto region.  They only choose the best of the best, although like you saw with Drago, they can also make mistakes.

When someone who has an Element reaches their twentieth birthday, they are taken away (with one of their own Pokemon of course) by a Legendary Pokemon and are brought to the fairies' forest.  On rare occasions, this can happen before this date, but usually the Legendaries try to avoid this.

The person is then brought to the Colony and is Initiated immediately.  If they are a Dark Fairy, training in magic can take slightly longer, but magic training usually does not last for more than a couple days and up to a week at most.  The Ministers are supposed to educate and train the fairy with magic; if another holder of that same Element is present, they are also supposed to assist in the training (for example, if a new fairy is brought in with the Element of Fire, the current holder of the Fire Necklace must help with their training, if present).  After one week, the Necklace of their Element is passed down to them, either from a stronghold with unused Necklaces or directly from the now-previous holder themselves.  If one week passes and this doesn't happen, then the newcomer perishes.

Layra: She didn't even explain what the Initiation is. *ahem* The Initiation is when we spark magic within a fairy.  Usually, when the Legendaries bring us new fairies, they have already done the work in causing their deaths and connecting the souls of Pokemon and Trainer.  If they haven't, our work becomes... messier, let's just say that- like what you saw with Ash and his Initiation.  Together, the Leader and Minister use their magic to ignite the ability to create magic in the new fairy, which is now possible because their soul is connected with their Pokemon's, making it stronger.  I hope that makes sense for all you folks reading.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot that, thanks for saving me Layra.

How long do fairies live?

Fairies do not age past age 20, and can live to be one thousand years old.  Of course, they can die before then, either by injury or illness, but if they are lucky enough to live to their thousandth birthday, they are not to live a day longer.

Most fairies are not this lucky, however, as each generation of fairies is replaced frequently.  If a Leader has lived to be at least 100 years of age, then that generation of fairies begins to be replaced by newcomers.  If they perish before then, then this does not happen.

Fairies who have never bonded with a Necklace before can live up to one week in the fairy world.  There is one exception to this, however; natural fairies, or fairies that have been born from other fairies.  We'll get to this a little later.

Of course, we all know about the two exceptions to this: Heliux and Layra.  They have been gifted immortality by Ga- whaaaattt, Heliux!?  Fine, Lita.  They have been gifted immortality by Lita, so that they can help the generations of fairies to come for all eternity.

Heliux: You can ignore that small spelling mistake that was made.
Layra: I love you, but you know saying it brings more attention to it, right?
Heliux: Hmph.

Soul Necklaces

Every single fairy wears a Necklace that relates to their specific Element that helps them to do many things:
A) Summon their Mist Pokemon to be seen by others
B) Communicate with the souls of the dead who also wore the same Necklace
C) Connects the fairy's soul with the spirit realm

Necklaces are also the holders of fairies' souls; if they take off the Necklace when they have been bonded to it, they die immediately.

Any Necklace that isn't currently being worn is put in a secret strong-hold that only the Ministers know about. Necklaces are one-of-a-kind and cannot be remade, so it is important that they are protected at all costs.

Layra: SK forgot to write this, but to anyone who doesn't know what 'bonding' means, it refers to when a fairy first puts on a Necklace.  The spirits will welcome them, judge if they are a fit suitor for the Necklace, and the fairy's soul, along with their Mist Pokemon, will become connected to the Necklace until death.  It's the moment when one becomes a true fairy.

Edit: Thanks again for that explanation, Layra.

Children and Fairies

No, whatever you have in your head, make it go away.

Basically, two fairies of opposite gender can have children by conjoining their Necklaces together; this connects their Souls and creates potential for new ones to be born.

When female fairies get pregnant it is 99.99% going to be with twins; each child inherits an Element from each of their parents.  For example, one of Ash and Serena's twins will have Serena's Creation Element, and the other will have Ash's Destruction Element.

Usually fairies that have never bonded with a Necklace before can live up to a week.  However, for fairies that have been birthed from other fairies, this is not an issue.  They are considered to be a bonded fairy already; they have the normal 1000 year lifespan of a regular fairy.  In terms of their Mist Pokemon, they will usually be taken to the human side of the Kanto Forest to get one of their own when they are young.  Fairy-born fairies, like regular fairies, do not get Initiated until they reach twenty years of age; so up until that time they look like any other human, and do not have Mist Pokemon.

Of course, child fairies receive some human-education, usually taught by their parents and the available Ministers together.

It's been seen that once in a VERY long while, a fairy can become pregnant with only one child, that child having two Elements instead of just one.  However, the last time that happened was billions of years ago, and there is nothing that exists (texts, memories), that tells of how that fairy lived their life.

Celebrations!

There's not much to say here.  However, celebration is a huge part of fairy culture.  Birthdays, especially those of the Leaders and Ministers, are taken very seriously, and any other significant events are fun days of celebration for the fairies.  They are very care-free.

Layra: She didn't say what the other events are, Heliux, people are gonna wonder!
Heliux: Just tell them then.
Layra: No, I took care of the last explanation.  You do it this time.  Pretty please?
Heliux: ...fine.

Heliux: At the Colony we celebrate a variety of events, some of which may seem odd.  Because the majority of fairies were once human themselves we do celebrate a lot of human holidays, such as Valentine's day, Halloween, Christmas, Thanks- Layra, what is it called again?
Layra: I think it's called Thanksgiving.

Heliux: Right, Thanksgiving.  We also like to celebrate more spiritual things, such as significant points on the Moon cycle, eclipses, the first day of each season, and more.  I hope that is sufficient enough.
Layra: *hugs him* You did great!
Heliux: *flustered* Hmph.

Edit: Well that was... interesting reading over, thanks you two for the adorable fluff and information.

Before peace....

As you all know, for the majority of the story, times have not been peaceful for the Light and Dark fairies.  Did things work differently?

1. Borders

The fairies' forest was split into two parts, one for the Lights, and one for the Darks.  The forest itself became imbalanced, the half on the Lights' side becoming overflowing with life.  The half on the Darks' side became overflowing with death.  In times of peace, there are no borders.

2. When fairies were brought into the realm...

New fairies were always found by the Light Fairies first.  The Light Fairies kept the original Colony after the war ended, so naturally the place where the Legendaries brought in newcomers was on their side of the forest.  A newcomer would have their Initiation done with the Light Fairies, and if they turned out to be a Dark Fairy, they would be taken to the forest's border for a Dark Fairy to fetch them.

If that fairy was a Leader, they are taken in once to meet the Leader of the other group, but after that they remain in their own Colony and do not talk with the other side.

3. Interacting with the other type of fairy

Being seen with, talking to, or simply being near the other type of fairy was very illegal.  If you wanted to, you had to sneak around, and you had to be good about it- the punishment was death.

Rituals

There is only one ritual that is important in this story (though there are many more): the Balance Ritual.  It is commonly known as the Last Resort, because, well, it is.

The Balance Ritual is conducted only when times are dire and the world is about to end.  Of course, there are times when even the Balance Ritual can't fix things and a greater force has to come in, but we're not focusing on that now.  The Balance Ritual works the majority of the time, as usually the fairies conduct it in a timely fashion.

To do it, four pillars have to be formed with the Leaders standing inside the group of them.  One of them is formed by the Ministers, another by the Elements of Light and Dark, another by the Elements of Night and Day, and another by Earth Elements.  Together, the Ministers connect their Necklaces together, and they are taken to the Spirit Bridge, the bridge that connects them to the Spirit Realm.  They must give up their Mist Pokemon; it is the power of that separation that gives the Balance Ritual its power.  When the ritual is finished the balance is reset, but all the fairies die.  The only ones that do not die are the Ministers, who are in charge of putting together a new group of fairies as fast as they can... and of course, the King/Queen helps as well, because they do not die either.

So, that's it.  That's the glossary.  If you have any remaining questions, Heliux and Layra will answer them for you.

Heliux: What?  I did not agree to this!
Layra: Oh, come on!  It'll be fun!  But everyone, please be aware that we can't answer some questions for... reasons.
Heliux: Yes, and that reason is privacy.

Comment your questions on this line!

Also: This is long overdue but we need a ship name for Heliux and Layra.  Seriously.  I'm thinking about going with Soulspaceshipping, but if any of you have REALLY GOOD suggestions, I might change it. :3

Okay, that's it with the glossary.  If you've read this far, but you haven't read through the story past January 3rd, then please, please go give it a peak.

That's all from me today, have fun reading the extras!

Edit: Also, please do check out the sequel, The Fairy's Poison, if you're interested in continuing this story.  If you do, I hope you enjoy it! :)
