We Break into a Lab

It was nightfall by the time we actually found something. And something was indeed. We had been trekking across Washington all day, I was exhausted and was living off the bits of salt water taffy I bought a few days ago. I needed sugar to function. I'm not joking, it was part of my DNA.

Anyway, it was dark now, and Wi had accidentally walked into a building. That's how we found it. The motion set off a sensor light that promptly frightened the cookies out of the rest of us.

"I think we found it." I laughed nervously.

"Maybe, come on. We need to find a way in." Will ordered.

"Should we check the roof?" Tyler asked.

"Through an air vent would be convenient." I commented.

The two of them gave me startled looks. "What?" I asked.

"I'm not going in a small air vent." Will put his hands up defensively.

"Send me then." Ryan suggested. "In fact, we don't need the roof, I found a door."

There was indeed was looked like a large cut out rectangle in the side of the building. It had a sign on it, restricted personal only. The only problem was, it had a small keypad and no door handle.

"No use if it's locked." Will pointed out.

"You'd be surprised." Wi said mysteriously.

"I got this guys." Ryan announced and stepped up to the metal rectangle.

Then he walked forward and melted right through the door.

    "Woah." I blinked.

A few seconds later there was a click and the door swung open. Revealing a smiling thirteen year-old.

"Told ya I could do it." Ryan bragged.

We walked in, our wet and worn sneakers squeaking softly on the tiled floors. There were several hallways, all lit up with bright fluorescent LED lights that made my head hurt. Thousands of doors lined the hallways, each one an identical light blue. Some had signs, or pictures. Sounds could be heard behind several. Some of them questionable, others sickening.

"Does anyone know where we're going?" Wi asked.

"There's gotta be a map around here somewhere." Tyler growled softly, his gaze had gone cold and menacing. His usual light hearted humor was gone.

"I found one." I announced, pointing to a official looking scribble on the nearby wall.

"There is a main control center, only a few hallways away." Will put his finger on the map.

"Let's hurry then, it's too empty in here." Tyler hissed.

    "Yeah, too quiet." I paused.

    "Whatever. Let's go." Will mumbled.

He twisted on his heels and started heading in the right direction. It was almost hard to keep up with him.

"Is anyone thinking this is too easy?" I asked nervously.

"We haven't gotten to the hard part." Tyler argued.

We turned a corner and Will suddenly stopped. I crashed into him.

    "Hey!" I exclaimed.

"Sh!" The other three instantly turned on me.

I glared at them and followed Will's gaze. He was looking at a door labeled, Subject containment unit. There was a curious look on his face.

"I think that's it, I think that's where Genny is." He breathed.

We all gave him a questioning look and his cheeks turned bright red.

"And of course, everyone else, I was just saying..."

"Yeah we get it, Ryan and I will go ahead, there's sure to be another air vent out in case the mechanics overheated. You three better make sure you can escape." Wi ordered, he and Ryan left.

Wi turned around last second. "Don't open that door until the lights go out." He disappeared behind two double doors.

We waited for a few minutes. I was starting to get bored and almost suggested somebody go check on him when we suddenly received company.

"Hey!" The three of us jumped and turned to see a guy in a white lab coat running towards us with some freaky identical nurses.

"Hey Tyler." Will gave a small smile. "It's the chicken flavored ladies."

He laughed. Then ran forward and extended his claws at the angry looking scientist. I didn't question it and just added it to the list of weird quirks I had yet to figure out. My fingers reached for the handle to the door, almost, so close...

    The lights went out.

The man screamed, Tyler roared, sparks flew as he tore through the ladies which I had now realized were robots.

Will pushed the door open which I had forgotten to do in my panic. The lights were out in there as well accept for a few dim emergency lights. For a moment everything was silent.

"Genny?" He called out, hoping to hear her voice.

"Will?" Two voices asked at once.

I watched as three people appeared out of the darkness and into the terrible light of the back up bulbs.

One was Genevieve, who ran towards Will and crashed into him, nearly knocking him down with a bear hug. He sighed and buried his face into her neck.

"You cut your hair." He said muffled through her shirt.

"Your wings are bigger." She replied as if in a dream.

"Excuse me? What's going on?" Asked the second young female, I recognized her as Gratuity, holding her hand and walking by her side was the small eight year-old from the photo.

"Um, we're busting you out." I said dryly, staring at the younger girl, who was looking at me oddly.

"For real? Awesome!" She exclaimed.

"Yeah, follow us, we don't have much time at all so we really have to hurry." I stamped my foot so Will and Genny would pay attention for a second and stop making gooey faces at each other.

Where was Tyler? We had only left him for a second and he should have had no problem at all taking out that one scientist. Unless there had been more an now he was being dragged to his doom some place. I tried not to think about that.

"We might have to fight our way out, so stay sharp. I'll explain everything once we're clear of the building." I said and began running back towards the open door we had come through and trying not to run into a wall.

Gratuity followed me without hesitation and Will clutched onto Genny's hand and we ran.

"Wait." Genny stopped, glancing forlornly back at the room.

"We need to get out of here." Will begged.

She bit her lip, then nodded, we picked up the pace again. I burst out the door and found the walls were scored with claw marks like Wolverine had come running through. I guess Tyler had decided to work ahead.

We turned a corner and were instantly met with dozens upon dozens of foot solders.

"Uh, not this way!" I yelled and pushed them back.

My gut twisted in despair and I found the other way was blocked as well.

We were trapped.

The black-clad warriors started shoot in tranquilizers at us an a few immediately got stuck in Will's wings due to the fact he had spread them out in front of Genny. And the rest of us for some cover.

There was a small pain in my neck and the last thing I processed before hitting the floor was the building was shaking violently. Like some one had hit it with explosives, or an earthquake.

The I succumbed to the dreamless sterile darkness.
