He can transform into an orange, black and white fox, although a kitsune is a more proper way of calling it.  He has a full form, an orange, white and black fox, and a half shift form, with the ears, tail and sharp claws.  Kitsunes are mythological being in Japanese folklore, some of them serve Inari as messengers and are loyal protectors to humans, but some are mischievous and cunning.

【Personality】
Kaede was always a little bit mature for his age, he has (had) many younger siblings (5 to be exact) and took in younger boys to be a part of his little gang, so you could say he was the leader.  He was everyone's hero, he fought off all the scary monsters for his sisters, patched up the cuts and bruises of his brothers, cared for and protected those who were bullied, and was a generally well behaved, gentle, and incredibly kind child.  Although he was a bit reckless, and often didn't think about the consequences of his actions, which is what lead him to Moon Gate.
At first it was just a little whim, a little bit of curiosity mixed in with a hell lot of impulsivity equals a really bad idea.  As a much older boy than he was previously, few things have shifted in his personality.  The gentleness, for one, is mostly gone now.  If you've ever had rough older boys who liked to tease you but is actually rather protective, well, that's what Kaede is.  He's still the adventure loving, monster fighting, kind older brother he once was was, just.. now he tends to show his affection by hitting you, and often playfully yells at you too, and scares you a lot, but really, what big brother doesn't?
【Backstory】
I touched on a portion of his backstory in the personality, but now we get to hear the full story.  Kaede comes from a not-so well off family, they're not exactly poor, but they aren't rich either.  They're just simple.  Kaede's grandfather, the previous owner of Kaede's signature weapon, served and lived through many wars and yet somehow managed to outlive his wife and most of his children.  Kaede was especially close to him, and loved hearing stories of the olden days when everything seemed so perfect.  When he died, Kaede was the most devastated, everyone else was already prepared, he had one foot in the grave already, but Kaede was somehow convinced he was invincible, well, with his stories! And all of his near death experiences! No one could blame Kaede for believing.  Kaede wanted to be exactly like his grandpa, his strong, heroic, amazing grandpa.
【How he got into Moongate】
He's a very reckless, adventurous child, one day around the anniversary of his grandfathers death, he went off in the night to go to his grandfathers grave, of course, he got super lost, and stumbled across the light that brought him to moon gate.
【Strengths】
As a shifter, Kaede has acquired many fox like characteristics.
Shapeshifting; when in tight spaces, Kaede could simply transform into his fox form and scurry away.
Enhanced endurance and speed; in all three forms, Kaede has shown enhanced endurance and speed, compared to that of foxes, at the least, so he can't outrun or outlast a cheetah, but he's pretty swift and light on his feet.
Keen sense of smell and hearing; foxes have very sensitive noses and ears, red foxes being the most impressive, however Kaede only has slightly enhanced smell and hearing.
Fox physiology; pretty much anything a fox can do, Kaede can do as well.
【Weaknesses】
Dogs; Kitsunes are known to be terribly afraid or despise dogs, and Kaede is no exception to this, this causes him to clam up around werewolves in their wolf form.
Dependency; as the eldest son and the 'leader of the pack', Kaede grew up without relying on anyone, except maybe his grandpa, somewhat, and since his grandpa died, the only person he was comfortable of relying and depending on is now in the afterlife.
Pessimism; Kitsunes are quick to succumb to negativity and darkness, which appears in Kaede as the form of extreme, almost destructive pessimism, Kaede is quick to become sad, and it takes a while for him to recover from it.
Weak Bones; even as a child, Kaede has had weak bones, it's easy for him to break or fracture bones.
【Fears】
Isolation; In an incredibly ironic way, as foxes are loner species and tend not to interact with their own species' as a pack, Kaede's biggest fear is being alone, not having anyone around, he hates being left to his thoughts, and if he's alone he would go absolutely crazy.
