Chapter 23
We sat in the waiting room. Sky sat beside me as she clutched my hand, her words trying to reassure me. Adelaide and Sebastian sat on the other side of the room. Her cries had ceased. She now slept on Sebastian's shoulders, tired.
Nicholas has to be okay.
He will be okay.
I kept chanting in my hand. My hands tugged between my thighs as I laid my head on Nicole's shoulder while she stroked my hair. The wait was killing me, we had received no news about Nicholas. Ten hours had already passed since the doctor had dropped the bomb on us.
What if he does not wake up?
No. No. I can't think that way.
Negative thoughts making their way in my mind when the doctor walked in. I jumped to my feet and made my way towards him and so did Sebastian and Adelaide.
"How is he?" I said breathlessly.
"Mr. Lorde is awake." The doctor informed us. "He is out of danger, he just needs to recuperate." He turned towards Sebastian. "Please come with me, you need to complete some paperwork."
The relief that I felt then was something that I had never felt before. It was like god had answered my prayers. "Nicholas is fine," I breathed out, whispering to myself. "Sky! Nicholas is fine. Did you hear that?" I looked at Sky, my lips curved into a smile as I engulfed her in a tight hug.
Smiling back, "I told you, didn't I?" She said patting my back.
"Can we meet him?" Sebastian asked as he held a smiling Adelaide but that smile didn't seem to reach her eyes.
Shaking that thought away, I looked at the doctor, waiting for his reply.
"No. We need to monitor him for a few more hours and then will the visitors be allowed to see him. He is under heavy medication so it's best to wait for another two-three hours."
Leaving us to our happiness, both the doctor and Sebastian walked out. His words not dampening my mood for the slightest. Nicholas was alive and well, that was what mattered.
A full blown smile making its way to my face, lightening my mood after twelve hours of agony. I slumped down on the couch with relief, eyes closed as I sent a silent prayer to the almighty.
------------
"You are hurt, let's get you to a doctor," Sky said bringing me out of my daze, her eyes staring at my hands. I nodded my head absentmindedly. Nicole supporting me as we make it to the doctor's cabin.
Adelaide was right. Justice needed to be served, I had protected my father for as long as I could.
The day when I came back home from the hospital.
"When the detectives question you, don't tell them that we were at Xander's house. We were at our home. You tripped down the staircase and were injured. I had to take you to the hospital. Understood? Remember that or I will make you regret not listening to me," My father bit out menacingly as he grabbed my shoulders tightly, my eyes closing shut from the pain. I however did not dare make a single sound from the fear of what he might do next. He shook my shoulder violently, his eyes narrowed to slits. He walked out of my room after threatening me, his own ten year old daughter. Not caring that I was his only family as he was mine. Not caring that I had lost my mother too, leaving me to myself in the darkness of the night, shivering out of fear.
I had nodded frantically.
Nothing had happened for a few days, no one asked for me. I remember sitting in my room playing with Snow, my puppy that momma had saved a few days ago. Mrs. Martha, my housekeeper and Mr Mathews, our chef would come by to play with me but they couldn't stay for long as they had to return to their work. Snow was my only companion, he kept me company when everyone had left me alone. It was then when the door to my room was pushed open.
"May I come in?" a sweet feminine voice called.
A nice looking lady stood there. She had her blonde hair in a bun, a wide smile on her face. She wore a shirt with a blazer on top and matching pants.
I nodded my head, following her steps as she walked in.
She sat beside me. "Your puppy is beautiful, does it have a name?" She asked me as she stroked Snow. Snow purred loving us stroking his head and fur.
"Snow," I whispered softly.
"Lovely name," she smiled.
She was the detective assigned on the Lorde Murder case. When she had asked me about what daddy was doing and where he was 3 days ago, my father's words came crashing through my mind. No matter how many times she asked me, no matter how many times she tried to reassure me asking me to not fear him, I kept repeating what my father had told me to.
I had lied for my father. It was one of the reasons, the murder couldn't be pinned on him, saving him from prison. Did Nicholas know this? If he didn't I wondered how he would react when he found out.
I didn't feel anything as the doctor removed the pieces of glass from my hand, not even when he applied the antiseptic and bandaged it. My mind plagued from the thoughts of the past.
I needed to right the wrong done in the past. My father needed to be brought to justice before he hurts anyone else in his greed for power and money.
"What are you thinking?" Sky asked me as we came out, taking note of my prolonged silence.
"I.." I was about to tell her when a voice interrupted me, again.
"Miss. I am Detective Jones, I would like to ask you a few questions," A tall, bulky man asked me as he showed me his badge.
I nodded and looked towards Nichole, my fingers twitching nervously. She gave me an encouraging smile.
"What is your relationship with Mr. Lorde?" He asked me, his one hand held a notepad while other held a pen as he waited for my answer.
"I am his girlfriend," I told him.
He nodded writing it down in his notepad. "You were with him when this incident happened?" He asked me.
I nodded my head in response.
"Do you know if he had problems with anyone recently?" He asked me. "Someone who has a incentive to hurt him?" When I did not answer him, he looked up. "Miss. we need to know if there is anyone out there who is trying to harm Mr. Lorde? I trust that you don't want him harmed either," He told me as he took in my swollen eyes, red nose and flushed cheeks.
"I think it's my father," I finally breathe out.
Sebastian Smith made his way towards us. Nicole clasped her hands with mine, giving me the support that I needed to let everything out. I tell the detective everything, about my father murdering Nicholas' and everything after that.
"We'll bring him in but we cant hold him without proof, Do you have anything that may help us?," The detective asked after taking everything down on his notepad.
I shook my head in a no, "But I know who might."
