Chapter One- David
One of the darkest nights, a storm billowed over the ocean, and it's horizon. Dark grey clouds of hostile fluff raged overhead. As the captain of a cargo ship; the Sleeping Beauty, called out to his men. He called out, as thunderous booming echoed overhead, and the God of Lightning began his reign of terror. The God directed his shots of silvery blue bolts all around the boat, striking against the waves. The Captain called out to his men, "hoist the sails, man the haul!"
"Sir, we've gotten ourselves a problem!" One of the crew members called back, he pulled up his hood, and it did it's best to block out the rough droplets of rain as it drained among the vessel and it's occupants.
"Tell me!" The Captain replied, "We've found a Spy!" The crewman answered simply. The captain huddled beneath his hood as well, and gave the crewman an odd look. The crewman looked away, and went off to help tend to the vessel. As it continued to storm, the captain scowled, of course there would be a spy among the ship. His ship, he wasn't carrying anything illegal across the sea. At least... he didn't think to check before he went to ship things across the great blue. He didn't ask, all he knew was, he was being payed a lot of Gold to export and import these miscellaneous materials. So... of course he shouldn't have had to asked what they were. As long as he and his crew delivers them across the sea, he'd be fine, and was promised that no harm would come to him once he finished the deal.
That was nearly a month ago. That coin, must better be worth it for the travel, and now; throughout that month, there has been a Spy among them. The Captain did not like it, not one bit. He sighed, as he descended down the deck, and down another set of stairs that was greeted by a hallway. The boat rocked, as the Captain ambled through the hall, his wet boots screeched as he walked. He whistled a haunting tune, as it was a sailors tune, and stopped as he felt a small rumble and it somewhat shook the hall. He hoped his Sleeping Beauty hadn't been hit, but he trained his men well, and he knew that his men were insightful enough to know what to do, if a part of the deck gets ruined, or even if they lose a sail. There were doors that stretched as far as the hallway went, and the hallway pretty much had stretched itself across the length of the vessel.
He took a left, and was greeted by a cell room. There was one other man that had occupied this room besides the Captain. The other man looked up, he appeared to be shaking, perhaps he was in shock? It didn't really matter to the Captain... he didn't really want to know what this man's intentions were, he didn't care either. He would rather throw this man offshore instead. Or perhaps, if he was an important man, he could turn him in... maybe earn some more coin in the process. That's what everyone is after for anyways, the coin. It's a fight for survival, and taking one of the most riskiest positions in this world, it was worth the price for being a sailor.
"Aye, so watcha' doin' on my vessel, you scum?" The Captain asked, he slammed one boot on top of a crate beside him, and rested his arm across his knee and studied the man. He looked young, no older than his late twenties. He had a baby-like face, his chin was clean shaven, he had black greasy hair, it wasn't as curly as the captain's own hair, but it did curl when it ever gets wet.
"I-I please.... I'm no Spy... like they say I am." The man replied in a hysterical tone, he looked up at the Captain, and he was worried. "I just wanted to go back home, to Everdale... I can pay ... or deal you any kind of service?"
"No, no, I don't give a damn about any of that." The Captain responded in a rash, and waved his hand to dismiss deals with this stranger. Though, the Captain had to have seen him 'round before? Hadn't he? Perhaps, the Captain should take more time to knowing his men, instead of bedding with the women that are on the main land.
"What do you need?" The darker haired man asked, his brow cocked in dismay, he could be hoping to not be thrown off overboard, as the monsters in the sea are quite hungry this time of the year, and they would basically eat anything that falls into the water.
"Once we land in a couple days- I need you to make sure, leave my cargo alone. If you truly are a Spy, for Everdale I assume, I don't need this conflict between the Main Land, and Stone Island." The Captain replied in a admonishing attitude, he lowered his leg back down; as he felt rested enough, he didn't bother to open the cage door for the man.
"Thank you, thank you for not killing me..." the man responded pitifully, the Captain acknowledged it with a nod, he was about to leave... when the younger man told him something more, "my name- It's David Copperfield." The Captain sighed, he didn't want small talk, but now... the man gave him his name. What in the hell, was he supposed to do now? Respond.... well that was one thing to do, should he respond, he really didn't know?
"Call me, Captain Shram." The Captain replied without remorse, and he seemed mostly content. The waves best against the craft and Captain Shram balanced himself with ease. The other man, he slid across the bench as the boat rocked; he looked up at the Captain.
"The names David," the hooded figure replied, he steadied himself as he sat on the bench still. The Captain arched a brow, he hadn't met any David before, it felt like a fake name. Although, the Mainland is a different place than Stone Island.
"Alright... David." The Captain spoke in a skeptical manner. "As I said earlier, I don't want your grubby paws stealing anything. If you do, I'll take you to the guards. Then, the court can deal with you." The Captain threatened. Although, getting a court session from the Judge of Everdale wouldn't be too bad; most of the locals who knew the Judge had gotten by with just a small means of services since one can't really do too much in Everdale.
Pretty much... almost everyone knows each other, either through work or outside clubs that the community participate in. They're distant from Riverbank. So, travel won't make it easy if others wish to leave Everdale. If one was leaving Everdale, one had reason to leave the city, and it would have to a very... very... good reason to live the city. Unless... your traveling with a caravan of course. There are trades that occur throughout the year.
Without any afterthought- Caption Shram snorted and stomped outside of the Jail Room, and back into the hallway. David sat on the bench helpless. Well... he wasn't entirely helpless. He could wait the extra few days of travel in here, and since the captain seemed so adement about the cargo. His brethren would be glad to find out what the military of Everdale would be purchasing from Stone Island. One can get a lot from that island. Though, there is a ton of Black Market material that is hard to find especially gunpowder.
Guns were banned years ago, and most of them were burned to ash, those who knew the value of guns journeyed to Stone Island and made a fortune for their weapons. There has been companies who constructed the gunpowder, it was a secret, and David was sent to exploit them. If anyone had a gun, they would be killed on sight and the rifle will be burned.
So if it is truly gunpowder that's being imported to Everdale, well the Captain and his crew has another thing coming their way.
David slipped a lockpick from his shoe, the crewmen were ignorant enough to check the rest of his pockets, they only took his sword, which he really wanted back by the way.
"I'll be getting out of here, if it's the last thing I do." Even though, he wasn't in much harm, he didn't like tight spaces, that's why he had preferred the meetings of the
The Allegiance to be held in open-like structures. (Yes I'm sorry for the random mash up of guild confusing names. I just couldn't go on with the Council. Sounded to bland, and there is also a court system in Everdale).
David stood up, and then inched closer to the door. He had shaky hands, but he knew what he was doing, at least he really thought he had. The lockpick snapped almost instantly as he pressed the small instrument into the lock.
"What the fuck?" The man cursed under his breath. He quickly bent down to pick up the remains and put them back into his pocket. There was a window, but David wasn't foolish enough to jump into the sea that contained monsters seen underneath the blue. The only option remained: he had to wait out the ride....
