Chapter Nine: Worry

Ivan hadn't been knocked out after the crash right away, he was able to hear and see things. His vision was blurry and everything sounded like it was underwater, but he managed to survey everything. The red pickup truck that had hit them was also badly damaged and the driver was knocked out at the wheel. Alfred's door was bent in weird angles, barely missing Alfred's body. There was glass everywhere and Alfred was slumped forward in his seatbelt, his temple bleeding.

He heard echoes around him as he began to reach for Alfred. The sounds were easy to pinpoint for someone like him: they were emergency vehicle sirens blasting in the distance and a crowd beginning to gather, some people were screaming and Ivan even picked up the crying of a baby. Ivan moved his arm slowly, holding Alfred's hand gently.

One of the photos of their baby boys was on the carpeted floor, specks of blood falling onto it from Alfred's wound. Ivan used his other hand to get it and put it to his heart as he looked to Alfred. The broken window made the light reflect weirdly, illuminating Alfred like a saint.

"F-Fredka," Ivan whispered before he finally succumbed to darkness.

Matthew had been hanging at Alfred's house with Gilbert and playing with his little nephews and nieces when the two nations heard a loud knock on the door. Seeing that Matthew was busy, Gilbert got off the large couch and made his way to the front door. Alicia was already at the window, curiously looking as she opened the door. A tall cop was standing there, his hat already off.

"Hey there, little miss. My name is Officer Price. Are there any adults home?" he asked softly. The cop was young, most likely a rookie that was fresh out of the academy. Alicia nodded and turned to the albino nation, confusion in her eyes.

"Uncle Gil, there's a policeman at the door," she pointed to the man, who curtly nodded to the personification. Gilbert felt his stomach drop at the sight of the officer holding his hat, but swallowed his nerves and nodded. He knelt down to Alicia with a soft smile, trying his best not to show his worry.

"Ja, I see that. Alicia, vhy don't jou take jour siblings to the craft room. It's time for the adults to talk," Alicia nodded and went off. Gilbert stood up straight and gestured for the officer to enter, "please, come in officer," the officer came in with a polite nod as Gilbert shut the door, "can ve get jou anything? Vater, coffee, a snack perhaps?"

"That is ok, I'm afraid this won't take very long," Price said as they arrived at the living area. Gilbert led him to the couch where Matthew was worriedly sitting, he clearly knew something was wrong.

"Gil, who is this?"

"My name is Officer Patrick Price," he shook Matthew's hand.

"Matthew and this is my partner, Gilbert. What is this all aboot?"

"I came to inquire about information,"

"About vhat?"

"There was an accident this afternoon. Three males were sent to the hospital, one of them in critical condition," Price informed.

"Ok, what does that have to do with us, eh?" Matthew felt a lump in his throat. He didn't want to hear what he knew he was going to hear.

"According to the licenses of two of the victims, they live at this address, Ivan Braginsky, and Alfred Jones. Alfred is the victim that is in critical condition," both the nations felt their entire world plummet.

"Vhat happened?!" Gilbert asked with a sudden rush of panic.

"The third man, Richard Hog, was speeding through the intersection. Alfred and Ivan had the green light when Richard t-boned their vehicle. It was estimated that Richard was going over 90 miles per hour when he made the impact. Currently, all of them are at Hope Hospital getting treated," Price then pulled something from his pocket.

"Vhat is that?" Gilbert whispered.

"Mr. Braginsky was clutching it close to his chest. It seems to be a sonogram," he handed the picture to the two nations, both of them feeling their guts twist even more. There in that picture were twins, two babies, two nieces or nephews, "I advise you folks visit them, Alfred was very hurt at the scene of the accident," Canada shot up and went to the closet, yanking out a backpack.

"KIDS!!! WE NEED TO GO OUT!!! GET SHOES ON PLEASE!!!" Gilbert had never heard his lover scream that loud. It was louder than when he and Alfred buried his entire supply of maple syrup. The young territories ran downstairs, Alicia carrying Quincy and holding little Liam's hand. Fredrick and Mali were also holding hands, making a territory chain that would follow Matthew like ducklings.

"Jou vere certainly prepared, birdie," Gilbert looked to the cop, "vill jou give us un escort?"

"It would be my pleasure, sir," the cop walked out, the line of personifications following. The drive there was making Matthew anxious, he didn't like what was happening. Alicia picked up on his worriedness, hugging him as to comfort him. When they finally pulled into the hospital parking lot, they got out just in time to see Richard being handcuffed.

As soon as Matthew saw the man who hurt his brother, something snapped. He stormed up to the cop that was about to put him in the car, gently tapping his shoulder. When the female cop turned around, she saw the hurt in Matthew's eyes.

"My pregnant sister was critically hurt because of this bastard, may I punch him just once please?"

"Sister, it was three men?" she asked.

"Alfred is pregnant but he identifies as male," Matthew clarified. The female cop nodded and held Richard still.

"Take a swing for your sis then, dude," she commanded calmly. Matthew reeled his fist back and socked the man in the jaw hard enough to knock him out. Matthew then smiled at the cop and nodded.

"Thanks, eh," Matthew calmly walked back to Gilbert and the children, most people watching in shock. Gilbert knew Matthew was strong and could knock the wind out of anyone he wanted, but the children had never seen their Uncle Mattie be violent outside of a hockey game.

Matthew wanted nothing more to rip his skull straight from his neck. But, the cop definitely wouldn't have allowed him to do anything close to that. With a tiny bit of closure, Matthew was somewhat calmer as they entered the hospital. The nations sat down in the waiting room, feeling mentally exhausted at that point. The territories played with the small office toys, along with the coloring books and a deck of cards that were in the emergency backpack.

"Birdie, I'm going to call the others," Gilbert kissed Matthew's cheek and walked off. Matthew watched the kids as his nerves made him vibrate in fear. Once Gilbert was away from the busy noise of the waiting room, he pulled out his phone. He dialed the first people he thought deserved to know, the Alfred Protection Squad. He began to video call them, hoping they all answered. One by one, all of their heads popped up.

Germany, France, England, China, Spain, the Italies, Japan, Hungary, the Baltics, the Nordics, Belarus, and Ukraine.

"Hello, Gilbert. To what do we owe the pleasure?" Arthur asked as he shuffled some papers out of frame.

"It is rearry rate here, Girbert. You woke me up," Japan was rubbing his eyes, he clearly just got up. China and Belarus looked much the same, all three of the nations looking like they had just awoken from a coma. Germany, France, Arthur, Hungary, Spain, the Baltics, the Italies, Ukraine, and the Nordics seemed to be in their normal everyday clothes.

"Listen here bastard, I was in the middle of making my lunch. What the hell did you want?" Romano asked with an irritated tone. As soon as Lovino spoke, Gilbert began to cry. It shocked the nations, as Gilbert was always too proud to cry, "Woah, I'm sorry Gilbert! Don't cry! I didn't mean to sound that harsh!"

"Gilbert, amigo? Is everything ok?" Spain asked immediately. Gilbert shook his head and held his mouth. His back slid down the wall as tears streamed down his cheeks.

"Bruder! Vhat has happened?!"

"Girbert, take a deep breath," Kiku instructed now fully alert. Katyusha nodded in agreement and began to take deep breaths.

"Copy Kat, broha," Mathias whispered. Gilbert began to take deep breaths, finally finding his bearings.

"Now, mon ami, tell us what 'appened," Francis instructed quietly.

"There vas un accident," Gilbert took another deep breath, "some douchebag vas going over 144 kilometers per hour und ran a stoplight. He hit their car und Alfred's un critical condition. Birdie und I don't know vat to do, ve're both freaking the hell out,"

"I'm booking the next available flight!" Toris yelled as he went off-screen to find his phone. The other Baltics nodded and stood up, running to their laptops to book a flight for themselves.

"I found a flight leaving from Helsinki Airport in two hours! The last five seats are economy, but I don't care. All Nordics, pack a carryon and meet me in front of the airport in 30!" Finland signed off, as did the rest of the Nordics.

"I found a flight leaving un three hours, I vill pick Feliciano, Lovino, und Eliza up," Germany signed off, followed by the Italies and Hungary.

"Big sister, I have booked us a flight that leaves in an hour. Meet me at our usual spot," Natalia and Katyusha signed off.

"China-san, I have my personar jet. Come over and we can fry together," Japan and China logged off.

"I 'ave booked a flight that leaves in a little over two 'ours. Angleterre and Espagne, I will text you ze details!" France and Spain logged off. Arthur stayed on.

"Everything will be fine, Gilbert. Everyone is on their way, we will all be there soon," Arthur hung up, leaving Gilbert to cry against his knees.

Six hours passed and all the nations had been sitting in the waiting room. There had been no information given about either of their fellow nations. But the tension was so thick that the nations felt like suffocating. When a doctor came into the waiting room, he was shocked to see the many personifications. But he adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat.

"Is anyone here for Ivan Braginsky?" all of them stood up, making the elderly doctor jump, "follow me," the nations were quick to follow the doctor as he led them down a long corridor, "I am Dr. Herbert Razway, I am in charge of Ivan and Alfred's treatments. Ivan only seems to have minor damage to his ribs and a slight concussion. Alfred, I'm afraid, is far more severe. Many lacerations were inflicted on his head and chest as well as his inner thighs. He broke four ribs and also needed stitches across his collarbone,"

"JESUS MURPHY TELL ME ABOUT THE BABIES ALREADY!!!" Matthew snapped, "I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF THE BABIES ARE OK, EH!!!" everyone froze, including Herbert. But the elderly man steadied his composure and nodded.

"Alfred's babies are fine, nothing to worry about. We put him in a medically induced coma to guarantee a steady recovery. While Alfred is resting, would you folks like to see Ivan?"

"Where is my big brother?" Natalia quickly asked. Katyusha had to hold her back to prevent her from pouncing. Herbert gestured to a door to his left.

"Ivan is in this one, Alfred is right across the way in this room," he pointed to his right. The nations all nodded and split up. Matthew, Arthur, Francis, Antonio, Tino, Berwald, Gilbert, Kiku, Feliciano, and Ludwig ran into Alfred's room while Natalia, Katyusha, Toris, Eduard, Raivis, Lovino, Eliza, Yao, Mathias, Lukas, Emil, and the states ran into Ivan's room. Ivan was staring at the sonogram as tears trickled down his cheeks.

"Ivan," Katyusha walked up and gently cupped his head, letting him sob into her chest.

"It's all my fault if I waited a few more seconds we would be home right now cuddling in front of the fireplace. But I jumped the light too fast, I didn't see him coming," Ivan clutched Kat's hand as he continued to sob.

"Papa, it's not your fault. Mama wouldn't want you to say that!" Alicia hopped onto his bed and hugged him. Frederick, Liam, and Mali did the same, cuddling their dad.

"Ivan," Toris spoke softly as Ivan continued to cry.

"They won't even tell me anything! I don't know what's happening to him!" Ivan cried. Yao rubbed his leg softly as he sat at the foot of the bed.

"They put him in a medically induced coma, aru. He was hurt badly, but the babies are ok," Yao smiled softly seeing Ivan stop crying. He sniffed and rubbed his cheeks, Emil handing him a handkerchief. The group was there for only ten minutes when Feliciano could be heard across the hall.

"VE~ SOMEBODY COME QUICK!!! HE'S WAKING UP!!!" the group stared at the doorway as Herbert and three nurses ran into the room. Ivan groaned and tried to sit up, but was gently held down by Mathias and Lovino.

"You crazy bastard, stay down,"

"You aren't healed completely, Ivan. You need to rest your wounds," Mathias tried to keep him down, but Ivan shoved him off. He clasped the railing of the hospital bed and growled at the strain he put on his wound. Lukas chanted something quickly, a wheelchair appearing in front of them. Eliza pushed it to the bed and gestured for Ivan to get in. Ivan basically jumped into the chair and Eliza wheeled him out. When the group entered Alfred's room, they saw it.

Alfred's beautiful blue eyes fluttered open as his face contorted in minor discomfort. Britain quickly shut the curtains, stopping the unwanted light from coming in. His face relaxed and his eyes opened again, this time a smile painted across his face.

"Mornin'" he whispered quietly. Relief washed over everyone as Alfred stretched. He looked around and saw everyone around him, confusion contorting his face, "what's up? I miss something?" he tilted his head.

Everybody laughed at his confusion, making Alfred giggle along with them. Putting a hand on his belly, his smile radiated like the sun.

"Fredka?" Ivan rolled over and put his hand over the younger's. Ivan jolted a bit as he felt a harsh push.

His babies were kicking.
